Byrne-ing desires

2:56pm Friday 31st October 2008

If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be? “Somebody I could talk about films with. Steven Spielberg seems to know a thing or two.”

What is your biggest fear? “Being trapped upside down underground. There’s not much chance of that, I know.

I don’t know why upside down is so much scarier but it is.”

Do you have any superstitions? “No I don’t. I used to have one about taping myself because the first gig where I ever taped myself I died but I’ve grown out of that.”

If you could only have one song on your iPod, what would it be? “Probably Paradise by The Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf because that’s like three songs in one.”

What’s the most expensive item you've ever bought, not including property or cars? “I once spent £16,000 on a 63-inch plasma screen only to sell it three years later for £500.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? “Cut the blue wire. A lot of people owe their lives to me following that advice.”

When was the last time you cried and why? “Three days ago and I’m afraid it’s private.”

What’s your indulgence? “TV and movies. Not just to spend money on but also the time I spend watching them is very indulgent.”

How environmentally friendly are you? “About average. I recycle stuff. I have a compost bin. I don’t drive a big car. I’m quite a long chalk from being self-sufficient though.”

Who is the most famous person whose number you have in your mobile? “Davina McCall. That’s only because I dropped my phone down the toilet not long after exchanging numbers with Vince Vaughn.”

How many texts do you send in a day? “I guess about five to ten.”

What item could you not live without? “It’s amazing how indispensable the mobile phone has become.”

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? “I’d be more disciplined and motivated. Or is that two things?”

Where are you going on holiday? “The next bit of time off I get will be in December after my tour.

I’ll try to get to the Scottish Highlands for a few days. It’ll be cold but if it’s not too cloudy it’ll be beautiful.”

What were you doing this time yesterday? “I was on my way to the Riverside in Hammersmith for my show.”

Ed Byrne appears at the Nuffield on Sunday November 9. Tickets: 023 8067 1771 or nuffieldtheatre.co.uk
