YOU’VE JUST COME BACK FROM TOURING AUSTRALIA. HOW WAS IT?

Rebecca: “We’ve been there before and always had a great reception. We get played on the radio there a fair bit too, so it feels like we’re a bigger deal out there than we are anywhere else.”

Charles: “We played a few gigs out there and a festival, which was in the grounds of a prison. It was interesting because we’d not done an Australian festival before. Everywhere’s different, just subtle things. I got sunburn as well.”

BADLY?

Charles: “We were on the beach and all my legs caught it. I didn’t really notice until we were on stage and I thought I was stood next to a radiator, but it was in fact my legs.”

WHAT’S THE LONGEST YOU’VE BEEN ON TOUR FOR?

Rebecca: “This was it, we were away for five weeks all in all. We did the east coast of America, Australia then west coast of America then to Texas for South By Southwest festival.

“We had a great time this time around. Every time we’ve been before I’ve been dead set on having a good time, but it stressed me out and it ended up being a disappointment. This time, we had so many gigs, I just relaxed and took it easy and ended up having the best time ever.”

YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF UK SHOWS PLANNED, LEADING INTO FESTIVALS.

WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING SO MUCH MAPPED OUT?

Charles: “It’s great from a financial point of view because if we’re not playing, we’re not really earning any money.

It’s the same as anything, if you’re not working, it can get a bit depressing. It’s great to get home after a tour and sort out your life, then get back to performing.

I’ve really enjoyed touring this year, it’s been a different experience completely.”

THE SECOND ALBUM, PARADISE, IS A LOT MORE UPBEAT THAN YOUR DEBUT YEAH SO. THOSE SONGS MUST BE FUN TO PLAY LIVE?

Rebecca: “We played with so many who can get crowds moving, I think that was a big criteria for the second album; to write songs people can dance to. We wanted to move on stage too. We’re probably better at the slowies, but we really enjoy the fasties.”

HARMONIES ARE REALLY IMPORTANT IN YOUR MUSIC. DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE SPECIAL CARE OF YOUR VOICES?

Rebecca: “I went through a stage of getting tonsillitis, and it terrifies me that it’ll happen again.

Adele’s voice problems really freaked me out, thinking it might happen to me. I used to be supertrained, doing singing competitions and all that when I was a teenager, but I’ve lost all that. I’d like to get back to that, have some lessons again maybe.”

n Slow Club are at The Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea on Sunday, The Joiners in Southampton on Monday and The Railway in Winchester on Sunday May 6. They also play the Golden Down Festival at Matterley Bowl in June.
