FIVE new plays by up and coming writers will premiere at The Berry Theatre later this month.

The work, penned by members of one of the Hedge End theatre’s writing groups The Writers’ Room, will be produced in one day by a team of professional directors and actors.

The plays include Stone by Matt Beames, which is set in a world not so different from this one, where something strange and frightening is happening to humankind. Sol and Luz are alone, trying to make sense of a changing world where reliance on technology is becoming a danger in itself.

Stone will be directed by Mary Swan, artistic director of Proteus Theatre Company, based in Basingstoke.

For the next play, everything was going as planned on Michael’s wedding day, until an uninvited guest decided to show up. Forceful and emotional, it’s A Love’s Rant by Ruben Sanchez–Garcia. This is Ruben’s first play and will be directed by Daniel Hill, drama development manager at The Point.

Because We’re Here by Deborah Gearing is a new play featuring a nurse and a young soldier, set in the First World War. This moment could be their last.

Deborah is co-tutor of The Writers’ Room and Live Wires at The Berry and is part of The Fuse writers. Kirstie Davis, artistic director of Forest Forge Theatre Company directs.

The fourth play on the evening is Armchair Revolution by Nathan Stafford King and explores issues with our political system. This will be directed by Owen Calvert Lyons, artistic director of The Point and The Berry Theatres.

The final offering on the day is You Never Know Who’s Watching You, a tense thriller by Gavin Egan, directed by Nicky Bellenger, storyteller and director for The Berry Theatre.
