STUDENTS at a Hampshire college wowed crowds when they performed the curtain raiser for an adaption of the classic drama the Red Shoes.

Richard Taunton Sixth Form College student’s curtain-raising performance at the Mayflower Theatre was met with huge applause.

Their curtain-raiser performance, which featured their own interpretation of a number of themes from the show, was met with praise and audience appreciation from the 2,000 strong crowd.

The 14 lucky students enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with professional dancers from Matthew Bourne’s Dance Company, Re:Bourne.

This charitable arm of New Adventures invests in the future of dance, and is a crucial mechanism for finding and nurturing the next generation of dancers, choreographers and audiences.

The group worked in collaboration with Emily Piercy and Ross Carpenter to create original choreography over a four day intensive rehearsal period. Their piece, entitled Overtures, explored concepts such as travelling, conducting, audience reactions and an orchestra.

Lizzy Phillips, a student from Richard Taunton Sixth Form College and curtain raiser performer described the experience as unforgettable.

She said: “Performing on the Mayflower Theatre stage and having the opportunity to work with the Re:Bourne Company was amazing and something that I will never forget”

Head of performing arts at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College Lisa Fernandez-Adams, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Mayflower Engage and to be given the unique opportunity to allow our dance and performing arts students to work with one of the UK’s leading dance companies, Adventures in Motion Pictures and Re:Bourne.

“The insight and creative process, as well as the outstanding performance opportunity, will enhance our students’ understanding of the performing arts world, and will forever be a memory.”
