Following her hugely successful all-male productions of HMS Pinafore and The Pirates Of Penzance, Sasha Regan is back at Theatre Royal Winchester next week with The Mikado.

Arguably Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular opera, The Mikado takes its audience to the far away land of Titipu where flirting is banned on pain of death. The location may be distant but it provides many opportunities to poke fun at British institutions and behaviour.

Songs include A Wand’ring Minstrel I, Three Little Maids, Willow Tit Willow and Some Day It Might Happen, better known as I’ve Got A Little List.

Sasha Regan’s production moves the setting to 1950s England and a school camping trip. Regan, who is Artistic Director of Union Theatre in London, has said that her desire to have an all-male cast stemmed from her experiences performing Gilbert and Sullivan at a single-sex school.

She added: "The Mikado is a very funny piece and I would never wish to mess with that. The company will play the characters with truth and a sprinkling of good comic timing to just enhance it. We spend a lot of time in rehearsals keeping the comedy under control, the mere fact that we have boys dressed as girls is silly enough. The combination of a good script and the all-male concept seems to be working well. Fingers crossed that after Iolanthe, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience and H.M.S. Pinafore, it isn't The Mikado that trips us up - in a topsy turvy way of course!

Sasha was recently awarded the Special Achievement Award at the Off West End Awards 2017 for her contribution to musical theatre.

Sasha Regan’s All Male The Mikado is at Theatre Royal Winchester from Monday to Saturday. Limited tickets are still available from theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or 01962 840 440.
