THERE'S a comedy about comedy at Theatre Royal Winchester next week.

Stand Up Stand Up is a new play by Jim Cartwright, author of the Olivier Award-winning Rise And Fall Of Little Voice, about a neurotic comedian on his uppers and a tough, charmless bailiff with showbiz aspirations.

Hilarity and heartbreak follow as the comic teaches the bailiff about making people laugh and the latter returns the favour by training the comedian in assertiveness. It’s an unexpectedly life changing adventure for both of them.

Stand up Stand Up pays homage to many comedy greats from Charlie Chaplin to Russell Brand to Morecambe and Wise. In one of many funny moments, a passage from Shakespeare is interpreted in the style of Benny Hill. In another, the two of them attempt a Laurel And Hardy song-and-dance number.

Jim Cartwright, who also wrote Road and Two, directs the production which stars Chris Hannon and Andrew Westfield.

Stand Up Stand Up by Jim Cartwright runs from Monday to Wednesday. Visit theateroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440 for tickets.
