SCAFFOLDER turned X-Factor singing sensation Terry Winstanley stars in musical Dreamboats and Petticoats, inspired by the hit rock ’n’ roll albums, when it hits Southampton next week.
It’s 1961 and emotions run high as young musicians Norman and Bobby compete to win a national songwriting competition – and, more importantly, the attention of the gorgeous Sue!
But when Bobby discovers that shy Laura is no slouch on the piano, love and rock ’n’ roll fame beckons...
Terry, who admits he thought theatre impresario Bill Kenwright was a firm of solicitors, told Lorelei Reddin: “Once I phoned back and found out he had a really big production company, I was so honoured to be asked. I couldn’t believe it really.
“It’s absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t be more pleased with the way it’s going.
“This is a real feel-good show, you come in miserable and you go home happy. The audiences on the tour so far have been phenomenal – I’ve never seen crowds quite like it in the theatre.
“It’s great to be performing again, but I leave the dancing to the experts. I move about a bit to one of the songs, but you are not going to see Terry Winstanley dancing!
“But I’ll never change, I’m still the same person. I just used to get up at five in the morning to go to the building site and now I walk past building sites and they want their picture taken with me.
I’ve become a bit of a builder’s hero!”
The father of four and grandfather of three was entered for the X-Factor by his three granddaughters who enjoy his singing.
n Dreamboats and Petticoats, which features music from Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury and Chuck Berry, runs from Monday to Saturday at The Mayflower.
