THE habits hit Hampshire next week.
Nuns go on the run in hit West End musical comedy Sister Act, which opens for a two week run at The Mayflower on Tuesday.
When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun she quickly finds fans among her fellow ‘sisters’ but makes the wrong impression on the convent’s strict Mother Superior.
When she turns her attention to the convent’s off-key choir, helping the nuns to find their true voices and breathing new life into the rundown neighbourhood, her cover could be blown for good. With the gang giving chase, is time running out for Deloris? Or have they underestimated the power of her new found Sisterhood?
Ex Brookside, The Royal and Coronation Street star Michael Starke stars as Monsignor O’Hara. He told Lorelei Reddin: “It’s a wonderful story of friendship, love, relationships and understanding of each other. Plus it’s got the most fabulous music.
“We’re bringing the Broadway version to Southampton, which is great for me as it gives me a bit more to do. There’s more time spent in the convent. It’s a very honest show and the brilliant songs and the great comedy are just punch, punch, punch, punch.
“I am getting quite used to frocks though after playing Edna in Hairspray!
At least as Monsignor (a senior member of the clergy in the Catholic Church), I don’t have to wear those ridiculous shoes! I’ve spoken to my wife and lots of other women and I don’t know how on earth you walk in heels!
“I warmed up for this role as an altar boy where I was always laughing. Anything would set me off. It was probably my first stage.”
Michael joins another ex- Corrie co-star Denise Black, who played siren hairdresser and mother of Ken Barlow’s child Denise Osbourne. She appears as Mother Superior, alongside Cynthia Erivo in the lead role.
Sister Act runs until Saturday March 3.
