ONE of the country’s leading practitioners of the classical Indian dance form Bharata Natyam, Shobana Jeyasingh will premiere her new work, Classic Cut, at The Point on Thursday.

The intriguing new show features two pieces, one revisiting the past, the other stepping into a bold new era.

The first piece sees Jeyasingh revisiting Configurations, a dance she created in 1988, at the start of her company’s career. Groundbreaking at the time for its use of music – Jeyasingh commissioned composer Michael Nyman to create a new score, String Quartet No. 2 – Configurations fuses traditional dance forms such as ballet and Bharata Natyam with contemporary movement to produce an intricate, fast-paced performance.

This reworked piece will see Jeyasingh’s dance company perform to a live version of Nyman’s score.
