Anyone familiar with comedian Sean Lock from panel shows such as Mock the Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats might be surprised by how physical his stand up comedy is.

The 50-year-old leapt, cantered and danced his way around the Mayflower Theatre stage during his two and a half hour show last night.

He used movement to great effect, such as a great routine comparing binge drinking to a moth hitting a lightbulb and acting out elements of his stories, from handling birds of prey to imagining what it would be like to be on Strictly Come Dancing, to great effect.

Although his show was doubtlessly carefully constructed, he gave the appealing impression of being slightly shambolic rather than slick, which helped the audience warm to him.

A few times, though, the comedy did lose its way a little, such as an overly-long routine about an imaginary foreign film which was a set up for a joke and was a rather flat end to the first half of the show.

Although not a classic ‘pick on the audience’ comedian, he did have some fun banter with the Southampton crowd, some of which raised some of the biggest laughs of the night and showed his talent for ad-libbing.

An unexpected element in the encore tied up earlier elements in the show and ended the evening on a hilarious, if rather surreal, high.
