THIS year’s family pantomime at the Theatre Royal brings spectacular special effects, including a forest of thorns, a flying evil fairy and an impressive firebreathing dragon.

Writer and director James Barry’s take on this classic is one to entertain all ages.

Keeping very much to the traditional story, the plot introduces a clever 100-year jump from Aurora’s (Catherine Hayworth) sleep to her hopeful awakening, bringing the audience straight into the 1920s, which adds to the lively atmosphere of the show, allowing for some wonderfully stylised choreography, costumes and great musical numbers.

The brilliant, high energy performance from the cast generates a great rapport with the audience.

With Joey the Jester using silly jokes to entertain the children, and the panto dame, Nurse Nelly, providing the adults with some comical jokes, everyone is cheering and laughing in their seats.

Kate Russell-Smith is excellent as the dreaded evil fairy Carabosse, provoking a series of boos and heckles upon every entrance and dastardly deed.

The production also includes exciting use of visual effects, which creates a sensational final showdown with the fire-breathing dragon.

The cast’s lively performance is complemented by the brilliant live music and songs written by Simon Slater, as well as upbeat choreography by Hannah Jackson, performed by a group of incredibly talented young dancers, who join the professional actors on stage.

Sleeping Beauty is playing at Theatre Royal Winchester until January 4.
