DEBUT Youth Theatre has offered an unseasonal slice of summer with its first production of Grease.
A school version adapted for a younger audience, it somewhat lacked the fluency of story and richness of character (especially Rizzo) of the original.
After a slightly nervous start, the musical took off and really flew by the end.
It was frothy and fun. The enthusiasm and enjoyment of the cast shone through, to be reciprocated by the audience.
There were good performances, in particular Toby McLellan (Kenickie) and Anna Robinson (Frenchy), whilst Conor Chambers (Danny) and Chloe Jarvis (Sandy) were well matched.
However, there were a couple of niggles with the staging: when the whole company was on stage they swamped the space, drawing attention away from rather than enhancing the main action, and the constant changing of scenery made each scene quite disjointed which did not help the flow of the story.
