MY first visit to Chameleons for several years and what a pleasure to see two of their brightest talents still treading the boards in the company’s fiftieth anniversary year.
I refer to David Wilkins and Marilyn Dunbar, perfectly-cast as Basil and Sybil Fawlty.
The verbal interplay between the two characters is central to the 12 BBC episodes that were a favourite 40 years ago.
Wilkins perfectly captured the mannerisms of the bumbling Torquay hotelier and Dunbar was uncannily like Sybil in every respect.
Three episodes were performed; A Touch of Class, The Hotel Inspector and Communication Problems, with Lisa Dunbar (Polly), Terry James (Manuel) and Mike Morris (Major) brilliantly completing the central characters.
Director Gillian Wilkins had a multi-tasking cast, too many to mention, who all did well, making good use of a particularly well-dressed set.
Serving real food and wine was a rare, fine, detail that enhanced the authenticity.
Hilarious!
