REVIEW: Noises Off, Nuffield Theatre,

THIS is a new production of one of the most celebrated farces of the 20th century, Noises Off written by Michael Frayn and co-produced by Nottingham Playhouse, Northern Stage and The Nuffield.

Directed and played with humour and assurance, this very amusing comedy – about a comedy Nothing On, being tortuously rehearsed and shambolically performed – creates laughter on many levels, from farce and slapstick to subtle innuendo and dramatic irony.

Nine accomplished actors, all obviously and infectiously relishing the mayhem, entertain consistently, as “the play” stumbles through its tetchy dress rehearsal, deteriorating hilariously in its manic matinee, and disintegrating gloriously in its final “performance”.

Orlando Wells (what a wonderful name for an actor playing an oleaginous director) excels as the increasingly desperate and demented Lloyd Dallas, while all the luvvies pout, bicker, rant, cry, and booze, but ultimately manage to perform in their own individual and entertaining ways.

Sharp timing and direction, comedic props (especially the telephone) and a variety of underwear combine to produce a sparkling show.

Successful for many years in the West End, on Broadway, and around the world, Noises Off has filled many theatres with much laughter...

...So does this 1982 theatrical gem still work in 2016? Perhaps it now feels a little dated, maybe over-reliant on the slapstick elements, but if you’ve never seen it before, treat yourself to a hilarious play.

This thoroughly enjoyable revival of a modern comedy classic runs until June 25.
