Million Dollar Quartet, Mayflower Theatre

IT is sixty years since four musicians at the start of what would become illustrious careers came together for an impromptu and pretty special jam session.

But those hits feel as fresh as if they were written yesterday rather than six decades ago when Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis were on the brink of superstardom.

Twenty or so of the greatest rock n roll songs you'll ever hear are performed on stage in this live stage show, recreating a one-off event in history.

With Jason Donovan in the only non-singing role as Sam Phillips, the man who gave each of them their big break, and a group of actor musicians as the stars, audiences are treated to quite brilliant renditions of tracks including Walk the Line, Great Balls of Fire, Hound Dog, Down By The Riverside, Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On and Blue Suede Shoes.

Martin Kaye is quite astonishing as the youthful Jerry Lee Lewis, grabbing all the best lines and giving a high-octane performance which sees him playing the piano with every part of his body, including his toes, as well as using it as a platform to leap into the air at any given moment.

Robbie Durham makes a pitch perfect Johnny Cash while Matthew Wycliffe and Ross William Wild are compelling as Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley respectively. Katie Ray, as Presley's girlfriend Dyanne, adds a stunning female vocal to the mix, particularly during the show-stopper Fever.

Jason Donovan makes a charming narrator, telling the story of Sam Phillips during interludes from the thrilling music.

The story hints at friction between Perkins and Presley over the ownership of Blue Suede Shoes and the wild future Jerry Lee Lewis could expect, but it's really all about that one incredible get-together.

The numbers are perfectly executed and played as if they are being created right at that very moment.

This is one crowd pleaser of a show, which had every single member of the audience on their feet for a spectacular finale.

A glorious look at a remarkable rock n roll night.
