REVIEW: ‘BEAUTY AND THE BEAST’

RAODS

Plaza Theatre, Romsey

SUBTITLED ‘a family pantomime that has something for everyone’, the company were as good as their word, with a cast that spanned all ages, mirroring those of the audience. There was comedy aplenty, generally led by the very funny Colin Russell, as Felix The French Poodle, supported by Alan Rimmer as Ma, as the traditional panto dame, alongside Jane Russell (Jacques) and Emma Portlock (Capucine). Becky Mills and Jo Short were well-cast and good value in their lead-roles as Beauty and Prince Christopher and Matthew Ellison was better than your average Beast. Danni Fletcher also impressed as the evil (but likeable) Malabelle, who drew her share of boos from the audience. Director Caroline Egg’s production benefited from Alex ‘Teddy’ Clements’ excellent trio in the orchestra pit, an attractive, well-lit set and colourful costumes. The lively first-night, although entertaining enough and well received, was unfortunately blighted by inconsistent sound during the solo numbers.
