AS far as good old fashioned pantos go, Ferneham Hall is staging a mighty fine offering again this year.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has everything you would expect from a festive show, a classic tale of good triumphing over evil, a healthy smattering of dodgy jokes, a wicked queen and plenty of opportunity for the audience to holler at the stage.
The cast delivered fine performances all round, yet there was no real stand out show-stopper for me this year.
The momentum was largely kept up with the comical antics of Herbie the vegetarian huntsman, played by Scott Cripps, and his mother Dame Dotty, played by Ian Marr.
The pair really were a treat and had a gag to suit all ages, particularly poor Ron – an unwitting audience member who had the misfortune to be seated in the front row and therefore the object of the well-dressed Dame’s affections.
However, there really wasn’t enough of their ridiculous japes in the first half of the show but by the second half the crowd seemed to have warmed up and there were plenty more laughs.
Sue Holderness played a very convincing Queen Narcissa although the audience had to wait for the cast to take their bows before any reference was made to her on-screen husband Boyce from her Only Fools and Horses days.
Laura Sicurello was note perfect in the role of sweet Snow White and I thoroughly enjoyed Edward Baker-Duly’s bumbling but charming portrayal of Prince Simon.
They made for a very cute couple as the story took us through their bid to find true love.
The dancers who also doubled up as the dwarfs should also be applauded for their performances.
All in all my younger guests and I left feeling suitably entertained and festive.
