Rock ‘n’ Roll heaven Dreamboats and Petticoats, The Mayflower NOSTALGIA is the new rock ‘n’ roll – and the swinging 60s are alive and well in Southampton this week.
Last week it was a throwback to the 90s, the first time Take That were famous with Never Forget, and from last night The Mayflower was swaying to the sounds of the rock ‘n’ roll era.
We join dreamer Bobby – a fantastic Josh Capper, who hit every single note of difficult Roy Orbison numbers perfectly – at the auditions for his youth club band where he’s hoping to pick up the girl of his dreams.
The course of teenage true love never does run smoothly and we’re taken on a musical journey with brilliant sets from the arcades of Southend to the local Wimpy, all to some classic hits from the likes of The Everly Brothers, Cliff Richard and Bill Haley and The Comets.
Of course, Bobby finally gets his girl – the lovely Laura, Daniella Bowen, who also deserves special mention for her impressive vocals.
The whole cast were a talented bunch though, singing, dancing and playing instruments with skill.
There were also plenty of laughs for an impressed audience, who enjoyed the jokes centred on what Britain would later become.
It all built to a brilliant feel-good finale. The words dancing in the aisles are used far too easily in musical reviews. But last night many of the audience were out of their seats and literally jiving in front of the stage to a brilliant and upbeat medley.
And in theatrical terms, you don’t get any more rock ‘n’ roll than that!
Dreamboats and Petticoats runs until Saturday. Box office: 023 8071 1811
