Lighthouse, Poole Life used to be so much simpler.Villains spoke with clipped German accents, while heroes were lantern-jawed, self-deprecating and ruggedly handsome even when sporting a pencil moustache.
Oh – and the Scots allowed you to stereotype them without so much as a grumble!
Such was the world of this much-loved classic thriller. This hugely entertaining stage adaptation retells the story affectionately tonguein- cheek. A cast of just four adroitly present an array of characters and transport us, with delightfully inventive set and sound effects, from the heart of London to the highlands of Scotland.
They are all top-flight performers, especially the dashingly cavalier Dugald Bruce-Lockhart as Richard Hannay.
Alfred Hitchcock directed the original Robert Donat film and references to his other classic movies pepper this fast-moving production, clever little asides that add yet more glee.
It’s great fun from start to finish and this splendid cast do justice to this three-time award winning show.
