THEY are living proof that when it comes to kids, nothing beats a good old fashioned song and dance.
The packed audience at Southampton Guildhall did not sit still for a minute as they lapped up every second of what The Wiggles had to offer.
The seasoned childrens’ entertainers did not stop for the entire one hour and a quarter show, using instruments, costumes, rhyme and song to delight the hoards of preschoolers and their equally enthusiastic parents.
Even grandparents were not safe from their intoxicating blend of humour and music as every pair of hands could be seen air-drumming at one stage.
Children’s classic songs including a magical version of Twinkle Twinkle - that had my little one mesmerised - went hand in hand with ditties about fruit salads with an array of costumes including water melons, blueberries and a bunch of grapes.
The audience seems to be more worn out than the Australian quartet, reportedly the highest earning entertainers in their homeland, as Sam, Murray, Jeff and Anthony ensured plenty of crowd participation and using favourite characters like Dorothy the Dinosaur were never far from shaking hands among their fans as they wandered through the aisles at every opportunity.
The Wiggles proved that after nearly 20 years in show businesses you don’t need fancy gimmicks, state of the art props or over complicated characters – if the hoards of fans in Southampton are anything to go by, the simple formula of enthusiastic entertainment was as big a hit as you are likely to see.
