IN this powerful, condensed three-hander of Shakespeare’s much-loved tragedy, director Robin Belfield skillfully turned Othello’s usual image on its head.
Set in the modern-day Bahamas, with the character of Othello now a ‘Conch’ (a derogatory term for a white Bahamian) against the more easily recognised Bahamian nationals, and focusing on just the main characters of Othello, Desdemona and Iago (Cassio is only present over the CAB-style radio), he has emphasised how universal the central themes of love, loyalty and jealousy really are, particularly when fuelled by cultural tensions.
The Studio’s intimate venue enhanced each actor’s compelling performance.
Craig Pinder commanded the performance space as tortured and manipulated Othello, while Belinda Owusu’s naïve Desdemona’s descent into betrayal and despair was heartbreaking to watch.
Moses Hardwick was wonderfully wicked as the deviously scheming, yet charming, traitor, Iago.
Combined with beautifully minimalistic scenery, creatively atmospheric lighting and excellent sound effects, the audience was captivated by this innovative yet authentic production.
Othello continues tonight.
