John strikes to save the day at Blackpool
BLACKPOOL 2 SAINTS 2
Stern John ensured Saints left Bloomfield Road with a fourth successive draw.
Nigel Pearson is still looking for his first win as Saints boss after five games in charge but John's second-half equaliser, after Gregory Vignal had given the visitors a half-time lead with his third penalty in four games, ensured another battling point.
Vignal's outstanding penalty was also his third in as many games away from home following his spot-kick successes at Scunthorpe and Wolves.
The injustice of his sending off at Molineux was forgotten as he capped an excellent first-half display following the rescinding of his three-match ban with another emphatic finish inside the right-hand upright.
This time Paul Rachubka was the goalkeeper whose despairing dive failed to keep out Vignal's finish.
The Frenchman's strike was Saints' first on target of a first half that was played in the windiest of conditions on the north-west coast.
Nigel Pearson kept faith with the same side that left the pitch at Wolves after a creditable 2-2 draw on Tuesday night but he shuffled his midfield quartet, with Mario Licka switching from the left flank to the right.
Jhon Viafara was handed a central role alongside Youssef Safri, while Jason Euell lined up on the left.
Saints struggled to get to grips with the conditions at an exposed Bloomfield Road.
Marek Saganowski attempted a volley from the edge of the area which seemed to be heading in the approximate direction of the goal before a gust took it out for a throw-in.
And when Euell attempted to cross from the left, the ball landed back at his feet, boomerang-style!
Saints continued to look solid at the back but Rachukba dived at the feet of Licka and Saganowski before Wes Hoolahan, an exciting presence on the left of midfield, volleyed past Michael Poke's left-hand upright following an exchange of passes with Keith Southern.
Poke's first save on his full debut was an outstanding stop that denied former AFC Bournemouth midfielder Claus Jorgensen midway through the first half.
The 22 year-old dived low to his right before tipping behind the Dane's goal-bound cross shot with his finger tips.
Ian Evatt headed the resulting corner over the bar.
Then Stern John won the 30th-minute penalty from which Vignal gave Saints the lead.
After good build-up play between Euell and
Saganowski, John was fed inside the area. With three Blacpool defenders surrounding him, the Trinidadian did well to keep possession before he was adjudged to have been felled by Kspars Gorkss.
VIGNAL made no mistake and, at the other end, Poke did well in diving at McPhee's feet and keeping out a Hoolahan effort wither side of a quality delivery from Saints' in-form left back, who found Saganowski unmarked.
The Pole's left-foot strike from the inside-left channel flew narrowly past the far post. Half-time:
BLACKPOOL 0 SAINTS 1
At half-time, two of Alan Ball's children, Jimmy and Keely, and the Saints legend's sister Carol, were presented with a cheque for the Bobby Moore foundation and Blackpool replica shirts with Ball' and the number eight on the back for the late World Cup winner's grandchildren.
Prior to the match, a portrait of Ball, who began his career with Blackpool and finished it with Saints, was unveiled and will hang in the reception at Bloomfield Road.
Two defensive lapses in six second-half minutes shortly after the interval cost Saints dear.
Midfielder Keith SOUTHERN equalised with a 49th-minute free header after beating his man at the near post to meet right-back Shaun Barker's cross.
And six minutes later a weak clearance following a Stephen Crainey free kick fell to centre back GORKSS, who atoned for giving away Saints' first-half penalty by volleying Blackpool into a 55th-minute lead with Poke unsighted.
After receiving treatment for several minutes just inside Saints' half, Davies had to be helped from the field on the hour mark, when he was replaced by Alexander Ostlund.
Ostlund took his customary place at right-back, with Jermaine Wright switching to central midfield and Jhon Viafara moving into the heart of the defence alongside Wayne Thomas.
A few minutes later Stern JOHN equalised with his 15th league goal of the season.
After Euell's near-post header from Mario Licka's corner had hit the lgs of Rachubka, the ball ran loose to John on the edge of the six-yard box and he made no mistake in adding to his tally.
Saganowski had a header comfortably saved and Euell had a penbalty appeal for handball turned down during a goalmouth melee before Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Blackpool's right-sided midfielder, beat Viafara and sent a cross skidding across Poke's six-yard box.
Poke continued his confident display by saving an Evatt header and punching clear a Barker cross.
Blackpool continued to look dangerous and Hoolahan twice missed the target, the second time after a rare mistake from Vignal.
Poke then caught the ball at the second attempt as he challenged for a Rachubka punt with sub Ben Burgess.
Bradley Wright-Phillips and David McGoldrick were introduced as 73rd-minute substitutes for Saganowski and John but failed to make an impact.

I believe this point is fair enough,as long as we start winning games at home, beginning on Tuesday - a huge game. It's not long ago we'd probably have lost games like today's. The problem today is that other teams have got good results which we need to begin to match, especially as we have a tough series of games in April.
Could I ask that people don't bother to respond to idiot comments from supporters of other teams - it only encourages them.

I'm seriously worried now, most other teams around us today won and we could't beat Blackpool! I think I'll prepare for League 1 and if we stay up, I won't be disapointed! Hope Davies is ok for Tuesday!

Looking forward to comments about the performance from anyone that went.
The form guide would say this is a good result. We at least seem to be more resilient and able to grind out draws. That is a good start.

I was following the game on ESPN Soccernet. The Saints "scored" the winner in the 76th minute, but it was credited to Lewis Alessandro! Somehow Oldham's last goal got awarded to the Saints. I fear this is the only way we'll ever win a game now!

What's also worrying is the potential last 4 of the cup. 3 poor Championship sides (Barnsley, Cardiff, Bristol R) and Pompey. Talk about giving it to them on a plate.

A good away point today. 3 points on Tuesday are a must. I hope Davis is fit he will be a big loss to the team. It's starting to get a bit too close for comfort now.
I wonder where we would be if Burley was still in charge?

useful point today, most teams are happy with a point away from home but we could do with a couple of wins soon, we are now getting hard to beat and we are also battling for the full 90 now, hope Davies is ok he'll be a big miss. One good thing about the Pompey win is that this site should stay skate-free tonight as they are busy celebrating but come tomorrow it'll probably be full of 'em, I hate to say it but I think its probably theirs this year, you need a bit a luck and they had a bag full today, I remember our cup run in '76, still let them have their moment, we've had a few over the years when we were in the ascendancy.
Just read the Dyer/BWP theft story, what do you reckon? £30 quid each for the phones in cash converters add that to the dosh, throw in the cigs and wallet and hey presto they could be the clubs new investors !!!! he, he, well you gotta laugh aint ya, mind you the bar was in Southsea so the phones were probably nicked anyway!

"This clubs needs a reality check"
Nigel's comment is the only statement, in the last 4 years or so, from an official or player in the Club that hits the nail on the head.
I hope he can keep us up this term and be given his head next season. If so, I think he'll be a terrific manager for Saints.
If he's subjected to board interference he'll leave, be "the manager that got away" and we'll be doomed for years to come.

BWP's attitude on the pitch often stinks and we can all see now what he is really made of - kick them both out of the club.

Many of us have stuck with the club through thick and thin. This year has been awful but we still pay our money and cheer them on. I for one will never again pay to cheer on the club and the team unless the board and manager take firm and strong action now. No fudging it - kick them out now and we might be able to retain a little of our dignity. Always been proud to support the Saints but I cannot support the team and club if these two stay. How can anyone cheer on these two scum bags?

Shocking. I would say sack them but football is so fickle another club would actually consider buying them. Our financial situation is poor so even £500 would be a bonus.

As a welcome aside to the continuing woes at St Marys, congratulations to all of the "unfashionable" clubs that managed to beat the big boys in the cup. And yes, that does include Pompey.
This weekend's results are great for football and we might actually get the first genuinely interesting FA cup final for years.
Just think what might have happened if we'd got a decent manger in earlier.....

I support my local Dorset Premier League team.

For information!
The Southern Daily Echo is readily available in Portchester, which is next door to Portsmouth!
If I buy a copy there, then surely I am able to comment on the content!
If not, why is it sold in a predominantly Pompey area?
As Martin said, 'There is a world outside St Mary's'!
I had not realised that so called 'football fans' could be so sensitive!
On these pages they can 'dish it out' to their Chairman, board of directors, manager, team and even each other, but when someone else teases them, they throw their toys out of their prams, and get the comment withdrawn!
The old saying, 'If you can't take a joke, you should not have joined' springs to mind!
Oh! As I come from Pompey! Don't let anyone read this in case they are offended!
Get it pulled!

Found this on teamtalk.com
'Photographs of striker Bradley Wright-Phillips and winger Nathan Dyer, reportedly taken from CCTV in a Hampshire nightspot in the early hours of Thursday February 28, emerged in a newspaper over the weekend.
Allegations of theft at the nightclub have also been made, and Saints revealed they are now awaiting details of any police inquiry before taking further action.
In a statement on the club's official website, Pearson said: "The matter of the late-night socialising by these players has already been strongly dealt with internally.
"As far as the other allegations are concerned, the club views these seriously but will await full details and will then decide on what action to take."
Wright-Phillips was dropped for Saints' home game with Ipswich the following Saturday, while Dyer is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.'

When we were in the lower leagues in the late 80's/early 90's it was common to see Portsmouth footballers out on the town in mid week. I suppose that's the difference between true professionals and players who have a comfortable life without making it to the top..

I have no doubt that, given good fortune, the vast majority of Pompey's fans would make TWO trips to Wembley! Certainly I will, if we beat WBA!
Am rather lost on a couple of your comments though!
Please explain the following, 'I am not to should your giro will stretch that far'?
and, what the hell is a 'penelty'?
With regard diving!
I think there is only one place in Hampshire noted for diving, and the person who made it famous was a person named Brian Phelps!
His local football team have since consistently followed his example!
I seem to recall that he has not exactly heaped pride on the city since those days!

but just remember all those years you lot were in deeper than us, while we were enjoying our time in the premier league. so soon enough we will be back in our place in the premier league and you will all be gone soon enough
so go back to the docks and talk it up with your fellow skates
[bold]COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!![/bold]

You scum pr*ck!!! How is your caravan?
We may have a sh*t ground but at least building a new one hasn't cost us a place in the best league in the world, and almost put us into administration.
Enjoy the game at Blackpool did you? Massive that must have been. HA HA HA HA!!
The saying must be true.....
Jealousy is an ugly thing.
Enjoy your relegation scrap tonight, I'm sure Milan will be offering more money to the Leicester players to beat you're sorry excuse for a club.
Go beg Arsenal for some more money, or better still send out some more of your players on the rob again so they can help pay the bills that are building up!!
OH WEMBLEY WEMBLEY!!!! HA HA HA HA!!!
