Pearson: We must keep our nerve
 |
| Nigel Pearson |
NIGEL PEARSON believes his side need to hold their nerve between now and the end of the season to avoid relegation.
Saints could only manage a goalless draw against fellow relegation strugglers Coventry at St Mary's at the weekend but with other results it didn't really cost them too dear.
However, they now have a tricky last six games to negotiate during which their fate will be sealed.
Pearson said: "It is difficult at times but you have to deal with it.
"We're in the position we're in and there's no kidding ourselves it's easy because it isn't.
"We need to hold our nerve."

The team is rubbish two wins twelve points in fourteen games in 2008 a truly shocking performance for a team which we were told was heading for the play offs.
Southampton 0-0 Coventry
Hull 5-0 Southampton
Southampton 1-0 Leicester
Blackpool 2-2 Southampton
Wolverhampton 2-2 Southampton
Southampton 1-1 Ipswich
Southampton 0-2 Plymouth
Stoke 3-2 Southampton
Southampton 2-3 QPR
Crystal Palace 1-1 Southampton
Southampton 0-1 Norwich
Plymouth 1-1 Southampton
Southampton 1-0 Scunthorpe
Southampton 0-3 Watford
I canot see many points coming from the rest of the games either
Cardiff v Southampton
Southampton v Bristol City
Charlton v Southampton
Southampton v Burnley
West Brom v Southampton
Southampton v Sheff Utd
S we will be back where we were were fifty years ago.

Always assuming that other clubs in the Championship are useless and all we have to do is turn up and win.
This team is the worst in fifty years are probably wil get relegated

However, where's the fighting spirit - lets not give up til the fat lady sings - Come on Saints fans, I know its difficult but not so many negatives - we can still stay up, but then the problems may begin-where do we take it from there? We need a new board and new investment fast!

I agree with the two sentiments above, probably there worst Saints team in my memory, and let not give up until the end. I am very worried that we lack the basic ability to a) clear the ball from the danger areas, and b) hold onto the ball in either midfield or upfront. I got quite emotional on Saturday, when I saw all those older ex players, still wearing their club shirts in their hearts. I thought that Brian O'Neil was going to start diving into tackles etc. If only our current bunch of mercenaries had 25% of the commitment of those ex players! Given my comments above, we are crying our for a bit of flair, so at least we can hurt other teams, not just bring constand pressure on ourselves. I reinforce what Big Banana says, come on Saints Fans let's get behind the team, and hope for the best in terms of a complete clearout next season, with a new board plus investment and players who have both ability, commitment and passion for our proud club. Unfortunately in our current position our efforts to be more creative will only result in leaving more gaps at the back....I think a clean sheet is very encouraging! Keep it tight and we will pick up a couple of 1-0's..

If you want to be realistic, you have to look at the quality of players that have LEFT SFC during the past ten years, and compare them with the quality of those that have ARRIVED!
To read the comments on here, and the criticism of certain players shows a lack of understanding by some of the contributers!
They are comparing the performance of current players with those of a few seasons back, but in truth, the only similarity is the shirts they wear!
Premier League quality players have been sold and replaced by cheaper, lower league standard players, and the customers then expect them to 'up their game' to Premier League quality!
It is not going to happen!
No player WANTS to lose - they all want to be WINNERS!
It is plain to see that they are playing to the best of their ability, and their ability is not of the standard that brings success in the league they play in.
Succesive managers have been on a minimal budget, and have bought THE BEST THEY COULD AFFORD - not the best that was available!
Until there is a change of attitude in the board room, there will not be much change on the field!

Nigel Pearsons appointment and status so far shows a clear lack of expierienc.
I am now even more convinced we have it wrong! The debacle @ Hull where clearly a more expierienced manager would have employed tactics to ensure we didnt loose the game. However that seems to be Pearsons tactics for home games!
For me Saturday was a clear case where width was required and clearly Hammil or Surman should have been used but Pearson ignored both and some more aware members of the crowd.
Before all you spout off how good it is that he is here consider these thoughts: A Manager is there to make [bold]Big Decisions[/bold] and do of his best to effect the results of games and [bold]I have seen plenty of passion from Pearson but no tactical nouse and I am very concerned as to where we are going to end up?[/bold]

Yes you are so right, he has not got a clue,PILLICK.
But for Pearsons appointment, there would be no debating whether or not Saints would or would not be relegated, they would have gone by now.
Still Chris Coleman at Coventry has the TACTICAL NOUSE that you so crave for Mike, where are they?,just a thought!

657?! what are you on? You remind me of why I chose Saints over Pompey, and if I were to choose again the choice would be the same.
I seriously hope that you become wise enough to see your folly sooner rather than later.
As for Saints, I think that it will come down to the wire. If we are professional enough then we should be able to capitalise on the situations of our opponents. Then we should be able to at least have our fate in our own hands.

A fifth rate chairman who has actually paid out of his own pocket for the statue of Ted Bates.
Still if it was down to Rupert Lowe,we would probably be looking at a cardboard cut-out.

Have to agree with what Sailor Sam is saying as regards money, this has to some extent destroyed the game we once knew. Pompey were in a precarious position 4 or 5 years ago and narrowly missed relegation from the Championship only to gain promotion the following year.
Why? Because they had a major investor come in and buy the calibre of players they needed to be a Premiership Club. This has continued with 27 million having recently been spent on players.
Long gone are the days when British Clubs were represented by local players. Saints unfortunately have bred some of the best players in the game thru their Acadamy...Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale, Scott McDonald, Wayne Bridge are a few examples.
We, like most teams, are now an assortment of players from around the Globe, few who really identify to Southampton and sadly the game is all about the clubs who can afford to buy world class players.
A manager can make a difference as Barnsley, WBA and Cardiff have proved that the lesser teams can beat the Giants and this to me is really good for the game.
Saints, if they survive do have a Manager who I believe is capable of doing some great things for the Club as long as they can avoid the drop.
Bringing in Wright was a great move as this has and should continue to build the confidence in the defence. But allow Nigel one more player before Thursday...a leader, a motivator...someone with experience such as Chris Marsden once was to the Club.
I believe the Saints can survive and Nigel will succeed . GLTA!!!

Still it is refreshing that for the first time in the history of SFC,a Chairman has ACTUALLY put money into SFC,instead of TAKING money out of SFC.
Its a shame Leon never had the oppotunity of being the Chairman when Saints were in the Premiership,we would still be there now.
He would not worry about shareholders.

Saints have many claims to fame but, let's face it, their fanbase is not one of them.
I would be seriously concerned at this Pearson quote if I was one of them, this reads like a '[bold]We Have Lost Our Nerve[/bold] ' statement to me, yowsers!!!!

I note that 657 claims to come from Soton! This does not surprise me as the old 657 crew are now in their late 40's and 50's, and had the intelligence to retire when they saw how efficient CCTV was in identifying trouble makers, first at the Hysell stadium in Belgium, and pretty near every stadium since.
There are some adolescents who like to try and revive the name, but they do not put in an appearance outside of their own bedrooms!

Coventry our 1 point below us but they gained a point away from home on Saturday and we lost 2 + they have a game in hand!By the way they have a better goaldifference tan us as well!

pompey played a derby against Plymouth,at home in the cup.
On the same day it just so happened that Saints were also playing at home in the cup, a team bottomm of the Football League.
Saints had 10,000 more supporters than pompey on that date, what more PROOF do these deluded skates want for goodness sake.
Oh and it is also worth mentioning that pompey only took 157, yes 157 to Everton a few months ago,PATHETIC support.
They might have Premiership players but the support is no better than an average League 1 side, and that is not a dig, its realitity.
pompey is not a footballing city, SOUTHAMPTON on the other hand is without doubt a footballing city.

May I point out to Kamikaze Frank, the Aircraft Anorak, that I am not included in the 'We' in Pearson's quote.
With regard 'fanbase', where was the fanbase when the meeting, trying to sort out the future of the club, was held? We have more than that attend a monthly Pompey Supporters Club meeting!
So! You took a load of customers to Bristol for the cup-tie! They went there thinking it would be a walk-over! We saw their faces on TV After the match! Not exactly showing undying support for directors, manager or team then were they?
We did not have a 'full house' when we played Plymouth Argyle! Hardly the most attractive fixture of the season!
I don't know where Fanciful Frank got his figures for away support at Everton! Figures 'plucked from the air' when he was coming in for another bumpy landing perhaps!
I would remind him, there is no 'MIGHT' about it! Pompey DO have Premier League players, which is why THEY ARE THE ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM ON THE SOUTH CLUB! They buy to strengthen the team, rather than sell to strengthen the bank balance of shareholders!!!
So Pompey is not a footballing city, and Fictitious Frank's city is! Perhaps he could explain how he comes to that conclusion?
The nearest his city comes to quality football is having Pompey's PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB doing their training in that area!
Pompey are there as Footballing Missionaries, bringing quality football to an area deprived of quality football!
You should be extremely grateful Frank, and should write a letter of thanks to Harry Redknapp for the good work he is doing in your area!

Mind you, they are pretty poor in the city, and are lousy in football grounds!
It would appear that they do not like crowds, which is why only 75 turned up for the meeting with the club's directors, to unite for the benefit of the club's future!

For years we would read in the press that A N Other Saints manager had bid for a player, only for Rupert to stick his oar in and try to beat the price down, resulting in the desired player joining another club that recognised his true value. This tactic of Ruperts led to a succession of managers having to bring in second or third choice players, not because they would improve the team, but because Rupert would not support their judgement. This is why the Saints squad has become so weak and wishy washy. The standard of players now, compared to the ones we used to have, is like comparing Coca Cola to Happy Shopper Cola. There is no comparison! One is a top quality, world renowned drink and the other isn't worthy of shelf space. If you look at the players we sold, in the past, how many times was the outgoing player actually replaced by someone of better quality? You can't even claim we bought players out of the bargain basket as for them to have been a bargain they must first have proved themselves to have been worth having, something most have not done.

When I checked the NEWS pages, I see, in the 'Breaking News' that Dyer and BWP have been on a visit to Portsmouth again, but not to a night club!
First glance, I thought that they were coming down here 'on trial', but it would appear that they were helping the other 'boys in blue' with their investigations!
Wonder why The Echo did not want us to comment on that story!
Has anyone got any ideas?

You did not have a full house against plymouth, you never have full houses at fratton, which is pretty poor considering you are in the premiership.
When Saints were there, they used to SELL OUT on a regular basis.
Thats the difference, and thats why pompey is not a footballing city, just look at the attendance for proof.
The 157 that pompey took to Everton has been proved on numerous football forums including pompey forums.
If you do not believe me, ring everton fc up,someone from the club has already confirmed this and it was shown on other forums.
Quality football and pompey in the same breath, do me a favour.
Was not that long ago that pompey went ten, yes 10 games at home without even scoring a frigging goal, verey entertaining is that.
But what is a joke, is that pompey are in the semis of the cup,and have had 9 shots on target in the 4 games that they have already played in the cup.
Nine shots on target,very entertaining,NOT!
As for Harry Rednapp, lets hope he is able to walk out at wembley,l would not bank on that one though.
Its quite easy to cheat spam, because lets be honest you are not the most trustworthy of clubs now are you.
Still in time all will be revealed l am sure.
If you stilll maintain the poor support that pompey have had is better than Saints answer me this.
Saints are having the worse season for 50 years, pompey are having their best season.
SPAM, how is it that despite you being in the premiership OUR HOME AVERAGE ATTENDANCE IS MORE THAN POMPEYS THIS SEASON.
There you go,try worming your way out of that one,oh clueless one.

No! There was Not a full house when we played Plymouth, and we Did Not take up our full allocation against PNE!
Why? Apart from the Stains, there is not one club in your league that would attract a full house at Fratton Park! When we are playing Premier League opposition week in, week out, teams from lower leagues do not attract a crowd!
Everton? I don't know where you got those figures from, and would be interested to hear of which Pompey forum you got your figures! Tell me, and I'll check!
I can't remember the actual figure - you say 10 - but we did go for a spell without scoring - but we also kept clean sheets! That is not something that your team have had an abundance of is it!
It is goals that count, not shots! I have seen the shots that your lot have made! Over the top, hitting the corner post etc etc! Very entertaining!
Why would Harry Redknapp NOT walk out at Wembley? Have you got a dolly that you are sticking pins into?
So we are an untrustworthy club! So where the hell has all the money SFC has been raking in for more than a decade? Look at the investment that has been made in 'class' footballers! Are you telling me that, as a customer, you are getting 'Value for Money'! If you say yes to that, then you do not deserve Premier League football - because you would not appreciate it!
You must be Thick!
You ask me why SFC has a higher average attendance for home games than Portsmouth, THE ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM ON THE SOUTH COAST!
Look at the ground capacity of SMS and the capacity of Fratton Park!
Take away the average gates from each, and see how many empty seats you average at SMS and how many at Fratton Park!
We cannot exceed our capacity, you cannot reach your capacity!
Now, if that makes me clueless, then explain to me how you can exceed capacity Oh Thick One!
You talk about your worst season for 50 years!
This is just the beginning! You have worse to come!
In the mire, and no investment to save you.
Unity is strength, and everyone on the board is rowing!
HAVE A NICE DAY!

OWTSGMI[/quote] OK Kamikazi Frank, lets take your points in order! Everton? I don\'t know where you got those figures from, and would be interested to hear of which Pompey forum you got your figures! Tell me, and I\'ll check! I can\'t remember the actual figure - you say 10 - but we did go for a spell without scoring - but we also kept clean sheets! Look at the investment that has been made in \'class\' footballers! Are you telling me that, as a customer, you are getting \'Value for Money\'! Loo
