Sid the tree gets the chop
 |
| FLASH BACK: Matthew Myatt with his son Thomas, 9, who tried to save Sid the Sycamore |
Campaigners fight to save one of Eastleigh's most historic trees have lost their battle this morning.
Shortly before 8.30am tree surgeons arrived at the Point to cut down a sycamore tree, named locally as Sid.
The tree was planted 72 years ago to celebrate Eastleigh becoming a borough.
It took less than three hours for two tree surgeons to hack down the much-loved tree.
Campaigner Matthew Myatt said: "It is devastating day for residents and a great loss for future generations."
Eastleigh Borough Council wanted the tree removed to allow for the extension of the Point Dance Centre.

I always understood that the Chamberlain McDonalds gave the rec to the people of Eastleigh for them to enjoy as an open space.
If this is correct, how can this building work be justified legally or morally?

How nice to know that the people elected to represent the residents of Eastleigh, do not listen to what they want, once they are elected!

This just proves a point, they'll do or say anything to get elected. After that we don't matter. they'll just 'steam roller' their way through.

Am I the only one that thinks Shazza (No such name) is thick. EBC always does what the people that elected them don't want them to do. For instance, build on allotments, destroy historical buildings and remove a tree that was put there in celebration on land that was gifted to the borough, not the weasels in EBC.

That won't stop the Council from shutting down the Point Dance Centre in a year or so and building flats there.

Utterly disgusting behaviour by Eastleigh Borough Council. Did their so called 'planners' not have the experience or know how to actually include the tree in their new building plans? For example, in a little courtyard area, where the 'young people' that will supposedly use these new facilities could have had their breaks, sat under this lovely tree's shade.
I wonder how long it will be before the Council decide to go against their policy once more, to take yet another piece of public land?

Did you see the size of that dog handler who was closing the fencing, you would not want to mess with him, probably hence why 'swampy' clone did not do anything!
Why oh why did the tree surgeons chip Sid, surely they could have used his logs to help the OAP's of Eastleigh to keep warm? If Sid had been blown over due to high winds or whatever and crashed through the top of a building, you can bet that the council would be getting it in the neck for not preventing that happening.
One tree in Eastleigh compared to hundreds of acres every day in the rain forest, it does not really compare does it?

Where were all the protesters when the tree was being cut down? All councillors are self obsessed twats and do not care what others want, and yes christoff the carbon foot print is a fact of life and had you listened at svhool you would know that trees use carbon momxide and produce oxygen.

People of Eastleigh - write to your MP about the appalling abuse of local authority power. How dare they ride rough shod over your rights and destroy that beautiful tree.Withhold your council tax payments in protest, demand a meeting with your local councilor to ask what else they intend to do that the people object to.How dare they hide behind security guards and the police - they are accountable to the people.I will be voicing my disgust to EBC even though I am 130 miles away. This sort of action needs addressing before our democratic state becomes a police state or has it already?

72 years ago Eastleigh may have been a nice area, however, it is now a complete dump.
Hopefully this is the start of a clean up of Eastleigh, level it and start again.

I do not think this is the end of the matter. The actions by the "council" are in the grey area of legality as a court challenge to the felling of sid was pending. Whatever the outcome, let us not have short memories come next election time.
Shame on you, ECB!

I was not there today simply because our locally elected Council chose to use OUR MONEY, at probably "DOUBLE TIME" to employ a team of "Tree Surgeons" (That's a contradiction in terms in this case, surgeons are supposed to save lives not end them)PLUS A SECURITY FIRM (No doubt to protect the faceless people who authorized this murderous act) to hack down a tree when they knew that some people would be away enjoying the Easter Break. I am also concerned that this whole issue now goes further than saving a tree. It exposes fundamental flaws in a process that sets in place a system to LEGALLY register a protest, but then TOTALLY IGNORS that system. Our locally elected council officials should be held in contempt of court for showing total disregard to a legal process. RIP Sid Gone but NEVER EVER forgotten.

I find it crazy that most of the flames on here are from young teenage girls. If you had bothered to follow the whole issue you would have worked out that the guy that took the stand to save this tree was doing so to protect the rights of your future children and their children. Its more than just about a tree, its about the rights of people to have green open spaces, this tree was after all on public land that belongs to the people and so did the tree. Perhaps if he wore a hoodie and said 'init' to the TV crews you would have listened more, and understood what was really going on. As for me, I want to say well done to the guy, I know he has taken a lot of flack over this issue, but my god he stuck to his guns and tried to do something rather that sit drinking vodka and saying everything is so unfair.. Well done sir, you have more balls than any councillor, at least you faced the cameras to explain your point, where were they..?? Never will I vote Lib Dem in Eastleigh.!!

I think most of the people understood exactly what Matthew was doing, it is a shame to read the horrid comments about him as I do know him. He is a great guy who cares deeply for Eastleigh. He is not a tree hugger, although in fairness Matthew, time to get out and do some shopping now and invest in a new razor and a better hat. What he has achieved by highlighting this issue will have a lasting effect on many of us in Hampshire. For those who want to criticise that’s fine, but have a valid point and ask yourself, what have you done for your community. Well done Matthew. Now take a well deserved rest.

One of these days I will hear one of them admit that they are SERVANTS. They are elected to SERVE the electorate or are empoyed as local governments SERVANTS (I know they prefer the more grandiose term of "officers" - makes them feel they have some authority over the people who pay them).
I spent most of my working life working for local authorities and never forgot I was there to serve the needs of local people. Unfortunately, now it's a case of empire building and bullying as this case clearly demonstrates.

Using the Bank Holiday, when they knew all who would turn up to stop them, as a cover for carrying out this illegal act was shameful.
Somewhere, some Council employees had a meeting and decided to use the religious festival of Easter to ensure that most of those who would have tried to stop them were away visiting family. Matthew was left alone at the last with the tree he had tried to save - a warrior in the true sense of the word.

Is there any way, do you think that 'visiting performers' could stay in one of the two large hotels or dozen B&Bs we have here in Eastleigh? It would cost less than building and maintaining 'self-contained two bedroom flats' and give local hoteliers some trade.[italic]italic[/italic]

Hitler in Germany and Stalin in Russia would have acted in this way. I wonder, with which of these, EBC most closely identifies? They certainly have as much contempt for wishes of the people who elected them.

Today saw the DESTRUCTION of a beautiful HEALTHY tree. Just before am on this Bank Holiday Monday the EXECUTIONERS moved in and just after lunch, their job done left and went home to enjoy their Bank Holiday
EASTLEIGH BOROUGH COUNCIL DEATH SQUAD, you have been warned my vote WILL go to the other party. You are as underhanded as our Labour Government.

Have your say by all means about Sid but in fairness if you dont know Matthew keep your prejudices to yourselves.

Thankyou for defending the tree Matt!
It's a shame the council couldn't have made plans to work around the tree, i think its time people stop thinking of trees as mere obstructions and realising their real importance especially perfectly healthy, older ones.
The world would be a greener place with more Matt's!

I have watched the posts on this issue for a couple of days, and have not commented on them, even the ones that have attacked me on a personal level, which is fine, it is after all because of people protesting that these people have the right to attack me. However, its water of a ducks back. The real issue here is a serious one, and I would like to thank all the people who have posted comments that have added to the debate and avoided the need to attack me for exercising my legal right to protest to save the open spaces and green land for the future of others in Eastleigh who are to young to have a voice, or unable to stand out in the cold and fight for our rights, my own children included. I will end with one final fact. Sid and the recreation ground was free to use by 100% of the population. The new dance studio will be used by 7% of the Eastleigh population that once had access to this land and Sid. (EBC own figures, Document’s available to view and check at council offices.) The council have taken free open public space and turned it into a loss making, council tax subsidised business at a cost to the remaining 93% of the people who have lost this land of £320,000.00 a year. (Again council own figures, available to view at council offices.) If I am a tree hugger for trying to stand up for the majority of the people’s rights, then this is a hat I wear with pride..

I didn't ask you to protest on my behalf Matthew, nor did I vote for you.
I've never seen such a load of fuss over nothing. It's one tree - one! Not a Brazilian rainforest. The rest of the open space is still free for the population to use isn't it? Sometimes, Matthew, things have to give way to allow for new developments.
EBC are voted in by the electorate to act on behalf of the majority. EBC, like the government, like any other elected body, can't please all of the people all of the time. I don't climb a tree or protest outside council offices when they raise my council tax, or they introduce nbew parking charges. I do what other, moderate, democratic people do, and change my vote.
Your actions have cost EBC tax-payers money in requiring EBC to employ security guards etc.
How and when will you refund me Matthew? It's a two-way street.

Dave S - get a grip. "executioners", "death squad"? You're not a journo for the Echo are you? No wonder people are turned off to the idea of protecting a tree with sensationlist posts and headlines like this. I expect EBC could do without your vote.
