Today's most viewed
West Quay counts down to big switch off
IT'S 24 hours to go - and
Southampton's biggest
shopping centre is counting
down the hours until
darkness descends in the
Earth's biggest blackout.
The Southampton shopping mall
is among the landmark buildings
around the world turning off the
lights for one hour on Saturday
night. Other iconic structures taking
part in the big switch-off
include Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Golden Gate
Bridge in San Francisco and
Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower.
It is hoped that the blackout in
major cities across the globe will
save energy and raise awareness of
climate change.
Southampton's skyline could look
very different during Earth Hour
as familiar buildings around the
city turn off their lights from 8pm.
The Mayflower theatre, the Civic
Centre and clock tower, the
Skandia building and the Daily
Echo's headquarters will all be
plunged into darkness along with
Hampshire Constabulary's HQ,
Hampshire County Council's
offices and Winchester Cathedral.
Householders are also being
encouraged to join the blackout,
which created a ten per cent energy
reduction in Sydney when the
scheme was piloted there last year.
A WestQuay spokesman said:
"We feel it is incredibly important
to support an event like this to
raise awareness of the issue of climate
change by encouraging people
to stop and think about all of
the energy wasted every day.
"We have encouraged all retailers
within WestQuay to switch off
their display and non-essential
lighting, as well as all our employees
to do their bit and turn off their
lights at home."
The shopping centre - which uses
a renewable energy provider -
reduced its energy consumption by
12 per cent last year and hopes to
increase that saving to 31 per cent
in 2008.
Meanwhile, the Art House cafe in
Bedford Place is hosting a pre-
Earth Hour event tonight, including
a candlelit sing-song and poetry
readings.

My frustration is that it appears we are going to get one of these stories everyday but with a different company name added in.

As long as we don't save too much energy. Otherwise there would be implications for the National Grid.
And unless a lamp is tungsten or light emitting diode it uses more energy to switch it on than to keep it running, and also reduces its operating life.

Bleh. The whole idea of Earth Hour is so ridicilous that I for one will turn on all my electrical appliances for that hour. Global warming and climate change has lost its real focus with goverment bodies and corporations furthering their own agendas with issues that seem to matter more to the public. I mean look at it. Everything now days is sold under the banner of 'green', it ranges from washing powders to cars. What I find the most amusing of it all is that England and the USA seem to be the only countries where green issues are a hot topic in the press. Comparing with the press outside of the UK, environmental issues are not blown so out of proportion, but on the other hand the press tend to be more sensationalistic than elsewhere.
Going back to the original point of West Quay shutting down its lights. I'd be a bit surprised if it made a significant difference. If all the shops etc wanted to make a change by cutting down on electricity consumption they should turn off each and every light for the night, including their dumb assed signs.

Im suprised they dont have a big electronic count down board to this exciting event.
Also its comical how a shopping centre that is closed will goto the effort to turns its lights off for 1 hour, then turn them back on. Its just hype and spin developed for thick people. If these big organisations and government actually cared they would be doing something other than turning their lights off for 1 pathetic hour

I will be leaving all my lights and appliances on during this hour while I go out to burn some tyres and leave my car running. This will compensate for this stupid hour that wont actually do anything to help or hinder the environment. Global Warming is a natural process not created by man. My whole family are scientists and we all knew this years ago and still know it today.

The longest is a fluorescent lamp at a massive 23 seconds so if you leave a room for longer than that then its cheapper to turn them off. That is rubbish

The longest is a fluorescent lamp at a massive 23 seconds so if you leave a room for longer than that then its cheapper to turn them off. In my experience, cheap Polish light bulbs are the most economical form of lighting there is.
You just fit a new bulb, switch it on and quickly memorise where everything is.
Then the bulb blows, automatically reducing power consumption.

Im quite suprised they have not done that aswell. they always contradict themselves and think they are doing something thats going to change the world but... what happens if an excess in rapes, theft and the likes occour, then they will make a big apology saying it was for a good cause? ridiculus?! I also wonder with all them lights being turnt off, will it cause a major power surge when they are turnt back on after the hours are up? then we will all be sat in the dark for a lot longer as it is highly likely we would have a major powercut!
