Teenagers risked their own lives to throw themselves off a Hampshire road bridge 25 feet into water below.
The youngsters ignored safety warnings to take part in the perilous craze of tombstoning.
Lining up one by one a group of around ten youths straddled the railing on the Redbridge Causeway before jumping into the Test river - just yards from the stone base of the bridge.
It was one of a number of scenes across the county where youngsters were risking their lives to cool off, including jumping off the bridge over the River Avon on the A31 at Ringwood.
Today a 20-year-old man was left fighting for life in Southampton General Hospital after plunging 30ft from a Hampshire pier
Police are investigating whether the man jumped or fell into three feet of water from South Parade Pier in Southsea yestrday afternoon.
The coastguard safety plea has also been echoed by Nick Biddlecombe, who was left wheelchair-bound when he shattered his neck in a jump at Lepe Beach eight years ago.
Nick, who is now 25 and requires round the clock care at his home in Cedric Close, Blackfield, said: "It is stupid to do it.
"I would say to those kids, look what happened to me'. You can go from normal to being wheelchair-bound in a matter of seconds."
Solent Coastguard watch officer Alan Waters said tombstoning was "pure stupidity".
"The people who do this are otherwise known as idiots," he said.
"The stark reminder is that it can end in paralysis or even death if they are unconscious in the water."
The Daily Echo did not encourage youngsters to take part in this activity and does not condone these actions.

By all means risk yourself, but what about the Police, Ambulance crews and volunteer lifeguards and RNLI who attended yesterdays incident.

If so then it would be up there with crossing roads, doing drugs, screwing around with knives and getting involved with politics.
All dangerous with some very horrible outcomes if it goes wrong, which most kids will mess around with.
To overstate the dangers to kids only gives you apathy. No doubt the parnets of the kids have already told them not to do it so the children are using thier own decision. If the parents haven't expressed an opinion to the kids then it's either out of apathy or they did it as kids and don't want to be hypercritical. So having it in the paper is probably not making much difference there.
As for picking up the pieces and saving beds in the NHS or saving out precious children here is a more intereting thing. The children who doing this are at least being active, They seem to be (as I've seen them) fit, happy, healthy kids. So with that in mind they will less at risk in later years than the overweight, fat blobbs which this country is so desperate to turn out. Save the kids????? Switch off the games machine, kick the fat little ####### out of the house, tell them go jumping in the river as it is isn't going to kill them unless they don't know the difference between low and high tide.

If seriously injured in ties up hospital beds and resources, and if parylised then further ties up much needed resources. It is idiotic in the extreme and soem othe rperson has got to pick up the pieces.
As this occurs every year do you think that this would represent a residual danger to children. If so then it would be up there with crossing roads, doing drugs, screwing around with knives and getting involved with politics.
All dangerous with some very horrible outcomes if it goes wrong, which most kids will mess around with.
To overstate the dangers to kids only gives you apathy. No doubt the parnets of the kids have already told them not to do it so the children are using thier own decision. If the parents haven't expressed an opinion to the kids then it's either out of apathy or they did it as kids and don't want to be hypercritical. So having it in the paper is probably not making much difference there.
As for picking up the pieces and saving beds in the NHS or saving out precious children here is a more intereting thing. The children who doing this are at least being active, They seem to be (as I've seen them) fit, happy, healthy kids. So with that in mind they will less at risk in later years than the overweight, fat blobbs which this country is so desperate to turn out. Save the kids????? Switch off the games machine, kick the fat little ####### out of the house, tell them go jumping in the river as it is isn't going to kill them unless they don't know the difference between low and high tide.

Its the councils and parents responsiblity to provide these people with something to do during the holidays and weekends.
Schools should play their part with the education too.
Why don't we put up signs there, prehaps prosuting parents if they jump off.
I feel for the paramedics, seeing a maimed youngster shatters them emotionally.

I actually think that its great that kids are still able to enjoy themselves in this stupid "nanny-state" country, kids are wrapped too much in cotton wool and need to find their own entertainment which doesnt involve a playstation or computer etc. However, I was in Southsea yesterday when the lad jumped/fell from the pier and I just worried for the poor mum that would have received a call about her son!!

You (the Echo reporters) never seemed to worry about the Redbridge jumpers when you were located at 45, Above Bar but now that your newsroom is within telephoto lens range of Redbridge causeway you come up with this story every year. Seriously though it's up to the council (which one though) to erect higher barriers in this vicinity not only to save lives but to keep NHS costs down.

Last Summer I remember the Lee on Solent Helicopter attending as one of the jumpers was caught in the current and being dragged under the water. It was reported that he was clinging on for his life. How much must it cost to send a helicopter and its crew here.
One poster said there isnt an outside swimming pool in Millbrook but there is one at David Lloyd.

I used to jump off of the bridges at the causeway in Redbridge back in the 50's in fact we could find old boxes of ammo thrown in by the American troops as they left their camp at the top of Spicers Hill after the war it was great fun.

may i correct you russ it was not a jumper that heilcopper was called in for but for a young lad that was playing under the road bridge on a rope swing tied to the catwalk,when the tide came up about a foot, the lad did not know the river to well and i belive he never swam in rivers before but learned to swim in swimming pools he did not know all he had to do was to let go and walk out has the water at the time was deep in that part,and is the nearess tunnel to totton and not where the jumpers are, and the water speed was less than 2 knots flow due to it being a neap tide, its the normal problem we get over there people learning to swim in pools and thinking its the same in river and open sea
