Hampshire (230-6) beat Glamorgan (229-5) by four wickets with ten balls to spare

The Hampshire Hawks kept their slim Friends Provident Trophy hopes alive against the Glamorgan Dragons at the SWALEC Stadium.

But they have to beat the Worcerstershire Royals under the Rose Bowl floodlights on Tuesday night if they are to be in quarter-final contention going into the final two rounds of group games over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A four-wicket win, with ten balls to spare at Glamorgan's new £10m home, at least ensured that Tuesday's Sky-televised day-night match will be no dead rubber.

But Hampshire made heavy work of the win that saw them leapfrog Glamorgan, who are now bottom of the south-west group, and go within three points of the top two qualification places.

After a good all-round bowling display ensured a relatively modest victory target of 230, a 96-run opening stand between Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb laid the foundations for what should have been a more comfortable win.

But after Lumb played on for 35, left-handers Sean Ervine (1) and Carberry (65) were both bowled around their legs by off-spinner Jamie Dalrymple.

And when David Harrison returned to trap Greg Lamb (16) lbw and have Chris Benham (39) caught at point in successive overs from the River Taff End, Hampshire looked as though their last-eight hopes would end in the city still mourning FA Cup final heartbreak.

But Michael Brown and Jimmy Adams eased Hampshire nerves with a 44-run sixth-wicket stand in nine overs as the chase reached its climax.

Brown and Adams have batted together since their student days with British Universities but, strangely, yesterday's stand was their first partnership in a one-day match for the Hawks.

It did not show as they guided their county to the brink of victory before Adams (22) chipped Alex Wharf to mid-wicket with the finish line in sight.

Wicketkeeper Brown, in only his ninth one-day innings for Hampshire, kept his head to complete an impressive weekend with an unbeaten 35 that included the winning run against young Glamorgan seamer Ryan Watkins.

A maiden one-day hundred for Michael Powell, who faced 140 balls for his unbeaten 114, provided the cornerstone of the home side's innings of 229-5.

Captain Dimitri Mascarenhas (2-38) led the Hawks' attack by example from the Taff end and was well supported by the likes of Hamza Riazuddin, who bowled his allocation in one spell after taking a break from his A-levels to make his one-day debut.

Riazuddin replaced James Tomlinson, who was rested after his heavy recent workload, and responded with a very encouraging ten overs from the Cathedral Road End.

He swung the ball consistently and Greg Lamb again impressed with eight economical overs of off-spin.

Even so, Glamorgan looked like setting Hampshire at least 250 to win after a 145-run stand in 31 overs between Powell and Matthew Wood, an off-season signing from Yorkshire.

It ended when Wood (64) sliced an attempted cover drive to David Griffiths at third man.

Hampshire turned the screw when Tom Maynard (4), Dalrymple (0) and Ben Wright (0) were dismissed in quick succession.

Maynard, the son of Glamorgan manager Matthew, missed a slog against Mascarenhas, Dalrymple pulled Griffiths straight to Benham at mid-wicket and Wright flicked Ervine to deep mid-wicket as Glamorgan were reduced to 181-5 in the 43rd.

But Powell kept going and reached his maiden one-day hundred in his 174th limited-overs innings for Glamorgan.

He was well supported during the last seven overs by Mark Wallace, who was dropped by Ervine at mid-wicket on five while nurdling a run-a-ball 16*.

But Hampshire, who won the toss, bowled well enough at the end of the Glamorgan innings to secure a more than gettable target.
