High hopes for city marina

THIS is the stunning new look for the £50m Millennium Hotel in Southampton's Ocean Village Marina.

It's the centrepiece of a bold plan to recapture Southampton's title as the home of ocean sailing.

Alongside the 15-storey, 225-bed, glass-sided hotel will be a waterfront "events piazza" designed to lure back sailing races lost to regional rival Portsmouth.

Although planning permission for a hotel on the site, jutting out into the marina, was granted in 2006, the company behind the scheme wanted to redesign the building, which is now expected to open in 2010.

The building, which is intended to be a "four-star superior" hotel, has been altered to increase the glazing on the public floors at the base of the hotel and to make the guestrooms "float" above.

At the same time, the guestroom block has been moved towards the land to make the end of the promontory more of a destination and to provide a bigger outside dining area.

The glazing has also been extended to the ground floors to link the space with the outside events piazza, allowing events to spill outside from the hotel.

The piazza will boast five large statues depicting the coastlines of global ports with links to Southampton.

Other changes include the introduction of an environmentally-friendly sea-water cooling system instead of traditional air conditioning.

The project comes from Marina Developments Limited (MDL), the owners of Ocean Village Marina and the largest company of its kind in Europe.

Alan Chater of MDL said: "We are committed to building a high quality hotel on this key site in Ocean Village. The quality we expect is borne out by the quality of our first project as part of the Ocean Village masterplan, namely the Ocean Car Park, which has been awarded Best New Car Park 2008 and is shortlisted for a RIBA Design Award."

Gavin Hall of Savills' planning team, which prepared the application, said: "The revised plan is going to enliven the space. It opens up the ground floors so you can see through them and hold some spectacular events."

David Curtis-Brignell of hotel chain Millennium & Copthorne Hotels said: "The site will become a key business and leisure destination and the link from the ballroom to the events area will assist to attract major events into Southampton."

An ugly box reminiscent of the stacks of containers further along in the docks even the grain silos have more style!

How did this get past the planners it certainly has the cow factor. Did they copy plans from a council tower block design of the 1960's

Stick a big button and a few USB ports on the left hand end and you have a desktop PC!
This shows such a complete lack of artistic flair!
Who says all modern buildings have to be in a 'minimalist' style? The only people who seem to like them are architects!

The architect obviously looked to the hard-drive unit of his computer for inspiration!

"We are committed to building a high quality hotel on this key site in Ocean Village". Well, why don't they then, instead of this ghastly eyesore. Have we run out of good architects all of a sudden?

At least it will match the 60's style flats that have mouldy wood facia's, battle ship grey windows and balcony’s. They couldn't make it worst if they tried ....

Will it be too high for aircraft to fly over it? As is the case with the balloon.
Posted by: Baywatch, Dibden on 8:47am Wed 21 May 08
I've got a good idea, why not turn the whole area into a dock for merchant ships?
That would bring money into Southampton and there would never be the need to try and incorporate Dibden Bay into Southampton Docks!

Fantastic. Great news for Ocean Village. Stop moaning and get behind making OV something we can be proud of. Let's Hope Wilosn Bowden/Barratt start building and we can have sojme shops and more bars and restaurants. Well done Linden Homes - thought i'd never say that - for getting on with it!

Looks like Albion Towers to me.Is that the best that these highly paid architects can come up with?

This news is great - with buildings like this Southampton is moving into the 21st century. Ocean village is really proving to be a fantastic advertisement for any tourism that would come to Southampton.

A development like this puts Southampton at the forefront of European Marinas, something we should all be proud of!
Posted by: Frank Ferrana, Southampton on 9:23am Wed 21 May 08
Although the design may not be to everyone's taste (going by the comments posted here), this is still something that the whole city should be proud of as it symbolises Southampton moving forward and looking to the future.

Yeah it'll be great. As soon as they sort out the transport links into and around Southampton I'll fully support further development.

Ironic that the hopper link which would have served this location was scrapped. Let's hope they re-join their public transport thinking before this hotel opens, which I expect will be pushed back 3-4 years due to the recession.

Lets not forget that the round the word races start from Ocean Village, which proves to be a big crowd puller and of course the Southampton Boat Show. With Soton in close proximity to London the Olympics will also generate revenue.

It will take a lot more than a hotel like this to lure back the events from Portsmouth.

Almost without exception, any developments on Southampton's waterfront have consisted of apartment blocks, and now a hotel.

Portsmouth has however, in Gun Wharf Quays, provided a eclectic mix of residential apartments, entertainment, waterfront bars and restaurants and "unique" shops (as opposed to the bog standard shops in West Quay).

I have visited both Southampton and Portsmouth, and Gun Wharf Quays comes across as a vibrant and lively place with something to appeal to everyone, whereas I have to say that in Southampton I find the limited mix of apartment blocks, a hotel or two, the occasional convenience shop, restaurants with virtually no views and a cinema as utterly unattractive and not worth visiting, as well as being spread around so that no one place is worth visiting.

Southampton has far more opportunities than any place of comparable size that I know to exploit it's facilities, Ocean Village, Shamrock Quay, Town Quay, and now the Woolston VT site, but has manifestly failed to create a cohesive strategy with vision.

I think it is a real shame and a disservice to the residents and taxpayers of this city to see it so ill served by the planners and developers that have created this situation.

I thought that there was a limit on the height new buildings could be. That is why they didn't pull down telephone house but used it as a basis

Don't try to sell us this carbuncle with the word "Stunning", it's hideous, completely disjointed and nowhere near 4 star superior. Congratulations to Alan Chater for receiving an award for the Car Park but you're not meant to be designing another one ! Please, please, please give us something inspirational.

Why can't it look more like the Elephant & Castle Eco Tower in London? That looks amazing in contrast. As can be seen...

What a terrible idea ! The prestigious waterfront locations should be reserved for quality housing, the poor and benefit driven underclasses should continue to live in large estates in the less desirable areas of the City such as Millbrook, Lordshill and Swaythling.

As usuall everyone is keen put down an idea and critisise what others have done but no one comes up with a better idea, i think it that this will turn our town into a lot more tourist indistry,we have a pretty town that no one makes the most of, be pro-active for once and not hypicritical!! Its better than the falling down shopping mall that was never used!!

This is part of regeneration of Southampton, which it needs in my option, It may not be the most specatular looking building - it has great views over the marina and solent waters.
Just get behind it

Heh, he'll be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

Oh well, I'm quite proud of my groovy little house in my less desirable area thank you very much. I only go to Ocean Village to laugh at the prices in the Pitcher and Piano and watch the toffs complain about the god-awful service. Enjoy your "prestigious waterfront location", classist moron.

Erm, gilmore i think Hugh might have been taking the mickey a little!! Why ever paramjit is blaming the council for not spending millions of pounds buying private land to develop for housing association dwellings in a hugely expensive waterfront location is quite beyond me.are you mad! some people really are quite dim! i presume that person is on the dole and asking the council for everything in life and not earning a crust like the rest of us!!
Ps. i dont think the hotel is that bad at all and its an ideal location for a quality hotel. why knock it? get a life you lot!

Hehe, fair play, I hope so. It's hard to tell with some of the attitudes on this site.

I don't think old Parimjit was saying use Ocean Village for housing association dwellings, he was just saying the council should built houses for poor people. I'm a would-be first time buyer, but can't afford anything bigger than a one-bed flat at the moment ;)

Parimjit's not on the dole, anyway, he's a socialist hero! Keep fighting the cause, man.

Have you guys seen the artist impressions of the hotel in last night's Echo? It gives the whole thing a lot more impact and far more detail. It really does look like a quality structure that will not only stand out but also give both the marina and the city a prized asset.

I don't know what it is about some people in Southampton, but it seems that if you say that you don't like something, you're immediately accused of holding back progress, nimbyism, etc. The sad fact is the the proposed hotel looks awful in the architect's drawing. Now an architect's drawing always looks 500% better than the finished article - a drawing of Canberra Towers could look quite attractive in the right hands - so the completed hotel will probably look ghastly. It's not holding back progress to say that the design is not very nice. There's a good example of attractive modern architecture not far away at the Grand Harbour. This might not be to everyone's taste, but most people I know think the GH has been a great addition to Southampton's architecture. Then you look across the road at the Holiday Inn, which looks similar in shape at least to the proposed new hotel. Which do you prefer?
Good architecture can be slightly more expensive of course, and Southampton didn't didn't get where it is today by not taking the cheapest available option, did it?
Miranda: Where was the falling down shopping mall? Did you mean Ocean Village? That was a good place to visit actually, but nobody could afford the leases on the shops for long. Pity. I haven't been back to Ocean Village since that closed, except a couple of times to the cinema - I've got no reason to. I can look at blocks of flats from where I live now. Good points about other places like Gunwharf Quay. I've only been there a couple of times as I'm not that keen on outlet shops, but the space itself is much more attractive than anything in Southampton. Note to the planning department: Gunwharf Quay is in Portsmouth, a city just down the coast from here. Might be worth a look for a few ideas for Southampton that don't necessarily involve a lot of unattractive Lego buildings?
