Finance key to crunch Pearson talks today
 |
| Nigel Pearson |
Nigel Pearson will today meet Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde for the first time as he discusses his future as Saints boss.
Pearson is out of contract this summer and speculation has been raging over whether he will still be in charge when the new campaign kicks off in August.
Lowe and Wilde returned to Saints last week, replacing the likes of Leon Crouch who brought Pearson to the club and who publicly stated he believed he should be retained.
However, Lowe, chairman of the PLC board, and Wilde, chairman of the football board, are now in charge again at St Mary's.
It is clear that no decision appears to have been made by either party as to exactly what direction they will head in.
There are, though, lots of hurdles to overcome - and talks are expected to continue beyond today.
Pearson will have to enter into negotiations over any potential contract with money still at a premium at St Mary's.
If his own salary can be agreed, then there is still the matter of whether he is happy with the direction in which Lowe and Wilde want to push things at St Mary's.
It is also unknown whether Lowe and Wilde consider Pearson to be the right man to deliver the results they want.
Belts look likely to be tightened at St Mary's and, whilst some extra cash is to be put into the academy where it will make a big impact, it is the kind of money that will hardly touch the sides of the first team budget.
Nine players are out of contract this summer - Claus Lundekvam, Chris Makin, Alexander Ostlund, Inigo Idiakez, Darren Powell, Mario Licka, Nathan Dyer, Jermaine Wright and Simon Gillett - and few are expected to be retained.

Good luck Nigel you ARE the man for the job, it's just a question of if those two idiots (who know sweet FA about football) can see it.
The other factor of course is whether you can work with a couple of two faced liars!

Sorry to say but it looks like yet another season where we will under achieve.
We are told that Southampton would be a great club to buy as it has everything anyone would like in a club yet every year we go over the same old things why if we look that good to anyone looking to buy into the business!! Why are we still no nearer to someone coming into Southampton?
It is clear that with out some big money backing we will be an "as been" club living on our past.
Lowe is only there for himself not for the football club, and the fans, my other worry is if we do manage to get back to the top flight what would happen! I cannot see us able to mount a challenge in this division never mind the premiership.

Pearson will stay as it suits both sides. For Lowe and Wilde he's a cheap option and Lowe has never been scared to go for potential. Remember it got us relegated! Pearson hardly has an impressive current CV to find another manager's job. As to the out of contract players, none would appear to be essential to the club's future. Worry more about the players we do have under contract.

Nigel Pearson has done a great job since taking over and although i had my doubts he is a great manager. He had the players believing that they could stay up, and when we were 2-0 or 3-0 down he would go out on that touchline and go mad at them and thats what we need. GB always just stood there with his arms crossed and tried to be calm but Pearson tells the players when theyre doing **** and he doesnt take the crap. Like the BWP and Nathan Dyer situation he placed the biggest punishment he could on them and that shows that hes a disciplined manager. For Wilde and Lowe to not renew his contract would be a very bad decision and i really hope that we get him long term.

Mr Lowe may appear to be arrogant and a bit of a toff but we need him to make the correct decisions and he need's our support otherwise we could go into administration and have to sell off our assetts

This story is just a feed from the Lowe/Wilde camp.
An attempt to prepare us for the fact that Pearson will not be offered a contract. What sort of manager will be cheaper?
Of those players out of contract this summer I think that it would be fool hardy not to offer Licka, and possibly Ostland a contract. It would be akin to crushing your car to save petrol, then getting a taxi every day (we still have to pay loan player wages!!)

"It is also unknown whether Lowe and Wilde consider Pearson to be the right man to deliver the results they want".
"Belts look likely to be tightened at St Mary's".
The only direction our current economy might bring us is nowhere, and i`m starting to wonder what kind of results the two goblins Lowe and Wilde could demand from any manager. If Pearsons got any kind of social intelligence and personal ambition, he`ll be out of St.Marys before midnight!

crew657 - if you are really such a hard football hooligan why do you only ever gob off on a Saints page in the local newspaper ????? It amazes me that less than a week after winning the FA Cup all you want to do is act the hardman instead of celebrating your success. I bet the skates are really proud to list you as a fan.

I do hope that Mr Lowe and Mr Wilde consult with Nick Illingsworth before he decides whether to offer Nigel Pearson a contract.
They need his assurance that all the fans he represents are fully behind the manager.

I was never against Rupert Lowe during his previos realm as he got two of the three critical things in his time correct. The stadium and the academy, brilliant. The third and unfortunately the most important he got wrong, he failed to keep the club in the Premier. He failed by changing managers too often creating instability and a high turnover of players and in not investing heavily in the final season when the writing was on the wall. It is all Ifs and Buts however the fact is that no good Manger wanted to stay for the long term, ie Strachan or Hoddle, a good manager like Dave Jones was treated terribly. Anyone of these three if they had stayed would probably have built saints to a strong mid table side always fighting for a 5th or 6th place. Rupert fired the other managers he appointed. He must have thought Gray, Wigley, Sturrock had the qualities needed but was proven very wrong very quickly and at a very high price for all true saints. Mistakes he never seemed to acknowledge or learn from.
Ruperts track record in hiring new managers is awful, even when he gets a good one he cannot keep them. My advice to Rupert is let someone else interview and appoint the manager on your behalf. Someone who understands the game, Saints and our current plight. I suggest you ask Jimmy Case and Dave Merrington to hire the manager, tell them the terms and conditions that saints can afford and let them get on with it. If Nigel Pearson is the right man then let them confirm it. I believe he deserves a chance but I am just a season ticket holding saints fan, I am not the expert, let the experts decide but Rupert is no expert!!.
As for Michael Wilde, he knows nothing more than anyone else like me who watches Saints every week. He lied to get rid of Rupert, he appointed a team of Executives who bled the club dry, tried to sell it on the cheap and who seemed to actually enjoy the demise of the saints. He never put a penny in to the club despite his promises. I do not think he has any credibility whatsoever so he should have absolutely no say in the appointment of the manager or anything else related to saints other than the dividends his shares might one day generate.
If Lowe and Wilde were ever in doubt about the passion we all feel for saints then the support during the Sheff Utd game and the scenes folowing the final whistle must surley be a pretty clear indication. Rupert , you saw it with your own eyes!! Michael, I assume someone showed you pictures!!! Please Gentlemen, do not mess with our club, do not mess with our feelings. It is a disgrace that once again you feel supporters no longer matter despite your appeals for support (our money). The fact that during this critical period the only note on the website is that Chris Makin now supports Man Utd sums up for me your lack of respect for supporters desperate for news on developments.!! They say Leopards never change etc,, I pray you two have changed but I am not holding my breath.

I think NP has done a great job and you could see him kicking every ball and pulling the team along by the short and curlys - however, in order to oull in investment you need to sell the dream of a return to the prem. If i had the millions to spend id want a more experianced safer pair of hands involved, even in a director of football type role and i think thats what Lowe could go for. Lets be fair to lowe - he gave us a new stadium and finacial stability for a long time. His vision was to lift the club to a different level by using sports science and world beaters such as Clive Woodward - from what i know Redknapp was the key reason that set up failed. Lowe has had his fingers burnt over mangement selection too many time to take another risk now, nor does he want to upset the fans from the start. I think what is key is that we are all behind the club, including the Board and pray...lots !!!

Ever since the Lowe-Wilde axis swung back into town I have been filled with dread.
The outcome of the meeting with Nigel Pearson will give some indication. really only the first, of what they see as the immediate future for the Club.
We have a manger with relatively little experience but a track record here of sorting out a mess left by an ineffective drinker who failed to motivate (well done the Scottish FA... and thanks again!).
At least Nigel gave the younger players a chance, he saw the glaring weaknesses in goal and central defence and did something about it.
If the two jokers now in charge cannot see that then I am afraid the fat lady needs to start singing again.

I dont think we need to worry about Lowe he will not be in charge for long.... The Club is about to be bought a firm offer is on the table today. Lowe and Wilde are only back to make sure they and their proxy share holders have an input to the final deal. The Club will be under new stewardship at the start of the new season. Lets start to look forward to a new beginning at St Marys and lets look forward to sweeping all of the present useless idiots away from our great club.

Of all those players listed who are out of contract...including the 2 who have already retired! I would only try and keep Dyer. He has pace and I'm sure Pearson can nurture and get the best out of him.
The rest are a waste of space...Licka might be worth a punt again if he is cheap but the rest will free up space for some of our youngsters to come through the ranks. We still need a decent right back so that would be an area to strengthen and we could do with some more experienced central midfielders...someon
e who can pass and control the tempo of a game.
We need a team that can slow a game down when we are winning and raise the tempo when we are chasing a game. How many goals have we conceaded so soon after scoring ourselves!
Lancashire and Davies will be a great centreback partnership...but I hope we can get Wright back in goal for the whole season!

The reports in the Mirror about Big Sam being Lowe's number 1 in my opinion would be a mistake. He would only use us a stepping stone if he did take us on, as he is settled up north. Pearson however, could be a manager we could have for a long time...I for one would be proud if we stuck by him and he made his name as a manager with us rather than a manager who already has had success in management. Sam was successful but had a large team of people working with him so it is not a foregone conclusion that he will be successful with Saints.

It will also be interesting to see what happens to Rasiak and Rudi... to be honest i hope they both go as clearly there chances of playing in euro 08 was a bigger priority to them than keeping Saints up!... As for those out of contract - keep Dyer and let the others go. I like Idiakez, but i think we need a fresh higher paced midfield to push us forward this year...

yup that's right allsaintsnocurves. allardyce would continue the destructive trend of hopping on the sfc managerial moneygoround for a season or so. pearson needs a 4-year contract with a brief to make the playoffs inside two seasons. that may seem a long way off, but that is our reality given that we only just evaded dropping into the abyss... money spent on fat sam's salary would be better invested in a quality, creative midfielder

In all seriousness, can we afford [italic]italic[/italic] not[italic]italic[/italic] to keep Pearson? Who else, with any accumen or credibility, is likely to be brought in on our budget?
Also, I wonder how much Lowe and Wilde will be paying themselves during this financial crisis. Considering they have both played a huge part in causing our money problems and are both independently wealthy, if they are serious about protecting their investment and getting the club back on track, perhaps they should waive their salaries?

So who would people keep out of those that are out of contract?
Personally i would say, Wright, Licka, and Gillett.. as long as they are all on pretty cheap wages, and are squad players..
Wright and Licka are quite versatile so are good backup.. (never thought i would have wanted to keep Wright after the first half of the season..)
oh and Gillett is 23 now.. but i think he can step up from the reserves, always stood out in the games i saw of him.

[bold]Lowe has had his fingers burnt over mangement selection too many time to take another risk now, nor does he want to upset the fans from the start. I think what is key is that we are all behind the club, including the Board and pray...lots !!![/bold]
I'm not a Saints fan, but my wife and sons are season ticket holders. Lowe coming back is a worrying turn of events. Straight away we hear about 'tightening belts'. might I make a suggestion? Reduce the bill spent on Director Hospitality. Car share to the away games, like the real fans have to. Pearson is the best thing to happen to So'ton in a long time. He has a no-nonsense approach to the game that strips everything back to basic effort. While he has been in charge, Saints have made the effort to go for the 50/50 balls that they wouldn't have bothered with before. They run around the field for 90 minutes, unlike before. My worry is that Lowe won't be worried about upsetting fans if he wants a new man in charge(and I'm 90% certain that he does). I have no idea why Mr Lowe is still involved in the club. His passion is totally under-whelming. We work hard to pay for the tickets so my family can watch the club they love. Add to that the bill for merchandise (a whole new range of strips out in a few weeks, I bet my boys will want to be up to date!)and the match day experience (programmes/ food/ drink/ visit to the shop)and my annual handover to the club is massive. I'm lucky, i cn afford it, but I start to resent it when the top level of the club treat their fans with such contempt. If you want the support of the fans, earn it. Show some commitment, instead of just skimming the club all the time. Thet goings on since your day of glory in Cardiff, which was ONLY 5 YEARS AGO havve made you a laughing stock. Lowe pulling out his EGM card, so close to the end of the season had the potential to tilt the club off its fragile axis at a time when the club needed solidarity. That's how much Mr Lowe cares about your club. The passion of the everyday fan has never been in doubt. The long car journeys home every 2 weeks were an abyss of misery at times. It's time the people at the top started to mirror this passion.

Firstly SMS will be sold to Pompey (for use as their training ground) bringing in money for players, and Saints will move to the recreation park in Millbrook which has 2 advantages, it has the capacity for the numbe of true scum fans (about 70) and also stinks to high heaven so the scum fans will feel at home in the milbbrook cespit and cowardly environment
LOL LOL LOL What an idiot.Pompey struggled to sell 17,5000 tickets for most of their home games last season in their best season for 50 years. We averaged about 23,000 in our worst season for 50 years. You only had 3,000 at Notarf Krap to greet your heroes home the other night. What a pathetic tiny club you are with a load of jcl mockney worzel supporters. AN ABSOLUTE JOKE!
As shown on Sky Sports news over the last few days. Skates average attendance - 17,200. Saints average attendance 21,700. Says a lot i think!
Mike and Costa Mike, if your figures are correct, and you also have a magnificent stadium, that when not used for football, is hired out for conferences and other events. You had a \'mega\' shop, when Pompey were operating out of a small shop. You have had academy status for a number of years, even before Pompey went into administration. With all of these benefits stacked up in Saints favour, how come that Portsmouth finished the season 8th in the Premier League and won the FA Cup, and Saints, with all the aforementioned benefits, narrowly avoided relegation to Division 1? As Costa Mike would say, \'AN ABSOLUTE JOKE!\' and Mike would say, \'SAYS A LOT I THINK!\'

The fact is that Lowe is in power, and Wilde is his puppet, so we should all accept that and get behind the team.
Let's fill out the magnificient stadium, which we all owe thanks to Rupert Lowe, every week.
I for on back his policy on the academy, i just hopethat the 1st team will com first in financial matters. We want to be able to break in good home grown players for decent money without buying in over-payed journeymen. We want loyalty and stability.

You seem to want Blind Obedience. Let's all carry on paying out, and hope that things get better. We'll go down, but at least we'll go down TOGETHER. Do you really think that anyone with money is going to invest in a club with a track record for hiring and firing that Lowe has, while he is in charge??? Pearson kicked some behinds at the end of last season, and got players interested in playing again. My wife thought long and hard before putting her hand in my wallet to renew tickets. The club has to give some return. Too many times in recent years the team has put in a markedly sub-standard performance. Successive boards have been a source of ridicule, and have made you a laughing stock.
The line about trying out the 'home grown' lads smacks of penny pinching. Send out boys against men, and it will be another nail biting season, for all the wrong reasons. You need to have a balance between youth and experience. And to get any sort of quality, you need to put SOME money into buying players.
Oh, and as for thanking Lowe for the stadium, I agree, it is magnificent. I've spent MANY afternoons and evenings there. Hopefully you won't end up with the finest stadium in League one. I remember being told that you were virtually debt free when it was first built, but it suddenly became a mill stone when the true figures were announced. Add up the transfer fees of everyone you've sold since you went down. Where has all this money gone?
