Superclub will bring 80 extra jobs
ONE of Britain's biggest
nightclubs, Oceana, which
opens in Southampton
later this month, will create
80 more jobs than first
expected, taking the total
number of staff to 200.
A staggering 4,000 clubbers - the
largest capacity in the country,
according to the club's owners
Luminar Group - will party under
one roof at the £7m venue when it
opens at LeisureWorld on July 17.
Boasting five themed bars and
three nightclubs under one roof, as
well as Europe's largest dance floor,
Oceana Southampton will replace
the existing clubs Ikon and Diva. It is
hoped the new venue will attract an
older clientele and help improve
LeisureWorld's reputation among
city centre residents.
The superclub was to remain open
until 4.30am, but Southampton
police demanded that last drinks
were served by 3am and the premises
shut at 3.30am.

It's the largest of 13 such developments
in the UK by Luminar,
Britian's largest nightclub operator.
The jobs on offer range from 50
positions as door staff and security
to 130 glass collectors, bar staff, promotional
teams, cellar staff and
spotters, who are charged with
selecting the best dressed people in
the queue for VIP treatment.
There are also ten management
positions available.
Luminar general manager Bill
Dearsley said the club would employ
130 people directly and then have
more than 70 contract staff.
He said: "This is no back street bar.
It's a big venue.
"Oceanas all over the country have
all done very well. This is the largest
and we have high hopes for it."

Sorry, I fail to see how building yet another nightclub in place of existing ones is going to improve the reputation of the area. It'll be the same clientele going as before, except now there's room for more of them. Oh yeh, you [bold]say[/bold] you're hoping for an older customer base, but will it actually happen? I doubt it, and even if it does, what do you think the previous, younger lot are going to do? Stay in? Nah, I'm not buying it

The club is divided into different rooms, which all have different minimum age restrictions, 18+, 20+ and 25+ so for those who want to escape the youth they can. That's how.

What sort of door is it, that needs that number of people to "work" it? Surely it's just a matter of opening and closing it

Talking to a cabbie yesterday he was quite happy to finish work at midnight as I'm sure many of his colleagues would be. Sadly for as long as people act like nobs there will always be a shortage of taxis.

It is announced the amount of employees employed, but after the construction and the interior made to requirements, what happens to those employees - are they all agency workers? do they go back on the dole? Are the workforce made up of students, pretty gals and temporary staff, and then on with the next load of basic pay workers? What a messy sub standard employment. The employed and unemployed must be lost in an undefinable stew.
