Man seriously hurt as crash kills two Hampshire friends

A SOUTHAMPTON man remains in a serious condition in hospital following a horrific motorway pile-up that claimed the lives of two Hampshire women.

Friends Zoe West, 34, and Victoria Pickering, 27, who were both from Gosport, died following the smash on the M6 in Lancashire in the early hours of Friday morning.

Southampton man John Angus Marr, 71, who was in a separate car, sustained severe arm injuries.

He is now in a stable condition in the Royal Preston Hospital.

Victoria Pickering, a passenger in a red Ford Escort, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened on the M6 in Broughton at 1.10am yesterday.

Zoe West, who was driving the Escort, suffered severe brain injuries and was rushed by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital.

She lost her fight for life in the early hours of this morning.

All three Hampshire residents had to be cut out of their cars by firefighters using special cutting equipment.

The motorway smash - which happened on the northbound carriageway and led to the busy road being closed for nearly seven hours - involved two cars, a lorry and a van.

Police have said they believe a Mercedes Sprinter van hit the back of the lorry, followed by the Vauxhall Astra driven by Mr Marr and the Escort.

The 61-year-old driver of the lorry suffered whiplash in the accident and is now recovering at home. The driver of the Mercedes van sustained minor injuries.

A very tragic accident.

I worked with Zoë and Vicky. They both enjoyed having a laugh and spending their time training/showing dogs.

My thoughts go out to their families and also to John Marr and his family.

God bless and Rest In Peace.

Please don't let this happen to you - leave a safe gap in front of you when driving, especially at night when you are tired.

We can only guess at the circumstances of this accident but generally this sort of accident is due to drivers not being prepared for the sudden braking of a vehicle in front of them.

ONLY A FOOL BREAKS THE TWO SECOND RULE!!

As a friend and workmate of Zoe's I have been trying to make sense of this since being informed this afternoon. I can't.
My heart goes out to the families of Zoe and Vicky, who I also knew, and I wish Mr Marr a full recovery.
Zoe...I'll miss you so much mate.

I never knew Zoe, but I do know her Dad, I feel so sad for the loss of both ladies, and no matter what happened there is such a lot of sorrow. I have been overwhelmed with the lovely comments I have heard in the prison where Zoe's Dad works. She was very well thought of and loved by many. My prayers and love go out to all those close to both Zoe and Vicky
Rest in peace Angels

Vicky was a wonderful person and cousin. She was so full of life but was also a very sensible girl. I have a lot of nice memories of us as children when we used to go up to Scotland to visit the whole family after they moved up there from Colne. I'm still struggling to accept that it is true *cries*
I want to say more but i just can't begin to explain how i feel right now. Our whole family is heartbroken :o(

Zoe and Vicky were special people. I can only ever remember the laughter and smiles and excitement they always created when you were around them both. I will miss them terribly, but will keep those special memories with me. This ending is too tragic for words and my heart felt sympathy goes out to both of their very close families and friends. Two stars that will shine in all our hearts. You wont be forgotten.

Missing you so much vicky, still can't believe your gone. from the moment we met i knew in my heart you would always be there for me. The time we had together was the best of my life, all the hard times we had both suffered in the past,i finally felt complete and i know in my heart we were both truely happy. Times we would lay in eachothers arms and talk about the future and spending the rest of our lives together.
I wish i could turn back time so i could hold you close and never let you go. I will always love you with all my heart. xxx
