The price of school meals to go up

THE price of Southampton's school dinners for secondary pupils has gone up by 10p while the cost has been frozen at primary schools.

City Catering - the city council's in-house catering service - has kept the price of primary meals at £1.70 but they are to go up to £1.80 at secondary schools for the larger portion sizes.

Councillor Peter Baillie, Southampton's Cabinet member for children's services, said: "With the cost of living on the increase, we know that many families are feeling the pinch and reassessing their budgets.

"What we don't want them to do is substitute their child's healthy school dinner with cheaper and less nutritious alternatives.

"By keeping our prices affordable, we hope that even more parents will consider allowing their child to have a school dinner."

The DMR (Daily messing rate) for the army in 2007 was 1.51 sterling per day (three meals) - why so dear for schools ? Both use private caterers.

Given some of the food on offer kids would be better off eating from the chippy as we all did years go. £1.70 would get you a fishcake and chips, job done.

The chip shop is such a rip off. 90p or more for a fishcake? those things only cost 6p each to buy through trade.
