Safri heading out of St Mary's
 |
| YOUSSEF SAFRI |
SAINTS midfielder Youssef Safri was today expected to complete his shock transfer to Qatar Sports Club.
The 31-year-old was unveiled as a Qatar player on the club's official website yesterday with pictures of him wearing a yellow and black club scarf.
Qatar SC, who play in the Qatari League in the Middle East country, claim that Safri has joined them on a three-year contract.
But the revelation took Saints by surprise, and a club spokesman told the Echo last night: "No deal has been formally completed yet."
The Echo understands, though, that the transfer should be completed today.
Safri joined Saints for £250,000 from Norwich last August on a two-year contract. He played 37 Championship games in 2007/08, and the only games he missed were due to two suspensions for red cards against Bristol City and QPR and through playing for Morocco in the African Cup of Nations.
He is the sixth senior pro to leave St Mary's in a few days following the release last week of Alex Ostlund, Darren Powell, Inigo Idiakez, Jermaine Wright and Mario Licka.
Though Safri was Saints' main defensive midfielder last season, new head coach Jan Poortvliet has already signed two players who can play in that position. One is the highly-experienced former Plymouth favourite Paul Wotton and the other 18-year-old Frenchman Morgan Schneiderlin.
Saints begin their pre-season friendly programme at Southern League Premier newcomers Farnborough FC tomorrow evening.
For more Saints news don't miss today's Daily Echo.

Can't say I'm too disappointed, although he put in some good performances he was prone to passing sideways and unlike Wotton was rubbish in front of goal. At 31 a move to Qatar is probably a good one as he'll earn a lot more than he would over here. Let's hope Viafara goes next.

No great loss that safri is going in my opinion. He wasn't very influential, and always seemed to pass sideways or backwards. Save a bit on the wage bill. Will be interesting to see who else goes over the next few weeks before the season starts.....COYR

I can't understand the anti Safri feeling here. Passing sideways or back is okay as long as there isn't better options available and that you pass to your own team, Safri usually took the best option and nearly always passed to his own team mate, Rasiak, Euell, Licka and a few others would do well to try and do the same.

I'm not anti-Safri, I'm pro-Saints. If we need to reduce the wage bill to stay out of trouble it's a win win situation if a player can move on for a bigger deal than we could offer anyway. As for Euell and Rasiak, I'd never be suprised if they were moved on too.

Fact remains, our squad is weaker than it was at the close of the season. We all know the reasons, but Safri leaving is disappointing, but not unexpected.
Viafara, Surman, Stern John, Skacel and probably Rasiak are next. We'll be left with a squad of around 20 pros. That's just not enough.

Safri & Viafara were the best 2 midfielders we had and if they were played as a centre mid pairing for all of last season we would have been up there challenging!
If anyone thinks Wotton and the kids are the answer in the Championship then they have a big wake up call comming.
As for you Condor Man well at least we will still have some humour!

It would seem that Burley enticed players to the club with big wages- ok when we had the parachute payments but a disaster now. Clearly Safri's been offered better terms in Qatar and for him it's a good move as he reaches the end of his career.
As for the Saints we have to be realistic and have a squad we can afford to pay.

Safri will be no great loss as far as I can see - possibly our most uninteresting and unimaginative player since Matt Oakley. Great if you're George Burley and like to see lots of short passes going nowhere in particular, but I think we can probably do without that next season.

I would think that along with Euell, Rasiak, Skacel and Viafara he's a top earner. Good to offload him. Wotton will be a more versatile option and it's about time Lloyd James was tested. Morgan S may also be good but we'll have to see how strong he is in this league. We have plenty of options here, any idea if a few FB's are coming. I've noticed the absence of Dutch players and most foreign managers bring countrymen in. Any rumours of players following from Helmond?

I am surprised at the amount of emotion being generated by Safri going. Firstly it is not a surprise, and secondly I am happy with a) we are saving money and b) the two players brought in can more than compensate. We allknow that Safri had problems with Norwich and I don't think that he ver gave more than 75% to Saints. Time to move on folks, with probably two or three more high earners moving out in the next two weeks, hopefully with at least two coming in. My gut says Stern John and Viafara going, and hopefully a couple of full backs coming in, although I would not mind taking a chance on Jake Thomsom at right back. Saints Forever.

We really will be in a state if signing players from Helmond, a semi-pro team, is what we resort to. Might as well sign players from Bashley or Eastleigh, they'll be of the same standard.

I can see that we will go places this season.

Yeah real shock about this news...I heard he was leaving for weeks! This is just Lowe sugar coating the fact that they wanted him and needed him to leave. Saints don't need him now they have enough cover in his position and he's probably one of the higher earners at the club.

Population of Holland is about 16m compared to 60m in the UK. So a much much smaller pool of players and I think you'll find the Dutch 2nd Division is a low standard and on a par with the old 4th division/Conference and those clubs have crowds of a similar size and financially are semi-professional.

What a shocking way for a football club to go about their business, fancy announcing this as a done deal when contracts haven't even been signed, how totally unprofessional.

The irony of Lowe's comment on the Saints website wasn't wasted on me...apparently he was surprised to see Safri unveiled by his new team as the deal has not yet been finalised!! I can't imagine Lowe doing anything like that..unveiling someone at the club when he has not yet been released by his current team...nah...can't see it, he's too good for that!!

Club are saying Safri's going for 400k euros. That's £318k. So a small profit on what we signed him for.
Will that money be used to buy more players? Or will it just disappear and help fund Lowe & Cowen's wages?

And did anyone else see the story about Nicky Butt joining over the weekend?

Sad to see Safri go, I just hope we manage to hold on to some of our senior players. I really think we need to keep hold of Surman, A.Davies, Viafara, Skacel, Rasiak & Stern John.
Not sure how far off a take over is (or how much truth their is to the story), but if it's gonna happen it had better had quick sharp so we can bring in some players & before our best players are sold off. If a take over did happen & Shearer was brought in I believe Jan & Mark should be kept on as coaches, as they're both on reasonably low wages.
Also did any one see the story in The Star yesterday about Kelvin Davis going to Ipswich this week? I really hope this is true, I know Ipswich fans actually rate Davis. Also says we're bringing in Spurs keeper Tommy Forecast, but I hope we bring in Richard Wright. Sounds like BS, but fingers crossed...

Jannersaint - By the look of things an inability to use a semi-colon is not something for which you will be derided on this blog. The mixture of cretins and dunderheads that usually post will be searching their word-a- day toilet paper just to find out what on earth a semi-colon is.

This transfer surprised me as out of all our senior players i thought he would be the least likely to go. I suppose with Schneiderlin and Wotton there would have been very little room for him

... any players arriving at Saints this summer will be worse than those that are leaving.
So how do you improve on a league position with a worse & smaller squad and a managerial team with no experience in this league where physical football is paramount?
As far as I can see, the Championship as a whole will be stronger next season than it was last season, but Saints are getting weaker.
Right now, before a ball is kicked, I have to come to the conclusion that it's likely we will be in a relegation fight from day one.
Can anyone give me strong reasons as to why we won't be?

So how do you improve on a league position with a worse & smaller squad and a managerial team with no experience in this league where physical football is paramount?
As far as I can see, the Championship as a whole will be stronger next season than it was last season, but Saints are getting weaker.
Right now, before a ball is kicked, I have to come to the conclusion that it's likely we will be in a relegation fight from day one.

[italic]italic[/italic]Sad to see Safri go, I just hope we manage to hold on to some of our senior players. I really think we need to keep hold of Surman, A.Davies, Viafara, Skacel, Rasiak & Stern John.
[italic]italic[/italic]
Sorry to disagree, I think Safri was OK but just a stopgap. Also, of that list, we could afford to lose Surman and John and still have a reasonable squad, provided we can afford to ikeep the rest.
And the idea of bringing in Richard Wright and selling Kelvin Davis to Ipswich is a really mouth-watering prospect.
Could do with a couple of full-backs, though (how about Chris Baird on a season-long loan?) and then we're ready to roll.

England has many strong leagues because of the size of the population. Holland has some very good teams in the top half of it's top division, but from then down, the standard drops off dramatically. They don't even have enough teams to have a 3rd division. The league that Helmond play in, although the "2nd division" is actually the bottom one of their professional/semi-pr

I'd say it's similar to Scotland. Would you say the Scottish First division is on a par with the English Championship? I wouldn't and neither is the Dutch.

Doesn't seem that we disagree then according to your last post. I suppose my point is there are good players at every level, even scottish first division that could benefit our squad.

The players that have stood out since 2005 have all been sold on- Walcott, Bale, Baird and Jones most notably.
If we are heading towards the abyss then it's time to change tack and develop a team that can win more games that it loses (especially at home) as that will keep us up.

correct me if I am wrong, but, I am fairly sure that Jim Magilton took over a struggling Ipswich side and took the brave step of blooding a lot of the youngsters who narrowly beat noneother than a Saints side in the FA youth cup... supplementing them with solid CCC players like Alan Lee.
It has seen gradual improvement over his time with them and while many of our younger players are still not getting games for us (and some left to seek regular games elsewhere) theirs are playing regularly and pushing Ipswich up the league.
I personally would much prefer us to get promoted over the next 2 or 3 seasons with mostly home-grown, young players than gamble on signing a load of old pros of questionable commitment in a glory or bust attempt at promotion this season.

Starting the season with keen, motivated management will be a breath of fresh air after the start of last year.
As for any new players being worse, not sure I agree. Of those that have left (so far) none have really impressed in their time here, reasonable players at best.

This is no shock Simon Carter (Daily Echo), we all know that Safri is one of five or six players on the transfer list, we have signed a couple of players for his position and we have recovered what we paid for him.

I wish people would stop moaning bout saints situation. Season not even started. The players that have gone were all rubbish, been replaced with positive signings, good to see a manager wanting to use our youngsters that have come through the academy that has had lots of money pumped into. If us fans start getting negative, how will this help the team.

safri today commented " I thought southampton were a well supported club but my time here has taught me otherwise. At least Im going to a big club with real fans, and also going to a beautiful city not a wasteland like southampton that i thought would have been repaired after WW2. Also the white feather is a bad omen to those of us from the east, and southampton fans it seems are recipients of huge amounts of white feathers, especially in millbrook and sholing"

Right now, before a ball is kicked, I have to come to the conclusion that it's likely we will be in a relegation fight from day one. Can anyone give me strong reasons as to why we won't be?
Unfortunately you are 100% correct I made a similar post last week and got slagged off and told I don't know anything about football. It is time these people stopped believing their heart and started to get realistic, unless money is found soon to buy championship standard players a very disappointing season is coming soon, be prepared for relegation.
