SAINTS have today completed the signing of Tottenham goalkeeper Tommy Forecast.

The 21-year-old Spurs reserve has joined the club on a five-year-deal for an undisclosed fee.

Forecast, who passed a medical yesterday, took part in his first training session at Saints' Staplewood complex this morning.

"I am really pleased it is all sorted," said the six-foot-four keeper. "I found out about Southampton's interest a couple of weeks ago and it has taken a while to sort out because Spurs did not really want to let me go.

"There were a few clubs interested in me but as soon as I found out Southampton wanted me, my mind was made up.

"They are a huge club with a big fan base - they are a Premiership club really and I feel I can go places with them. I can see myself progressing well here.

"I came down on Friday, sorted out terms and passed the medical and then joined in training today. It was a very good session and all the lads seem very positive which is what we need.

"There are a lot of good young players here and I have been very impressed by what I have seen so far. I am delighted to be here."

This means Davis is off & Richard Wright is not coming (we can't afford his wages).

No nothing about this keeper, but how on earth can we afford to give anyone a 5 year contract ?! Obviously the only way we could persuade him to come (cue him saying "I'm joining because of Saints revolutionary coaching set-up).

As it's been said before today, those players arriving are not as good as the players leaving

Tommy Forecast - wow, what a gift for headline writers! Any idea why he left Spurs; was he unsettled or did he let in a shower of goals?
Hope he has a sunny spell at Saints anyway.

It says something when supporters of other sides say their 4th or 5th choice keeper is the best player you'll sign for a long time!

However, if he's keen and makes the effort, these young unproven players could just help create a team atmosphere....

After all, how many times last season did we long for players that would put the effort in?

Blimey, must stop there that was a bit positive.......

Why are people so quick to be negative. It is not a case of players coming in who are better than those leaving. It is a case of putting trust in youth and potential over the proven abilities of senior players, the same senior players that were unable to get us up and even gave us our worst finish in decades!!!
I for one welcome the changes. Without investment we can only do one of three things.
1. Stick with the same squad and hope to get promotion to pay their wages.
2. bring in loan players and hope we get promotion to pay their wages.
3. Develop youth and blend with experience. If we go up then we keep our best talent and let them have a crack at Premier League survival OR if we misss out on promotion we sell a couple to pay the bills.

I am totally in support of option 3!!!!!

Forecast is 6ft 6inches tall, a great prospect who is one of 6 keepers at Tottenham who have already announced they are trying to buy a big name keeper so Forecasts chances are slim at Spurs. A 5 year deal gives Saints a great bargaining position if he fulfills his potential with us. By the way, his strength is in collecting high balls and he has a massive kick. I think they are both strengths lacking in KD and the reason for needing Richard Wright at the end of the season.

I really think it is time everyone got behind the club, they are trying to build a better future without the investment that some other clubs can enjoy. We would all like to see someone invest millions in saints but unless that happens we should at least be supportive of our new team and a new direction which will hopefully be up and up.
We have a new coaching regime, new young and exciting players mixing with some very experienced players and of course we have Andrew Davies as skipper. Reasons to be cheerful.

Midfield play is not only about passing, it is also about breaking up the oppositions game before it gets to your defence. i think Safri did okay compared to most of the others. As for the forecasts on Forecast, I have several mates who support Spurs who are gutted, he is highly rated,Spurs were not keen to let him go but he wants a chance at first team football. Isn't prepared to wait any longer. Forecast good buy

its a good job GB didnt sign him...he'd be playing at right back for most of the season if he had

Mmmmm, here, there, everwhere says...
1:25pm Mon 7 Jul 08

I like Kelvin but he is shocking on crosses and prone to errors (can you imagine having to play the Blades in the last game with Kelvin in goal... I think I would have need urgent medical attention for the stress) this lad at 6 foot 4 should have no problem claiming everything that comes his way and he'll certainly fill the goal which will give him a mental edge over strikers in 1 on 1's.

If we are to sell Kelvin then it's a very bold decision but I think I had accepted that if we want to improve then a new keeper is vital and this lad sounds like an encouraging signing.

I can't wait to see who we sign next, I didn't see any of the summer signings coming so far (Perry excepted) and it's quite exciting

Condor Man, Southampton says...
1:32pm Mon 7 Jul 08

Richard Wright aside we've not had a decent goalie since David Coles left- he was the making of Niemi and Paul Smith. Bialkowski was ok, Poke is a lower division player and Davis was too much like Paul Jones for my liking. I'd imagine 2 keepers will be off, Rondos went last week.

John, Southampton says...
1:40pm Mon 7 Jul 08

Don't get to excited from what I can see it's one in and one out and by the looks of it that is not Kelvin Davies its Michael Poke, looks like he is off to Torquay. However let's hope forecast is as good as the spurs faithful are saying. However what about Bartosz Bialkowski? where does ho fit in with all of this because again young and a very good keeper, but was unable to play due to injury tail end of last season hense Richard Wright. COUR's!!!

Linda, kings somborne says...
1:42pm Mon 7 Jul 08

Well i wont be surprised to see Kelvin go , but it is worrying to see some strong players depart .I highly rated Jermaine and i for one was really sorry to see him go , we need a bit of beef , and i rated Safri .
I shall be sat in my seat ? well new seat since having to move just willing our lads on and hope for better things .
It wont help to stay away as without full gates we wont get far , and if the stay aways could turn up for that last game lifting the team why can they not do the same this coming season . Born a Scummer die a scummer

If Spurs didn't want him to go, why didn't they loan him to Saints for the season??

Wouldn't that have been a win-win for both teams? Spurs see if he can cut it in a first team and Saints get a keeper without having to make a long term contract commitment?

I think we are allowed up to 5 loan signings playing at once, so I can't see us getting that many in.

Looks like to me, that Spurs had Saints by the short and curlies as we had to get a keeper in quick because one or maybe two are leaving (Davis & Poke) this week.

Quotes so far from Spurs fans on 606:

"No great loss"
"Saw him play against Chavs reserves conceded three and should have been sent off , By the way Clive Allen was shouting at him I'm not too surprised he's gone"
"No great loss though"
"I'm not surprised he's gone either. He was never good enough and had been overtaken in the pecking order by Button who is definitely a better keeper than Forecast."
"Was never gonna be good enough for us. Good luck to him though."

Hopefully they don't know what they're talking about (well, they are North London yobbos, aren't they Rupes?)

However, He's ours now so how about giving him an even break.

Our Management are not hunting round the countryside looking for 3rd rate players to replace 2nd rate players.

Please, oh please, lets see what happens before we get all tired and emotional.

Welcome to the Club, Tommy. Do the business where it counts.

This site has changed remarkably over the last 1/2 weeks with all the interesting signings and it is VERY noticeable that the negatives are keeping their powder dry or perhaps beginning to sense that something quite good - for once - might just be happening.

My optimism rating has crept up from 40% to about 50% but still a long way to go.

"The negatives are keeping their powder dry" – are you sure? If this is this site at its most optimistic it is a very sad reflection on the fans who post here.

Sadly though you're right, 70% negative comments is probably an improvement on past weeks.

How anyone can say we're replacing players who are leaving with worse is beyond me – is any Saints fan honestly suggesting they've seen these new players play more than one or two games at the very most?

Give them a chance. Not one game like Bennett last season, but a chance to bed down, get used to the pace (especially the young players) and don't expect too much too soon.

Safri is no great loss. Decent passer prone to using his aggression to get sent off rather than inspiring his team. Previous record suggests he's never been a great team man either.

Looking forward to all the goals that our open attacking football will bring to SM. Unfortunatley the lack of a recognised forst team keeper, left back, or right back makes me think we will be the team conceeding them.

Indeed. If in doubt, let's look back to the good old days and feel sorry for ourselves - a sure fire recipe for future success.

It's a shame we didn't have you instead of Churchill during WW2, when you might have inspired us with stories of how great it was when we weren't under threat of invasion and bemoaned Hitler's success as unfair.

Slightly unfair to compare Pompey to Nazi Germany, but you know what I mean.

With your positive attitude you are really spoiling us Mr Ambassador.

If you look on the Saints website, this is part of the Gareth Bale deal and we have chosen to take a smaller amount of money and Forecast instead of waiting longer for the bigger installment, which we need now to strengthen the club financially.

...so this doesnt mean that Kelvin or Bartosz is leaving, it just means weve got a bit more money and a good young keeper! I think we have made some decent signings so far and I am looking forward to next season. I'm far from over optimistic but I think we just need to get the fans behind the club and the new regime...otherwise we're going nowhere!

Still four or five to go and at least three to come in, especially a fullback.
Once we have trimmed the squad we must return to a transfer policy established by Ted Bates and Lawre Mac, of only bringing in players who are better than we currently have. Only then will we progress.

Interesting acquisition. People will probably go "who" as I have done, however, we have always been a club who unearth talent, give them a chance and they usually shine through i.e. beattie, flowers, dodd, crouch, niemi. He has a good height so I think we need to get behind him and who knows, we may have unearthed a gem......It does though put a question mark exactly over the list of players that will be going - my bet are the following will go before the season starts

davis, rasiak, viafara, surman, euell....

Only 1 or 2 I would be sad to see go.....I just hope that this board know what they are doing.....

Crouch going to the Skates will net us 500K and Safri is going to the mercenary Qatar club to make some real money and will net us about £275K, hopefully this will be invested in defenders on loan deals or good young players as we only have 4 in the squad and of those only 3 are experienced 1st team players, Lancashire has not even played 1st team for us yet!.

Can't see the logic in getting another keeper and this surely means the end for either Davis,Bart or Poke.

Was infurated to see that we cut Spurs slack to re-negotiate the Gareth Bale deal as we would have gained more by waiting as they still owe us £5M, surely its crazy for Rupert to say this was a good deal as im sure Forecast is not even worth half this fee as he was only 4th choice at Spurs.

so safri out, and forecast in! i wouldn't have predicted that! firstly i'm a sad to see safri go. i've seen a lot of comments on here saying that its no big loss but i see it differently. he was one of our best players last season. he worked hard, got his tackles in and he kept the ball (even if it was with sideways or backwards passes, as alan hansen says "posession is king" and he kept the ball well). i guess he was another player on high wages who the club felt had to leave. secondly i agree we needed a keeper but at this level i think an experienced keeper would of been the better option as you have to deal with a lot of crosses and long balls in the championship and it can be quite daunting for a young keeper. however i've never seen this tommy forecast play so i cant comment on his ability.
thirdly (and this point will tie in with the first two) i cab see this whole "youth revolution" being a "sink or swim" situation. it'll either go really well or really bad. i like that saints want to use youth but i think you still need experience and letting your experienced captain go to qatar for me is sending out the wrong signals the same with bringing in a young and largely untested keeper. but we'll have to see what happens through the rest of pre-season, maybe theres a few more suprise transfers in the pipeline???

Some people would say that knocking off young girls in Thailand is not really called business. They would be hoping that you were promoting this GREAT COUNTRY not degrading it.
More like Ladyboys, that's what skates do best.Bet Crew 657 has got all Gary Glitter's records too.

Crouch didn't allow Arsenal to pay early. It was reported that Saints were going to approach Arsenal to ask for an early payment on Walcott, Crouch denied this and then afew weeks later he went cap in hand to ask for some money. In return for this early payment Crouch agreed to wipe off 2 - 3 million from the transfer deal Lowe negotiated for Walcott.
