Forecast is part of early Bale settlement
 |
| Tommy Forecast |
SAINTS have announced the signing of Tottenham goalkeeper Tommy Forecast was part of an early settlement for the deal that saw Gareth Bale move to White Hart Lane.
Spurs agreed to pay £5m up front and a further £5m depending on appearances and league position for the Welsh left back last summer.
However, Saints have decided to forfeit some of that second payment for an early cash settlement, as well as the signature of 21-year-old Forecast.
The club agreed a similar deal with Arsenal last season over the final payments of the Theo Walcott transfer.
PLC chairman Rupert Lowe said: "Over the past two years the club finances have deteriorated markedly as a result of the excess of expenditure over income.
"To some extent this has been mitigated by the sale of young players including Gareth Bale, Kenwyne Jones and Chris Baird - not to mention cashing in the further payments for Theo
Walcott.
"I am always reluctant to forego any future income but given our current situation, we must do all we can to go into the new season as robustly as possible.
"I believe in long-term planning through developing good young players. Despite the sacrifice of this valuable income stream which may or may not become due in the future, this deal ticks both boxes."

RL just keeps coming out with the same old "tosh". I have never heard of one person who knows very little about one subject, yet talks like he is the "gedi" on the subject!!! RL thanks for killing our football club!

When Crouch settled the Walcott deal early, Rupert was outraged. When he does the exact same thing about Bale's it ticks all boxes?
By the way, what is Lowe's "long term plan" for Saints? He's failed to tell either shareholders or supporters thus far.
Will he raise much needed capital by a rights issue so all the major shareholders can put their money where there mouths are and inject funds into the club ??
Will he actively seek external investment or a possible sale of the club ??
Will he just carry on being in charge, telling shareholders and fans nothing and entrench himself and his chums even deeper into the club making it near on impossible to remove them, no matter how bad they do??
Option 3 looks the most likely.

Can you also highlight the bit where Lowe says anything wrong? If we don't get some wonga from somewhere, we're in deep, deep doo-doo, Bales gone and if his going helps keep us going all the better. If Crouch had stayed in charge, spending money like it's going out of fashion, we could be out of business already.

There seems to be no definite plan here. Yet another keeper (4 now?) but still no dedicated right or left back.
I agree with the comments above. It was a crime when Crouch took a reduction in settlement in return for early cash from Arsenal, but it's ok when the current board do it from Spurs. The same spurs that Lowe called Yobbo's. How much of the settlement has the club let slip? @Some' is as vague as you get. Is it a little bit, or most of it?
This coming season is going to ber a huge gamble. If it works, great, I'll eat my hat. If it doesn't, how long before the club has to look at its tactic of fielding kids? My 9 year old is hungry for victory, and has enthusiasm for the game, but it doesn't mean I'd play him in the CCC.

I remember Crouch (earlier this year) having a meeting with the same bank and getting it's support for the next year. He must have outlined his plans to recoup and save money to get this support, otherwise the bank would have told him where to go! Therefore, I think people need to bear that in mind before slating him for being a poor chairman, just as they need to bear it in mind when promoting Lowe as the Messiah. As they say in the Life of Brian (apologies for any inaccuracy)"He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy":-)
Also, when Crouch took early settlement on the Walcott deal he was slaughtered by all and sundry, so with that in mind, it will be interesting to see what comments appear on this site with regards to Lowe foregoing some of the money owed on Bale.
Still, a very interesting signing, another player with things to prove, let's just hope he has the ability to go with his ambition. Did he actually make any first team appearances at Spurs?

seeing as RL is such a shrewed operator no doubt he would have seen to it that there was an attractive sell-on clause when he sold Peter Crouch to Liverpool in which case we should be getting a good wedge of cash when Pompey buy him back?? Would be nice to think that some of Pompey's cash would be coming to us - nice and clean so to speak!

I'd have thought you might have been interested in trying to keep him, as you seem to be a bit thin on the ground as far as defenders go (you have the same number of goalkeepers as you have defenders)

You're quite right. The myth about balancing youth with experience should be ignored. Good luck with your boys team next season. Still, if any of your defenders get injured, you can always get one of your 4 keepers to put on an outfield shirt. Nice to give a player a chance in a position he isn't used to. We'll call it radical, or exciting, and sell it to the muppets that believe every word we give them.

As I've said before, I'm a Brentford fan, and I know that if Webb or Noades came back to our club, even if they were the best option, a lot of us would be unable to forgive and forget. And I'm presuming that you know better than me about whether it's the same situation with Lowe, so I won't argue with you on that.
But this van Poortvliet, who is rated by every Dutch fan I have corresponded with about the issue (and how many Brits could claim a 14 out of 14 success rate) seems one of the most promising managers around. He's made some very good signings (Schneiderlin and Holmes particularly), shown he can deal with muppets (Dyer), hasn't come out with all sorts of bravado but instead concentrated on getting the best team he can, and dealt as well as possible with the severe financial constraints that he's working under.
So say Lowe out by all means, but I think these Dutch "clowns" may just turn your club round. I certainly hope so.

He's made some very good signings (Schneiderlin and Holmes particularly), shown he can deal with muppets (Dyer), hasn't come out with all sorts of bravado but instead concentrated on getting the best team he can, and dealt as well as possible with the severe financial constraints that he's working under. Obviously just too much to bear for the lunatic element who post on the site.

Getting a new young keeper is just what's needed. This is money well spent. At least the money has been used properly not used to pay the old players high wages. Look at the difference in the defence when we had the on loan keeper at the end of the season, he commanded the defence, gave them confidence. When Davies is in goal you always feel he will let goals in.

Why are we not just taking the money if we are so deperate. What is the point of a 4th goalkeeper I know we needed one at Hull when we only had an injured Poke and lost 5 nil but to my reckoning we now have 4 1st team keepers plus the youngsters at least 6 central defenders, we started last year with none, no full backs, mixed midfield and a collection of slow strikers. Is this the great plan then?

read the previous post from threestands. it is a variation on what he wrote. At the moment, saints are as likely to go down as thay are to go up, even more so with 4 keepers and 4 defenders. Only 1 keeper on hte field at any one time.

Rupert Lowe, it is sad when you keep coming out with the same pr language to suit your ego ride!
Bottom line is you should learn a lesson here first! Get the whole money up front, when a so called big club wants to rob us of a player.

On another note! I was just thinking about our new grey away kit. Remember when we beat Man U 3-1 at home with a Dave Merrington Saints Team. The following copy pasted from the Telegraph......will we ever win an away game this season!!!
United changed their away strip at half-time, grey giving way to blue and white, which Alex Ferguson said afterwards was due to difficulty in picking out colleagues against the background of the crowd rather than superstition - They have never won in grey.
"The players prefer blue and white, so do I," Ferguson added, moving on before anyone could inquire why a strip so unsuitable for football had ever become part of a football team's equipment.
Makes me laugh...I may post this again elsewhere on this site.

seeing as RL is such a shrewed operator no doubt he would have seen to it that there was an attractive sell-on clause when he sold Peter Crouch to Liverpool in which case we should be getting a good wedge of cash when Pompey buy him back?? Would be nice to think that some of Pompey's cash would be coming to us - nice and clean so to speak! [/quote] You must be delighted that your club may possibly benefit with a cash injection from your wealthy neighbours. I am certain that all Pompey fans will be happy to know that a bit of our cash will be going to help keep our struggling neighbours afloat.

So we have now effectively sold both Bale and Walcott too cheaply. When will RL & co learn to maximise players values by; first, keeping them unitl they are at least 21 and second, demanding their full value up front.
