Viafara future in doubt after friendly misery

SAINTS head coach Jan Poortvliet plans to hold vital talks with Jhon Viafara today to discuss the player's future at the club.

Viafara made his first appearance of pre-season in the 3-2 win at Weymouth last night.

But the Colombian was hauled off after just 28 minutes with Poortvliet saying he was disappointed with his start to the game, in which he conceded a ninth minute penalty, and the fact he reacted to a decision going against him by kicking the ball into the crowd.

The Dutchman said Viafara has already told him that he is currently unsettled at St Mary's due to family reasons. He admitted that could have played a part in the 29-year-old's performance against the Blue Square Conference outfit.

Explaining the decision to substitute Viafara, Poortvliet said: "I was disappointed. Very disappointed.

"Jhon was not really concentrated and he was not involved with the game.

"I saw the warm up and I was not happy by the warm up. I took him off because he made some big mistakes - he gave the penalty away - but he also made a big mistake when he lost concentration and he put the ball away (into the crowd) like you don't have to do in a friendly game.

"It was not honest to do that."

Poortvliet added: "I spoke to him last Saturday and a big problem is he is missing his family and he is having a sad time here.

"That can be a problem. Your family is not here and you feel you are alone. That can be a problem.

"But in football we need players who are involved with what we want to do."

How many other championship sides could field three current international in their reserves (Viafara, Skacel, Saga)? Nobody could deny that Jhon was a fully commited and energetic member of a struggling team last season. So a little respect? I think he looked at his best when he first came into the side as a deep defensive midfielder playing just in front of the back four, a bit like Carlton Palmer did for a season. After a few cames he has never played there again. It will be a long hard season, and many of our opponents will lump the ball into our penalty area and hope for the legendary 'second ball'I doubt if our Dutchment have any idea how 'basic' much of our oposition will be, or how effective playing that way in our league often is.

What personal problems? I can't see that any personal 'problems' have been revealed. It is possible that his family are away looking after an ill relative. It is possible that there is a marriage break-up. It is possible that his wife does not want to live here. There are a multitude of reasons, but NOTHING has been revealed. To offer a reason for him being unsettled is professional, otherwise muppets from Redbridge will want to crucify him for a lack-lustre performance.

Oh please spare me this rubbish!!! Many people in a variety of jobs travel abroad to work for financial and career reasons. Missing the family is a price to be paid if someone decides to become an expat!! Noone forced JV to come to England, noone forced him to sign a contract to play football for presumably well above average wages, Missing Mummy is no excuse for poor performance, it is pathetic. What ever happened to professionalism?
The fact the Manager has stated the reasons he took JV off at Weymouth, also expressing his disappointment at JVs lack of committment is a refreshing change from all the meagre excuses that previous managers have used to cover up the fact that some players simply have a poor attitude to team and club and supporters. Money and Agents are regrettably the only motivators for some players.!!! I am looking forward to a season where every player who wears a saints shirt is totally committed to the cause. Come on you reds!!!

You might need to take up watching the under 18's to see that i'm afraid! Still glad to see a manager wanting commitment to the team from all his players, something that most of the top clubs are pretty hot on so there is obviously something in it.

I always thought that Viafara would grow into a Legend for Saints, but he has become just another free loader. I cannot remember him putting a fully committed 90 minutes for Saints. His late return from summer break and attitude last night are an insult to every hard working Saints supporter. It is a petty as, along with the promise of our younster, a Viafara with the right attitude would havew added much need muscle to our side for The Championship. We do need to bring in some muscle, but only if the players are 110% committed. I don't disagree too much with The Tigers team selection, although worried about the full backs for pace, and that Killer will be fit enough to start the season. Also, not convinced on Wotton - "are you Jermain Wright in disguise"?? I will remain Saints Forever.

Personal problems are so-called because they are just that: personal. I doubt Jhon would appreciate the press and fans knowing about his personal problems as I'm sure you wouldn't, if it were you.

Tha fact is, he's obviously got something going on, whether it's family, medical or just using it as a mask for not enjoying his football over here, but he has to sit down with the manager and work out what he wants to do. Which is what he's doing.

All we can do is wish him all the best. I personally think he had a terrible season just gone, he very rarely played a whole 90 mins and do I remember right in thinking he had some family issues so he was away from the team for a couple of weeks??

He played very well the season before and I thought he could have been a legend.

Whatever happens (stay or go?) I wish him the best and hope he sorts himself out quickly.

Kicking the ball into the crowd is not only unprofessional, it is a stupid, nasty, infantile indication of a typically spoilt and pampered footballer. It should have been a fine of two weeks wages and an apology because for all he knew he could have hit a young fan in the face and with his skill and commitment the ball could have gone anywhere..Everyone here attacking the manager for speaking openly rather than caving in to the pathetic Ferguson like practice of protecting his footballers as though they are petulant children needs their head examining. And in what way did Lowe cause Viafara to have a bad game exactly? Did the nasty chairman upset the poor little millionaire footballer then? awwwww.

Once again, the negativity on this site is truly awesome! Obviously, the serious stuff has not started yet, but I have to say that so far everything JP has said and done gives me a lot more optimism than this time last year. He says what he thinks (in typical Dutch style!), has handled the Dyer and Viafara situations decisively, is committed to playing 'proper' football, and looks as though he will pick on merit, rather than GB with his favourites. He quite clearly feels he has something to prove, not just to us, but to people in Holland where he feels he has not had a fair crack. He is hungry, takes no sh1te, and will demand the same commitment from the players. Give the guy a chance, we might be pleasantly surprised, and even if we are not, he is all we've got!!!!

Ther will plenty of us at the games, home and away. Same as there were when we were shouting for the head of (the now 'sainted') Ted Bates for being a rubbish manager.

Things change. The only thing that shouldn't change is people supporting their team in a comradely - and less insulting - way.

The bottom line is we are, and always have been for the last 50 years, an average team of average players which sometimes punches above its weight.

It may be the the new management team may be able to achieve the same again. It will be more likely to happen if everyone, including the people who post on this message board, were to be positive or to shut up..

A great thought to start the new day with. I've been saying it for ages. All the whiners have a choice. They can support the Team or walk away.

I wish they were able to support the Team / Club / Management with real enthusiasm as I think its going to be a rough old season and nerves might well be tested to the very end.

We need to be supporting each other and not always sniping away which I have been guilty of I admit.

My excuse (feeble it might be) is that my belief is that we should look forward and be positive.

You clearly have no command of the English language, certainly you have a very limited vocabulary, and appear to be able only to support your case with abusive and foul language. I would go further than Redbridge - you border on the retard!
You had better check your grammar old chap, or old girl. It is not perfect, although your spelling seems to be ok. Please be careful when you criticise others though.
What does "you border on the retard" mean by the way?
Be careful with your mother tongue Egomaniac, for it might lick you to death!
Be careful out there y'all.

Sorry forgot one... Andrew Surman, criminally overated, lacks pace and quality where it matters. Would be better to get what we can for him. Not a left back, not a left midfielder, not a central midfielder... therfore, useless!
It\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s all very well saying somebody\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s useless and you wanna get rid of them but who would you be desperate to keep and why?
Would want to keep; Poortvielt, seems to have an idea Lallana, looks neat and tidy on the ball The rest not to fussed about, mostly seem to lack flair and tallent on the ball anyhow. But i blaim the parents and schoolteachers for giving them the wrong philosophy. People teach your children to be gready with the ball to want to run at and beat the defender rather than pass. It\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s the only way they learn!
Would that be the same teachers that taught you how to spell?? Blame not blaim, greedy not gready
Another teacher on here. There is an old adage which says that if you can, you do, and if you can't, you teach. Any thoughts on that?

Thank you to everybody who have turned this post from one about football to a grammer and spelling jubelie. I am everso sorry that i missed this sooner but for all of you here is a topic of conversation that you can discuss;
In my opinon Des O'Conner does not do anywhere near as good a job presenting Countdown as Richard Whitely used to.
Ps. If you want to critisise a post for its content then o.k but keep it your critisism to the footballing issues after all the posts are about football if you want to veer off into spelling, grammer, and punctuation then i would suggest checking out the OED's official site. Honestly its shocking how much free time P.e teachers have these days!

Ther will plenty of us at the games, home and away. Same as there were when we were shouting for the head of (the now \'sainted\') Ted Bates for being a rubbish manager. Things change. The only thing that shouldn\'t change is people supporting their team in a comradely - and less insulting - way. The bottom line is we are, and always have been for the last 50 years, an average team of average players which sometimes punches above its weight. It may be the the new management team may be able to
