Saints show delights Poortvliet

Jan Poortvliet was a happy man after seeing his Saints side draw 2-2 with West Ham at St Mary's last night.

Poortvliet had promised to treat the game as if it were next Saturday's Championship opener against Cardiff and saw his current first choice side, apart from the injured Kelvin Davis, put in an excellent display.

David McGoldrick netted both Saints goals in the first half but the Premiership side battled back to make it 2-2.

Saints' performance was well received by the 12,000 fans in the ground and Poortvliet was delighted with the way his side performed in their penultimate friendly before the Championship season begins.

He said: "We have to look at the game in general and everyone has seen a good game and a quick game from both sides.

"The first 45 minutes we were outstanding, we made two goals and we deserved it. We had everything - good pressure, good football, shots on goal.

"It was very good and the second half we played good.

"On certain moments we made mistakes and we have to learn from that but I think in general the boys played 90 minutes and continued to try to play and play and play, and I think we were a bit unlucky Jake Thomson didn't make it 3-1.

"In general we are satisfied and I think everybody would have enjoyed the game.

"We try to bring a quickness in the game from the goalkeeper throwing the ball out to passing quick going forwards and I think everyone will be happy with that.

"Everything now has to bring results and confidence but from last night they can take a lot of confidence."

This guy appears to be what the club have lacked since Strachan left. Open and frank with his comments, certainly not defending players or making excuses. If players like James, Gillett and Thomson are up to it why weren't they being played last season?

I read comments on this site calling the coacg a donkey and clueless etc...well, he certainly is not...I saw some sheer brilliant football last night with the players moving, passing and rotating like never before, the work rate was sky high and fully deserved to beat west ham if it not was for their equaliser which was miles off side..

those who want to stay away because of lowe are welcome to, the rest of us are in for some fantastic games at SMS this season..

That's excellent news about free flowing football. I'm hoping to come down for the Stoke game if I can get the day off work. I'm also hoping a lot of other fans are going to be there. I can't believe we are only attracting 12,000 fans.
Still think we need a fullback but a question to people who were at the game last night, who should be our starting 11?

I have been calling for McG ever since he bagged the goals in the reserves. Idiots in these forums say he doesnt have championship experience. Fact is he does know where the goal is! That applies to all the young kids, no experience??? who cares, they give 110%. Not like the prima donnas we have had. They could kill some of the championship teams with fitness.

It was clear last season that the players weren't fit. I felt that Pearson tried to rectify this but it was too little too late.

It's great to see young players coming back into the team. It reminds me of my youth when I used to see Le Tiss, Shearer, the Wallaces, Benali and Dodd at The Dell.

Well Done Saints! Saints last night were superb, some of the passing and movement was outstanding. The Stoke game will be a good test, playing against a much more physical side. The football on show last night is beginning banish the memories I still have of the last two seasons' dire home games against Colchester! Be there on Tuesday night! COYR

Fantastic stuff from the youngsters, they were a credit to the R&W shirt. What a difference a pre-season makes. Got rid of a load of dead wood (more still to go, brought in enthusiasm. Feet on the ground though, this is still pre-season. To me its shaping up like we'll hammer a few sides in the league, but will equally get a few bashings as well (remember there are a lot of bruisers and cloggers that won't let us play). Bring on the season, and to all you stay aways - come back and put your money where your mouth is, the club needs it - whatever our views are about the boardroom. Swallow your pride and prejudice and fill the stadium for these kids, they are worth it.

Saints have a great result, show some real promise...and the whingers, moaners and Lowe haters are nowhere to be seen.

Good news. Hopefully they'll crawl back under their rocks and leave the real fans to get behind the club.

You don't have to like Rupert Lowe to see that Portvliet has Saints playing some quality football. We stil have some fine tuning to do, but I'll be there as much as possible this year, cheering the lads on with all my heart.
With a bit of passion and belief, promotion isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We played well last night. We looked to go forward we had some enthusiasm, we looked hungry and up for it. First half I'm not sure west Ham got the ball!

However we looked small and weak compared to a West Ham side that were still only building up to their season. When Lowe returned and bought in Jan I was mortified but now I am cautiously optimistic, however Cardiff away in the Championship (and the like) will be a completely different kettle of fish to West Ham home in a frindly

I must admit, though, to being dissolusioned with Lowe's return and I thought it was a BIG mistake that big Nige didn't have his contract renewed..but now I'm very happy to be eating my own words.

I saw more football played in 90 minutes last night than in the last two seasons, put together!

An excellent performance against a strong West Ham side Bellamy, Upson, Neill etc.
(who used about 8 subs, to our one)

Good flowing sensible well-thought out football played out by players hungry for the ball and working as a team, if this is Saints under Poortvliet then I can't wait for the season to start.

Great to see Svensson back, didn't put a foot (or head) wrong all night, and will make a superb captain and example to the youngsters.
The only under-par performance came from Bart who looked very shaky an did not caommand his area at all.

Ignore the idiot that is SF76 - if it is who I think it is thank god the National Front supporting muppet will be nowhere near St Marys eh Tris?

What a great display last night - when the teams were announced I was concerned as only Killer and Perry were over 23! However, the football played was beautiful with a real edge and the lads really got stuck in and gave West Ham no time on the ball at all.

It made me, for the first time in many years, proud to be a Saints fan and to see hungry, up for it, proud to wear the shirt team playing for each other was a joy to behold.

James was outstanding at RB and it looks like he has made that position his own (with Hatch in the wings), Gillett and Schneiderlin ran midfield and Thomson and Holmes worked their socks off on the wings and frightened West Ham with their skill and speed.

McGoldrick also had a blinder and was everywhere in search of the ball.

I cannot remember ever watching a Saints side pass the ball as well and as consistently as last night. I think the writing is on the wall for players like Rasiak, Saga and SKacel.

To think, we have players waiting in the wings like Patterson, White, Hatch, Mills, Gobern, Racine....the future really does look bright. A top 10 finish will exceed all expectations this season.

I'm loving what JP and Wotte are doing.....in such a short space of time they have turned us from one dimensional hoof and hope side to a cultured, dangerous side with pace, movement and plenty of skill.

DJI, Kingsland says...
11:12am Sat 2 Aug 08

I found myself sitting in the Kingsland smiling as I watched my Team enjoying themselves on the pitch. I have seen some of the other friendlies too and have been impressed with the youngsters ever since. They don't give up, attack as a force, and support each other in defence.

For anyone who went last night; can you ever remember Saints tackling so much in recent times? Ever area of the pitch saw a Saints shirt tackling and winning the ball back or getting it to safety. Holmes, right in front of Northum, put in a great tackle on the right to deny the Hammers left winger and send him of the floor! For anyone that doesn't know, Holmes is our left winger!

I loved to see the confident Schneiderlin making plays, controlling the midfield, passing around the park. Some of his little flicks were sensational and completely wrong-footed the opposition. Last season, our players tried this and failed miserably; it shows what players with confidence can do!

Lloyd James in right back had a great game but I agree we need another player to slot in if he gets injured. But James certainly looks the part, making some telling tackles at the right times and, instead of giving possesion away, starts the play off again. Question for those who went: how many corners did we concede last night? Far less than any other game last season. In fact, most of the time, we won the ball and, through good movement by others, were able to make an attack again.

For all those with principles, put them in your sock drawer and come and watch an exciting team, full of energy, confidence and pride, playing for each other and the RED & WHITE of Saints.

Clever touch from Holmes at the end, walking the pitch and applauding the supporters; at a home game! Not a bad start for someone who has just joined the club.

Great performance last night, we played with hunger, determination and style! We played some excellent football and out played West Ham in many passages of the game. West Ham fielded a good side and we deservedly got a draw, my main concern is the lack of height at set pieces, but get Davies back and perhaps Wayne Thomas somewhere along the back line and I think that can be resolved.

I know its only one game but I am quite optimistic about the new season, we looked much fitter and hungrier than last season - play like this throughout the season and there will be much more room for optimism!

Lets just get some good crowds in St Marys to back the team!

No, we're not going to win every game, and yes, we're sure to get a few stuffings along the way, but that's the CCC for you. The great thing about this style of football is that if you go up you don't have to change totally to adapt to the demands of the Premiership, which is what happened in the past few years with Watford, Palace, Sunderland (pre-Keane) and Derby.
No reason why Saints can't soon become a Premiershihp force again.

What a game did not come away feeling dissapointed at all, if only a little hard done by that we did not win it. The football was brilliant running circles round the other team and a brilliant passing percentage. Lee Holmes is great down the wing and we where just missing Dyers pace down the other side. Surman plays well as a sort of attacking left defence feeding through well to Holmes and the other mid fielders. David McGoldrick seems to be fairly accurate and hits the target even if the keeper saves it you got to hit the target to score. I agree we need to hang on to Stern we would be in div 1 if it was not for his goals last season and we need his experiance up front. I really am looking forward to the season now we have a good team of lads that want to play and want play right up until the end of the match. With regard to the team I have never made a negative comment and was impressed at what I saw against Celtic. Other commitments meant I could not be there last night so I cannot comment on the match. I have looked for the opinions of the media and Hammers fans to get a line free of spin. What is undeniable though is that the squad still needs strengthening at full back and up front. Hate Lowe love the club.
We spent 27 years in the top flight, 10 years of which Lowe was at the helm. In 2 seasons without Lowe we were one game away from Division 3. Get over him, and support YOUR team.
And for five of those seasons he had more resources at his disposal than any previous chairman. He messed up big time for which I will never forgive him so you stop your spin, stop denying the truth about him and like me support the saints but hate Lowe. The last two years were the consequences of his actions.

Great result, BUT what about low crowd, dont think it short term only 9500 ST sold. We need to get fans back to games.

I hate no-one.

Except perhaps those that try to force their opinion onto others.

12,000+ for a pre-season FRIENDLY.
Pretty good turn-out considering the number of people away on holiday.
If they continue to play the way they did last night the crowds will soon start rising. Might even force a U-turn about closing the corners.

I too and bored of all this Lowe talk, lets just ignore the attention-seeker and support OUR club. A successful buyer will be looking for an attractive investment, not a half-empty one.

I admit I don't like Lowe but everyone deserves a second chance and this time he seems to have got it right. most fans I know wanted to see the youngsters bought in last season. We always wanted entertaining football as well results and it looks like we will get it.
