WARRING families wreaked havoc when they went on the rampage in a Southampton estate.

The two groups of people burst into the road in the middle of the afternoon, armed with crossbows, baseball bats and planks of wood.

Men and women of all ages, including teens and people in their 60s, were involved in the mass brawl which broke out on Bassett's Flowers Estate on Saturday afternoon.

Residents watched on in horror from inside and outside their homes in Violet Road as the fight, which lasted about half and hour, escalated.

At one point the crossbow was fired and the metal bolt was shot into a car parked in the street.

Others were battered about their heads and bodies with the wood and bats, leaving three people in need of hospital treatment.

Women, thought to include mothers and girlfriends of those fighting, were seen running, shouting and screaming as the violence continued.

Police were called to the fracas shortly after 3pm and it is understood paramedics arrived to take the injured parties to Southampton General Hospital.

One man suffered abdominal injuries after being hit with the plank of wood while a second was treated for a gash to his head.

A third person was also taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

Detectives are today continuing to investigate the violence which is thought to have involved up to 15 people.

Three men in their early 20s have been arrested and were last night being spoken to by police.

Detective Sergeant Dave Jackson, from Bitterne CID, said: "This was a serious violent disorder that happened in the middle of the street, in full view of the public.

"Violence of any nature within a community is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We know that this incident was witnessed by many people who either live in or where in Violet Road on Saturday afternoon and I would urge them to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call 0845 045 4545 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Unacceptable behaviour - I beg to differ, this is exactly the behaviour that has been sanctioned by a weak liberal society.

Who the hell is armed with a cross bow? Weren't those popular in the middle ages or am I missing something here? Either way totally unacceptable behaviour, you can see why the youth of today act the way they do if this is the kind of moronic parenting they have been brought up with.

Totally agree with Clive.Something does not add up.
Totally unacceptable behaviour and these people should be very much monitored from now on and put away if they move their finger again (apart if they do honest work).
I am amazed that the police is just speaking to 3 of them... there are 3 more in hospital to have a word and put some sense and charges onto (or are they the same ones? if this is the case not great policing).
I hope they track the 15 of them + girlfriends etc. and get to police them properly.

I am fed up of normal people being always soft target persecuted by the police and the scum of the society making our life misery always getting off lightly.

Years ago you only had one idiot living in your road, now you possible may have 10 or more. Give these people some descent weapons and let them wipe each other of the face off the earth.
We now live in New Zealand, we get to look at green fields, ice bergs and penguins, a long way from the stabbings, beatings and drug dealing of the council estates in southampton.

It's been brewing for weeks.
Police surveillence and outsider criminals watching as well, just waiting for this to explode.

As for pensioners, well thats no surprise, once a crim with 'status' they dare not step back and be seen as weak, natural justice the law of the jungle at its best would mean not just loss of face/status...

The good people on the Flowers, yes I know a few of them and they outnumber the chav/crim's 10-1 or more, have to put up with this background of intimidation and violence all year round, the problem isn't easy to solve, where ever the problem families are put they carry on just the same.
One lot I had dealings with were put into a good area, according to social services "so they might learn from others and improve themselves", all they did was start to drag the area down to their level, violent disorder, assault, theft went through the roof, until they picked on the wrong family...
I wonder if thats what happened here???

Finlay often comes blasting in on any thread such as this and wishes to compare the glorious USA with the much reported crime and anti-social behaviour. Most of us are concerned about the high degree of lawlessness and failures by those in charge.

However he posts from Iowa - a fairly nice albeit non descript kind of place and without many of the city connurbations that tend to throw up the scum underclass.

Finlay - how come you dont move to any of the well known hellholes scattered all over America?

They have big problems with the ongoing gang/drugs warfare and there are many well known No-Go areas. The Flowers and associated areas pale into insignificance when looking across the water so perhaps Finlay needs to look at the wider picture instead of banging away on the same soapbox on every opportunity.

Flowers/Thornhill/Mi
llbrook/Townhill Park etc most people are OK and we all know that most problems are caused by problem families who infest any area.

We dont know the full story yet but perhaps the authorities are just sitting back and letting the feuding families sort it from within?

Same with warring druggie/gangtaz in South London. Maybe if they all kill each other then the rest of us can carry on with a normal life?

Trouble is the innocent bystanders or passers by.

Its really getting to be a Mad Max/Clockwork Orange kind of world

Mr E, Eastleigh says...
1:47pm Mon 4 Aug 08

these so caled 'problem' families cost a fortune in damage to the area they live in.

build an estate away from decent folk with 20 foot wall around it , CCTV on the streets and a police station at the enterance, then put all the troublemakers in there.

stop the rediculous policy if trying to make them integrate with the 95% of the population that are law abideing

Att: Finlay the pseudo Yank. Taken from an Iowa chatsite.

"Waterloo does have a bad reputation in Iowa and it is somewhat deserved. As far as Iowa is concerned there is a tad bit more crime than average, most notably on the east side of the Cedar River. The west side of Waterloo is your normal mid-sized Iowa city. Again this is all relative to Iowa, so Waterloo isn't a ghetto infested city, it's just more "urban" and diverse than other places in Iowa"

Why is everyone so quick to judge the yoof of today? The poor little lambs have nothing better to do because our criminally inept council refuse to build an ice rink where they could congregate.

However, the OAPS should know better. It's time to legalise euthanasia for the coffin dodgers. This would help the economy as well by reducing the drain on the NHS and the pension coffers.

Everything is about cause and effect... this was obviously a riot started by some crusty old folks who were bored because the bingo was closed.

The poor much maligned yoof try to restore order with the judicious use of baseball bats (which they cannot use to play baseball because the council insists on concreting over the parks for new houses and even more shopping centres) and a crossbow.

At least the yoofs were partaking in some exercise - something else they get accused of shirking.

Ban the Blue Rinse Brigade - long live the yoof (well, until they themselves become old and decrepid and become a burden to society, then they should be summarily executed.

Speaking from experience the police do nothing constructive in these instances even when provided with hard evidence.
It does not surprise me at all that people take action in to their own hands, not that it is right. I still don’t understand why as an authority we have to provide housing for these families when they behave so badly. Until you have had one of these families living near you its hard to imagine just how horrible they make life for everyone.

Why is it always the chav estates that have these problems? These people that were fighting will probably be evicted, the Council do seem to take this seriously but why always is the fighting on a council estate?

I have witnessed the same stupid idiots fighting (council house family) in Kendal Avenue, Millbrook, Derby Road, St Mary's, Hinkler Road, Thornhill, Oak (I believe it was called) Road, Woolston, Sholing, and Warren Avenue, Shirley Warren. I have never seen this in Testwood, Totton, Chilworth, Regent's Park, Upper Shirley, Ocean Village or Lyndhurst. Basically where people own their own homes.

Why do the rest of us have to put up with these people. I appreciate they are not as clever or well bred as the rest of us but we are doing our best to help them with our tax paying their housing, food, booze and 4 x 4. Surely we should stop helping these people in this way and help to educate them on how to live properly. There are good arguments for cloning and test tube babies that are genetically enhanced like those that don't live in a council estate.

Whilst on the subject, why do houses on Council estates look the same. They all seem to have an outsized dog, a 4x4 vehicle or an old Jaguar on bricks out the front. Their gardens are nearly always overgrown and have bottles and for some reason an over turned childs trike somewhere in the garden, or a mattress. Telephone wires and street lights often have a pair of trainers or a bike tyre thrown over them and everyone seems compelled to wear tracksuits, large hooped earings and pink tops (and thats just the men). They don't speak properly either, they always say, "I don't know nothing" and "Innit." Why?

I hope those responsible for fighting are tried, found guilty and thrown into jail!

Yeah its not right that innocent people have to put up with this type of thing, but when you live on an estate or anywhere for that matter, people do have disputes, arguments, if the police do nothing then sometimes people have to sort it themselves.

They don\'t speak properly either, they always say, \"I don\'t know nothing\" and \"Innit.\" Why? I hope those responsible for fighting are tried, found guilty and thrown into jail!
Well said young man/lady.

It's always baffled me about the upturned trike and mattress in the front garden. Sometimes they have a supermarket trolley there too and why do all (male) chavs like to walk around without their shirts on displaying their unimpressive tattoos and weedy torso's - quite remarkab
