MICHAEL Svensson will complete one of the greatest injury comebacks in sporting history tomorrow when he leads Saints out at Cardiff 991 days after last playing a competitive match.

The Swedish centre half has been named as Saints captain for the new season having overcome five major knee operations over a four-year period to return to league football.

He will skipper the side in tomorrow's Championship opener at Ninian Park. Svensson said: "I never doubted I would see this day."

Head coach Jan Poortvliet can't wait to have Svensson back for his first competitive game in charge.

"Svensson for me is the key player," said Poortvliet. "Svensson is a player you need."

I think the echo might slightly be overstating the case when they say
MICHAEL Svensson will complete one of the greatest injury comebacks in sporting history tomorrow
.
What about Henrick Larson coming back from a tripple compund fracture of his feemur?

This is an amazing story. I just hope his body stands up to the season ahead, and that he stays injury free. If he can, it'll be like signing a top quality player for this season. At last something to really cheer about

Gone on loan to some Danish side. Sort of says it all really. Lightweight player, vastly over-rated . Not as bad as thingy we bought from Hearts, mind.

Killer back is the best Saints news for years lets hope he is Ok until end of season. Good that Saga out on loan. It is a shame Euell and Skacel are on such high wages (for a CCC club) that they will not go. Most true footballers would rather be playing than take money out of the club for doing nothing. Come on Wilde there must be someone we can talk into taking that rubbish.

A truly inspirational man. Well done Killer.
What a great ambassador to the young people out there you are.
It goes to show that if you really want something you can work as hard as you can, have the right mindset and family support behind you and you can achieve your hopes/dreams an goals.
Well done and I really hope all goes well.
We would still be in the Premier league if it wasn't for this injury. I think all true Saints fans have been through most stages of the injury with you minus the ops and pain of course !
Killer the Hero and a true Saint.

991 days, what a lazy waste of space. Sounds like a benefit cheat, probably been out getting cash in hand jobs all this time.

well done saints! this is the best signing of the pre-season! michael svensson is an outstanding footballer and its great to have him back. we've truly missed him in my opinion and i know its all hindsight now but i believe we wouldnt of been relegated if he was in our defence that season (but thats a discussion for the pub after a few beers) .if he's only half as good as he used to be then he'll still be good enough for this division.
and he's the perfect choice for captain too as he is every thing we want in a saints player. he's dedicated, loyal, strong , passionate, works his socks off and he wants to play for saints, he wants to wear our colours and he's an example to all professionals that if you want to play again and are willing to put the effort in, then you can achieve anything. he'll lead by example and hopefully the rest of the players, staff and fans will follow him and jan poortvliet to the premier league one day soon.
