A HAMPSHIRE family has been left devastated after their garden pond was poisoned with industrial strength cleaner killing more than 250 pet fish.

Dad of two Tony Martin said more than £2,000 of fish died after someone deliberately threw a gallon bottle of cleaning detergent over the fence of his back garden.

Now the 44-year-old has offered a £500 reward to help find who is responsible for the mindless act of vandalism' that has left his two children distraught.

Tony, of Kingsclere Avenue, Weston, said: "My nine-year-old daughter Suzzana is absolutely devastated. Over the years she has saved up her pocket money to buy a number of fish. She's named quite few of them and just can't believe what has happened.

"It's not only cruel to me and my family but it's also downright cruel to the fish. There's a great big pile of expensive dead fish next to our pond now. I just don't understand why anyone would want to do that. Maybe it's jealousy because we have such a nice collection.

We had every fish you could think of in that pond including carps, orfs and goldfish."

This is the second time vandals have targeted the pond. Two years ago more than 50 fish were found floating in the pond but it was unclear what killed them.

Tony added: "We also had seven terrapins that belonged to my 15-year-old son. One of them has died and a number are missing. He's looking for them now. We have had the police round to check for fingerprints, but so far they haven't found anything. But I would like to put a reward out for any information on who did this."

The incident is believed to have happened on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police, said: "This was a cruel thing to do and we are investigating this incident by conducting house-to-house inquiries and having our forensic team examine the detergent bottle. We would appeal for any witnesses or anyone who knows anything to come forward."

Anyone with any information should call Bitterne police station on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or the Daily Echo on 02380 424496.

The only question should be 'Who have you upset recently?'...The answer will be those who put the cleaning fluid in the pond.

Er, no, sadly not. There are plenty of morons with no imagination and no empathy for other people who would just do this for 'a laugh'. Except its not a laugh even for them, they are just hollow husks who don't understand their own motivations.

my sympathy goes out to this family, I know its only fish but you do become attatched to them, i keep tropical fish so realise the time and expense that goes into keeping fish, its always sad when one dies that you have had for years and watched grow, let alone losing a pond full.I hope the offender is caught, and punished.how would you feel if this was your cat, dog or ferret.Or even snake.

It would not happen. i would not keep my dog, cat, ferret etc in my pond. That sounds a bit cruel on its own.

I think the poor beast might be a bit confused i started off with a dog and it seemed allright when i replaced its head for a ferrets. The snakes tail was cool. But the cat in it is really starting to wind the dog up.

if raymond had left the fish he caught at millers pond and not taken them home they would still be alive now....he seems to go around catching fish from most ponds..which is illegal and limits others pleasure of fishing....may be some one should put a £500 reward on him for fish theft...

As can be seen by the news clip below this same crime occurred in Hedge End in two adjoining fish ponds.
I wonder if the same people struck again in Weston or are they different persons. I really hope those responsible are caught and made to pay for their moronic actions.

THOUSANDS of pounds worth of fish and equipment have been destroyed after it is believed that chemicals were poured into two neighbouring fish ponds at Hedge End.

Vandals struck at the two ponds in Rose Close. The fish, including sturgeon and koi carp, were killed and valuable equipment was damaged.

Police have appealed for witnesses as the hunt continued today for the culprits. A reward has also been offered in a bid to capture them Between the two addresses, at least £7,000 worth of damage was caused, excluding the labour that will be involved in repairing them.

One of the victims, who did not want to be named, said: "The damage done is covered by home and pet insurance, but this does not make up for the distress caused, or the destruction of a lifetime's work."

Environmental health officers took water samples to identify the chemicals. Scenes of crime officers also took samples for evidence.

The victim has offered a reward of £500 for information that will lead to a conviction.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the vandalism which happened on Saturday night after 10.30pm or Sunday morning before 6am.

Ring Eastleigh police station on 0845 045 4545 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
