Don't panic, urges Svensson

MICHAEL Svensson has urged his teammates not to panic after Saints' winless start to the season.

Jan Poortvliet's men have performed well for long periods in their two Coca-Cola Championship fixtures so far, at Cardiff on the opening day and at home to Birmingham last weekend.

But they have yet to pick up any league points as both games ended ultimately in defeat.

Club captain Svensson, though, insists that it is too early in the season to be overly alarmed.

"It's important we don't panic," the 32-year-old Swedish defender said.

"It's just two games into the season and we have to stay positive and try to look at the good things we have been doing and not only the negative stuff."

Svensson is taking heart from those good things and has seen signs in both games that have given him confidence that Saints can break their duck against Derby on Saturday.

But he also feels that there have been lessons, which must be learned.

"We have been playing quite good so we look forward," he said.

"No one should be downbeat. It's too early and it's top teams we have played against and we have done pretty well against them."

He's right, we will have played 3 or 4 of the teams that I think would be pushing for promotion within the firt 6 games of the season. The time to panic is Xmas, if we're still around the relegation zone.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a team that mostly comprises youngsters with no experience in this league to get off to a 100% good start, it will take time for the team to gel and get into a rhythm. I just hope it doesn't take too long that we have to play catch-up all season.

I fully agree with Killer!
But!, we need more than a basic squad.
We need cover for the defence and up front.
Once injuries & suspensions start kicking in, where is the cover going to come from?
Would be nice to hear something from Mr Wilde on how hard he's working to bring in loan players.Lets hope we get a good result on Saturday, kick things off in the right direction.

Well said Kate. Neither is there any reason for the fans to panic. Many of the posters on this site, complaining about the team and the administration, are boneless hysterics and are best ignored.

I think he is absolutely right about not flapping yet. We have played possibly two of the toughest games we will have this season and lost narrowly with a very young team who were the better side for much of both games.
The small squad does worry me but whilst we can't do too much about our financial state immediately we can all help by trying encourage the fans back in and forcing the club to reopen the whole ground. How many people know somebody who is staying away ??? I understand with the credit crunch its not easy for some but by staying away we are not upsetting Lowe. He will only carry on selling to make up the cash difference. The only ones who are suffering are the fans.
We might not have the best team in the league but we do have the best fans - we need to start proving it again and getting our mates along to the ground again.

I read this morning that we are definately getting Pulis Jnr from Stoke, and also Jack Cork fromm Chelsea on loan until January (he's 19 and can play anywhere along the back 4)...

Dan, soton says...

As well as we have played at points in our first couple of games... as good as the opposition may or may not have been... as poor as we are... we still need to be realistic!.. we have little/no cover.. plus McGoldrick is young and talented but is not capable of more than 10/12 first team goals, Stern will get 10 goals or so due to limited appearances, BWP may get 6/7 if played, the midfield may get 6/7 between them... this tally of goals means around 30 points in total... unless McGoldrick becomes clinical instantly then we could well be lucky to get 10 points by Xmas.

I realise that we are not meant to have anything negative to say on this site but people that subscribe to the 'lets keep spending our money and trust wilde and lowe and live in la la land' are simply not being realistic...

I believe that Lowe will drive down our wage bill and costs to a manageable amount.... until the consequence is that we get relegated and he will have to go through the same process again.

What I do not understand how Wilde has the nerve to take the holier than thou when he wasted the clubs money whilst he was in and never bothered to invest any of his own cash... I believe that it is he that has put us in the position we are in today...

All above comments true.

The good/bad thing about the Championship is that very few points moves you a long way up or down the table.

As ever the optimist, I believe that once we start winning it will boost the team and the crowd and we'll have a bit of a surge (3 wins in a row is my definition of a surge)

Dan,

I don't understand why you think Woopert might have it in his head to drive down the wage bill to achieve relegation.

What I believe is that he must drive down the wage bill to one that we can afford and plan forward from that time.

Don't forget that each returning 1,000 fans puts another £500,0000 into the player's budget.

Pulis is absolute rubbish. He's barely played for three seasons and even when he's been out on loan to lower league teams, they've not selected him, so what does that say?

Plus, he's a midfielder. Why on earth do we need another midfielder?! I can't believe for one minute that Poortvliet went to Lowe with Pulis on his list of wanted players. It's Lowe taking the cheapest possible option yet again.

No idea about Jack Cork, but will he be as good as Andrew Davies? Or will it be yet another case of the player coming in being no where near as good as the player going out?

I see the ostriches are out in force this morning. When will these Lowe loving, mistaken optimists pull their heads out of the sand and have a good look at what is happening. We sell Davies and get Pulis. It is all a pantomime, a farce, a circus and all it does is make a mockery of our once proud and soundly managed club. I am a bit like St Peter these days in that I now deny I am a Saints supporter when asked by fans of other clubs. I just can’t stand the p1ss taking anymore. I have nothing that I can claim is virtuous about the Saints and makes them worth supporting. Once upon a time I could have said the Saints were a family club with loyal fans, they were soundly managed and had some really good players but now we have kids, no money, and our management has become the laughing stock of football. All thanks to Lowe and Askham and not Wilde and his cronies, they were johnny come lately types who arrived after the damage had been done by Askham letting Lowe into our club.

Remember the start of last season and the 1 - 4 stuffing at home to Palace, the humiliating defeat v Peterboro.

At least we are playing good football, I'm gonna give them until Christmas to see how this young team progresses.

As to the finances, the previous administration took us to the brink of div 1 and the abyss of administration.

The Bank has set out the criteria for the future and the unpalatable fact is SFC has now to budget accordingly. Face up to the fact we can’t afford to pay high wages to players on the books so they have to be sold or loaned out. Any players bought in on loan have to be affordable.

I couldn’t care less who is on the Board of Directors, as long as they get the club back on a sound financial footing I’ll be happy

Two we take Brum out in C.Cup and we are off.

I think some overlook the fact that GB bless him and Scotland? took on and bought some expensive wage earners when we were getting in debt so it doesn't help today's situation with selling and cutting, so be it. I think some SFC fans should finally wake up and get behind the team and not talk out of theirs.

I go to the games, I spend my money, I have never picked a manager nor signed/sold a player for SFC... yet we find ourselves in this predicament... so, lets be fair about who has taken us here... Lowe and Wilde have sold crucial players unlike me... Lowe and Wilde have bought very bad players in for wasted money unlike me.... Lowe and Wilde would rather a half full stadium than encourage a higher attendance to 'get behind the team' unlike me.... Lowe and WIlde have spent fortunes of the clubs money paying off managers and execs that they got tired off or disagreed with - unlike me...

How sensible is it for the bank to impose a trimming of the squad to the point where by relegation becomes a probability come christmas??.. surely that would merely mean less revenue in the lower league and yet increased risk of bankruptcy?

LETS GET IT STRAIGHT - THE FANS PAY THEIR MONEY , AIR THEIR VIEWS AND LOVE/SUPPORT THE TEAM... BUT EVERYTHING THAT WILDE AND LOWE HAVE DONE IS TYPICALLY COUNTER PRODUCTIVE TO THE CAUSE.

IF LOWE IS THE RIGHT MAN TO GET THE CLUB BACK ON TRACK WHY THE HELL DID WILDE INSIST THAT HE NEEDED TO BE REMOVED TWO YEARS AGO?

IF THE WILDE FAILED TO DELIVER ON ANY OF HIS PROMISES WHEN HE TOOK OVER THEN WHY DOES LOWE FEEL IT CORRECT THAT HE SHOULD CARRY A POSITION OF POWER NOW?

I agree, very interesting indeed, the article states:

“Football is littered with tales of boom and bust, ridiculous overspending and chronic mismanagement”

The one thing that I would like to add to that is Southampton PLC have always prided itself on its financial prudence. There has been no boom for Saints Fans

It also states that the average wage of a Championship Players is 3,700. I would imagine that Saints average wage, is by now, well bellow this figure.

We all know the dangers of this kind of financial prudence, if Southampton are relegated into league 1 then Southampton are more or less assured of eventual administration.

If we sell Drew Surman, how is the club linked to the city? I don’t know about everyone else but I would rather pay to watch people represent the city that I live in than, even if it does mean Frank Lampard representing a city who’s language he cant even speak.

The truth is our national sport is heading exactly where Sebb Blater wants it to go. Two professional leagues and no “slave’s”. After all he is in charge.

There is no place in his mind for Southampton, Luton, Sheffield Wednesday or Leeds (let alone Reading). In ten years time our children will support whichever team has the best advertising anyway

If I had to choose, then I would choose “boom and bust”. At least that way, if we time it right, we may survive. If we choose the path of “prudence” we are only prolonging the inevitable.

The brainless mob who are advocating some sort of boycott are not supporters of SFC, they are working class scum. Follow their lead if you want to destroy SFC. Rupert is our master, rah rah rah.
I note the number of brain cells you have, mind you, from your post I would say you are looking at 50% less than the three. So Gary is your hero, sums you up quite nicely.
Warning: Irony does not guarantee an intelligent response Further Warning: Responding to Irony with Irony confuses everyone and makes you look stupid
Responding with irony x3 is better and means I have won this exchange! Please, if you are looking for intelligence go to your cabbage patch and engage the slugs in ironic banter, they have a similar IQ to you but will probably confuse you with ironic comments about salt.
Tag you back - No returns!

I am rubber you are glue. What you say bounces of me and sticks to you!

If you have an IQ higher than a slug. Please give me an ironic comment for the slugs.

1. First of all it\'s Costa not cost. 2. Why should I comment on the above article when the majority of other posters haven\'t? 3. Can\'t remember what the article is about. ;-))))))
because you normally talk rubbish!
How boring you are. Probably bullied at school/work as well, which explains your animosity towards others that try to engage in debate on here. Still I expect you console yourself with the fact that you are \"A TRUE FAN\", because you blindly follow the chosen one. You truly are a Cyber Warrior.
yet again......rubbish
Yawn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to engage in a battle of wits with you, but you are clearly UNARMED.

2 starts no wins . Dont panic yeh ok but isnt this what happened last year how many points did we have after 5 games in sept 2007 and look how the rest of the season panned out. points at the beginning of the season can mean your not fighting the drop at the end.And you should never come away from a home game without at least a point
