JAN Poortvliet has moved quickly to bolster his defence following the departure of Andrew Davies by capturing teenage Chelsea defender Jack Cork on-loan.

Saints have reportedly beaten off competition from Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday and SPL outfit Aberdeen to sign the 19 year-old until New Years Day.

England U19 international Cork, the younger son of former Wimbledon player Alan, can play anywhere across the back. He has also been used as a holding midfielder during loan spells with Scunthorpe and Bournemouth.

He spent the last season on loan at Scunthorpe and played in their 1-0 defeat at St Mary's in January.

Cork, who trained with his new team-mates this morning, will wear the number 30 shirt vacated by Youseff Safri.

How is a loan signing till January really helping us? What it does say is Lancashire and Thomas are not good enough as support for Perry and Svennson...but is this Cork any better? He can also play as a holding midfielder...isn't that why Wotton was brought in?
If Cork has been signed on loan with a view to a possible signing if he can be afforded then I think it's a good move.

Saints are going to struggle though without another proven goal scorer in this division. John can score goals but we don't have anyone experienced upfront on the bench...someone like Dean Windass is what we need.

If we get Ian Harte in as a left back I think this will signal the end of Surman at the club. He will not be needed as we have Holmes, and Skacel still...and he can get us the bigger transfer fee. Probably 3 million is what we'll get for him.

I think we've brought Cork in because he can play in most positions in Midfield and defence... This could be a good piece of business, especially as we've got a fairly thin squad and a few utility players (Wotton etc..)could be the key...

The Press have reported this wrong....when they heard we were signing Cork, they automatically assumed it was Jack Cork, whereas everyone knows we need an experienced Striker and in reality all we can afford is his dad, Alan Cork! ;)

Simon, Salisbury says...
12:19pm Thu 21 Aug 08

He can play anywhere along the back so I would think he is a full back to replace Surman when he goes or at right back where we are weak. I would think he is not a direct replacement for Davies as if Killer is unfit then Thomas will play.
Where has this Harte story come from?

Pleased with this signing, sounds like a very good prospect. The Daily Star says that Harte is training with us. Also there are people with inside info on this story. Regarding the possible striker signing how about Hasselbaink or Kluivert?? on a free although wages could be an issue.

Andy, Chapel Stand says...

The reason Cork has been brought in is because he can play anywhere across the back. I guess the reason he is only on loan until January will be to see if he is any good and from the players point of view, if he is getting games. Skacel would be the left back if he is not sold which means Surman and Holmes down the left. Harte would be a good signing too as long as the wages fit. That would mean 4 players on the left side which is what we need. A right back ( as cover) and a decent striker that will net 20+ goals is a necessity if we are going to do anything this season and PLEASE get a new experienced keeper and get rid of Davis. It's no coincidence that whenever he plays we leak goals badly. He cannot organise the back four despite being a good shot stopper. Fans need to be patient as this re-building process will not happen over night. It may take a season or two for us to get a strong promotion winning team but until then we should enjoy the games and get behind the team. Finally a prayer to the big man upstairs.... PLEASE let a rich tycoon come in and buy our club from the Devil.....

Good signing. Shame though it isn't for the intire season, but hopefully if he does well it can be extended. Hope fully we can bring in Ian Harte & a sriker with experience soon (who's Hasselbaink playing for now?) Looks like Davis is gonna be the next to go, hope this means we won't flog Surman or John. If John goes we will be f**cked! COYR!

As a Bournemouth supporter I remember Cork when he spent a loan spell with us. Excellent player, more offensive than defensive I would say. So I hope you use him in that guise. Should do well for you and was always a class or two above when he was playing with us.

These are Saints defensive options as it stands:

Right Back: Lloyd James (a midfielder) Jamie Hatch (often injured youth team player)

Centre Back: Michael Svensson (great player, but we all still hold our breath whenever he goes to ground). Chris Perry. Wayne Thomas (who looks to be offloaded). Ollie Lancashire (often injured). Jack Cork.

Left Back: Andrew Surman (a midfielder) Rudi Skacel (going to be sold, or shot, whatevers cheapest).

Errrr, we need full backs!!! How hard can it be to find a dedicated left back or right back ??

The trouble with "versatile players" is they are just not that good in one position, hence why they play all over the shop to fill in temporary.

Whereabouts on the site as i can find no reference to it.
Also, why on earth would he want to leave a club in LA where he is loved and still starting for, to come to a sinking ship like Saints. Dont get me wrong, i love the club, but can we please make some realistic comments here.

For the record Major, one of my colleagues is a Chelsea fan and when I mentioned Jack Cork to him, he immediately said "You did well, we had a few clubs interested in him"! So try not to be so sceptical, despite the reasons you may have been given to be so, in the past.

What is worrying me is that Rupert Lowe keeps making the same mistakes as he did before he resigned.

I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the guy, but things would be so much better if he stuck to what he says is his plan.

If we are going with youth then don’t sell young talented players for a lot less than their market value.

If are to survive, being forever a “selling club” ( at tactic that has shown hansom dividends for Darlington) then why loan players, pay their wages and develop them just so Chelsea can sell them on for a small profit.

This guy Cork may well be able to cope in this division, but will he ever play for Chelsea? No they will sell him to a Championship side for about 1m, just like Arsenal do every year.

A final thought, another two midfielders, why?

It’s a trademark of the teams that Lowe likes to build. You can buy them cheap and put them on Lowe wages.

He would rather have 4 players on 3k a week than have two on 6k.

We now have 11 midfielders

The problem is that if one of the 3k a week players gets any good you either have to sell him or give him more money either way you are back at square one team wise. If none of the 4 3k players gets good then there is no competition no-one improves and you go down. Just look at the amount of midfielders we had the season we where relagated

I must admit I thought the same thing, but then I thought about players such as Martin Crainey, who I thought was a darned good CB, yet he was seldom played there, always as LB or RB, where he was inevitably cr@p. We could do with him now!!

The problem is, will he be played where he is best or will he just be used to fill any gap that appears, where he will be ineffective? Square peg in round hole syndrome?

Where some "versatile" players are concerned it seems that whenever they have a bad game they always say it's because they've been played out of position. Then one day you realise that they've used that excuse for every position they've played in! :-)

Heartening to see good comments from AFCB supporters, but need to take into consideration that they were playing at a lower level.

"Errrr, we need full backs!!! How hard can it be to find a dedicated left back or right back ??"

Agree again. Hope there is some truth in the Ian Harte rumour. I know he's been around for many years, but have a feeling he's still young enough to play for a few years and would take so much presure off of the centre backs.

One final point. Have any of the coaching team seen Cork play or are they acting on a recommendation?

Can't deny the guy is a decent shot stopper at times and, like Paul Jones, in the TV highlights he's generally going to look OK.

But I think what people don't like about Davis is that some of those saves wouldn't be necessary if he commanded his box better, organised his defence and imposed himself and didn't cause unnecessary panic.

Yep, fitness has been an issue with us conceding late goals, but so has lack of understanding at the back and lack of confidence in the keeper's decision making.

In my opinion, having a vocal, dependable keeper would save us bags of goals.

Even with Andrew Davis or Daly at CB our defensive record was still poor all season last year regardless of personnel, until we changed the keeper in the last few weeks.

Maybe coincidence, but didn't our form dramatically improve the season before when Bart replaced Davis in goal and we made a late surge for the playoffs?

Bart's not the answer now (confidence is shot), but all the evidence points to our defense improving with Davis out of the side.

Wouldn't hate the guy or boo him as some have been guilty of doing in the past, but I'm far from convinced he should be our No1.

I partially agree,

I dont think he should be our number one - but I still prefer him to bart (cant comment on forecast)

personally I think we were mad to get rid of paul smith! again a decent young(ish) keeper who's confidence was rocked.

we were also mad to get rid of David Coles! since h left the GK standard has definately slipped!

I partially agree, I dont think he should be our number one - but I still prefer him to bart (cant comment on forecast) personally I think we were mad to get rid of paul smith! again a decent young(ish) keeper who's confidence was rocked. we were also mad to get rid of David Coles! since h left the GK standard has definately slipped! A decent shot stopper is not always a decent keeper - organisation is half the battle!

David Coles is the reason why James is now Englands No1,and the reason why pompey did well last season.

Does anyone know why he left,l suspect that clueless tosser Lowe had something to do with it.

Sadly David Coles was surplus to requirements when Burley came in and brought Malcolm Webster with him. Look at how David James improved and Jamie Ashdown to that matter compared to what happened to Paul Smith. I don\\\'t think Bart has improved at all and wouldn\\\'t be surprised if he moved on.
whenever I see saints warm up and see malcolm webster - I cant see how he inspires the keepers? he doesn't look bothered!

colesy was so enthusiastic! I gues just another of the dodgey old pals act from GB!

Why does everyone keep talking about the fact we should get Richard Wright. He signed for Ipswich during the summer! I for one thought Kelvin Davis kept us in the game at Cardiff. they could have had a hat full if it wasnt for him. And the same against Celtic (i know it was only a pre season game), but the guy had a stormer!!!
Even with Andrew Davis or Daly at CB our defensive record was still poor all season last year regardless of personnel,
