Glitter flees secret village hideaway

SHAMED paedophile Gary Glitter is believed to have fled the Hampshire village he has been using as a secret hideaway, the Daily Echo can reveal.

The former glam rock star is today back in hiding after he was spotted in the leafy Hampshire village of Warsash.

The 64-year-old was seen admiring used cars outside a luxury motor dealership.

Local community leaders last night warned residents could take vigilante action if he ever returned.

Glitter - real name Paul Gadd - had been staying with a friend in Hill Head near Fareham since his return to Britain on Friday.

The 64-year-old was spotted in an orange wig and straw hat as he took a stroll outside the secluded £2m detached home.

He was later seen in the car park of a local Sainsbury's supermarket and admiring a £25,950 Mercedes ML350 at Peter Nash Specialist Cars, on Warsash Road.

Dealership manager Mark Nash said: "We have not seen him or dealt with him, but he is obviously around the area.

He added: "I don't know if I'd want to sell him a car, business is business, but you don't want to be seen to be dealing with unpopular people."

Fareham Borough Council leader councillor Sean Woodward said the former pop superstar was not welcome in the local community.

"I have absolutely no desire to share the borough of Fareham with Glitter, or Paul Gadd, or whatever he calls himself and if he is here I hope he goes very quickly and never comes back," he said.

"I'm sure any parent who lives here would share my view that they don't want him in Fareham."

He added: "I would think that (vigilante violence) was highly likely if he was spotted somewhere and that is not something I would wish to deploy resources to contend with."

A source told the Echo that Glitter had never returned to his hideaway, believed to be in nearby Stubbington or Hill Head, after his late night shopping trip.

Glitter was earlier jailed in Britain in 1999 for possessing 4,000 pornographic pictures of children.

Glitter has historic links with Hampshire. He has relatives in Portsmouth and he kept his yacht Voyageur berthed at Haslar Marina, in Gosport, in the late 1990s.

Police swooped on his 40ft vessel in November 1997 after 4,000 pornographic pictures of children were found on a computer he had taken to a repair shop.

At the height of his fame he lived in Rogate, Petersfield.

Glitter was this month freed early from jail in Vietnam after serving three years for offences against two girls.

Upon his return to Britain, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman would not confirm or deny if Glitter had done so.

"It is our policy not to discuss any details of named individuals who are registered sex offenders. Therefore I cannot confirm one that he is here or two where he might be," the spokesman said.

"Protection of the public is priority for the police and Hampshire Constabulary has invested significant resources into the management of offenders and we have a duty to prevent public order situations and protect individuals who may be at risk."

I thought used car dealers were unpopular people. Are sales so poor that people must resort to this sort of news story.

A happy meal, and he is dressed in a ginger wig? Maybe he has got a job as Ronald McGlitter? Anyway the press are hanging around Hill Head still, that's where he's loitering, near a certain sea front pub.

Can I just say to Sean Woodward that I would rather Gadd lived in Fareham or Southampton with the knowledge of the police than that he was forced to go into hiding by irresponsible comments like Mr Woodward's.

Unless we are contemplating either locking up sex offenders for life, or execution, they have to live somewhere after they have served their sentences. It is better that this is done with police knowledge and without the threat of local vigilantes forcing them to live in secret with their whereabouts unknown to the police. And yes Mr Woodward, I am a parent.

Exactly. £10 says Woodward couldn't give two hoots about where Gadd lives. It's a purely political move, aiming for - and, sadly, probably getting - the "anti-nonce" vote. It's only a step or two away from "A vote against me is a vote for child molesters. You don't want child molesters, do you?"

George - Yes, this is indeed very true! And I don't know if I'm comfortable with the idea that there are 'chef's' in McDonalds to be honest.... not really chef's at all actually, just... zombies.. It was probably the only place he could get served. I mean, the guy's banned from 18 countries. Imagine being BANNED from 18 countries. Actually, no don't. Its not a nice thought. To be honest, anyone who changes their name to 'Gary Glitter' has to have a few issues..

Possibly, but to be fair, this is a bit of a hot topic, and the headline tells most of the story. It's not surprising people leap straight to the comments, it's what most of us are reading this particular story for, after all

normally I scan the story unless it is of particular interest. Sorry to have offended you by not doing things how you like them to be done.

The Echo stories normally don't have anything of interest after the first few paragraphs anyway. This one has been an exception.

I find that even looking at a picture of 'Gadd' repulses me but I totally agree with 'Tony'. It is better to know where the disgusting little twerp is than to discover he is near when he has committed another of his disgusting crimes. Your comments Tony are appropriate and "sane" in this page of 'knee jerk' and reactionary comments.

No but the emotional damage he has wrought should be cause to seize his assets. Reguardless of what impact his actions had on the aquasition of his wealth i personally would like to see the courts take a stand with this and order his assets be surrendered to a childrens charity. I have been reading the comments posted over the last two days and have until now kept out of it because i know what i am about to post will invoke a reaction mostly negative towards me and others who may stand up and say what they think. Paul Gadd/Gary Glitter has been convicted of a crime commited in another country he has served time for this and rightly or wrongly has been released. Now part of that sentance included deportation to his native country - the UK - so he is here not because he chooses to be - remember how he tried to enter Thiland and Hong Kong- but because this is the only place he can be at present and like it or not if as i suspect he is schedule 3 on the offenders list he will not be allowed to travel anywhere else. Do you realy think with all the Hate thrown at him just from this site he is here through choice?. As for his chances of reoffending that remains to be seen. Most child abusers are known to there victims as close family members or family friends not "famous" ex pop stars. This histeria has been fuelled by misinformation, predudice, and a media that only exists to line the pockets of its owners. Are we not all intellegent human beings who can think for ourselves and not follow the herd.In my opinion the guy has served his sentance, been deported and should be left alone to get on with his life, lets face it next week this will have been forgotten about anyway, theres enough in the world to realy get concerned about without hounding others. And before the comments start i am a parent and it wouldn't bother me if he lived next door. After all do you know your neigbours that well that you can honestly say they are "normal"?
