WITH his big grin, striking blond hair and bright blue eyes, Kailin Tucker won over the hearts of everyone he met.

The happy-go-lucky toddler was the apple of his mum's eye, his cheeky mischief always making people laugh.

But tragedy struck the Tucker family when little Kailin was found face down in his grandmother's garden pond.

To add to the family's grief Kailin regained a heartbeat hours after being pronounced dead, but then died three days later.

Mum Sasha has paid tribute to the 16-month-old following the accident that happened as she was making plans for his christening.

Sasha, 20, said: "Kailin was a really happy boy. He loved life. He was a brilliant baby - he was really good and never cried. You only had to meet him once and you were in love with him."

Kailin was found in the 15ft wide pond at his grandmother Michelle Tucker's house in Winchester Road, Southampton. He had been playing with his cousin Callum, who is one month older.

Speaking of the moment she found her son in the pond, Sasha said: "They had had baths and were in their pyjamas playing in the garden.

"They never went near the pond because they were scared of the water.

"I came to the house for about a minute because we were planning Kailin's christening. Then Callum came in and was whinging, so I worried. I went outside and couldn't find him straight away, then I saw him. He was just face down in the water."

"I pulled him out and handed him to my brother Shawn, but he couldn't get any water out. The only thing I thought to do was run out into the street with him and shout for help. A man got his wife, who was a doctor, and she brought up quite a lot of water."

Kailin was then taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where efforts were made to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead. He was being given a bath when, suddenly, his pulse returned.

For the next three days he remained unconscious and on a ventilator in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Sadly, his condition deteriorated and he was pronounced brain dead on August 2.

Sasha, a shop assistant at One Stop in Bassett, said: "I didn't cope well. Your kids are your life. I didn't know what to feel, I just wanted to hold him, he was my baby. It didn't feel real."

She has had her son's full name - Kailin Rory Tucker - and a picture of his favourite children's character, Iggle Piggle from In The Night Garden, tattooed on her arm in his memory.

Sasha, who is separated from Kailin's father, is staying at her mum's house as she is too distressed to go home to her flat in Shirley Towers. "I'm finding it hard to go home at the moment as Kailin's stuff is everywhere. It was just me and him living there."

Since the accident, Michelle, 42, has had the pond filled in. She said: "I didn't fill in the pond before because we are trying to move house. After everything that's happened, it just had to be filled in. All we kept seeing was Kailin out there - it was horrible. I have got to live with that for the rest of my life."

Sasha added: "You can't watch kids 24 hours a day, it's just impossible. They played out there all the time and never went near the pond."

Friends and family released 50 balloons at Kailin's funeral in Hollybrook Cemetery.

An inquest into the tragedy on July 30 has been opened and adjourned.

This is extremely sad - but completely avoidable.
It is a stark warning to Parents and Grandparents from whatever background or social status, you must remain vigilant at all times where toddlers and infants are concerned - ponds or not.

with regards to the post from parent in romsey, why do u have to be so inconsiderate. have some thought for the mother (who is a friend of mine) and the guilt and loss she is going have to deal with for the rest of her life. there is no need to be labelling the accident as avoidable - that is just disrespectful.

'Parent from Romsey' has made a fair point. It's not a dig at the family, just a reminder that we all need to have eyes everywhere when it comes to toddlers.

No, the point is that you dont need to state the obvious, I am sure that family members will live with the guilt of this for their whole lives without people twisting the knife in.

The point is that some people don't see this as obvious.

Indeed.

"I came to the house for about a minute because we were planning Kailin's christening"

It only take seconds to drown. Never, ever leave an infant alone in the bath or near a pond.

And yes I have three children, etc, etc.

Whilst I have a huge amount of sympathy for the parents and grandparents or wish to add to their pain, this was completely avoidable like the poster says. It is not being disrectful if someone else can learn from this tragedy, and hopefully another tragedy prevented.

My parents had a huge pond in their garden when my now adult children were toddlers...they put a rigid cover over it before my boys could walk, and they were never, ever left unattended in that garden, not once, even for a millisecond.

Parents/grandparents with ponds, take note, fill them in if you have kids of any age, they can drown in less than 3 inches of water.

Tragic but preventable.

Such a tragedy, one of the worst things a parent can go through.

Please ignore the trolls who are looking for a response. Don't give them it

Whilst this is tragic and my sympathies to the family why don't pond owners get off to B&Q, spend £30 or so (the cost of just a few ornamental fish) on some fencing and posts and make it toddler proof. This happens all too frequently and it's negligent of both pond owner and parent to let it happen.

I am a good friend to the mothers brother. Im angry and disgusted with certain peoples comments on here about sasha’s son.

Why does it have to matter where she lived? Shirley Towers or a 6 bedroom house in Chilworth! She is a young mother who is mourning her loss with the love and care of her family and friends.

Kailin was such a happy lively little boy who made an impact on everyone he met.
Unfortunately this was a tragic accident it could have happened to anyone!
Any parent would agree they should never out live their children it doesn’t matter if 16 months old of 45+

DENZIL & BAH Your welcome to your comments and own opinion but were you never told about RESPECT and consideration. If have nothing nice to say keep your mouth SHUT!!

RIP Kalin Tucker
We are all thinking of you and miss you
Sweet dreams lil one x

Sasha added: "You can't watch kids 24 hours a day, it's just impossible. They played out there all the time and never went near the pond." that is the role of a mother to care and look out for your children not leave them unattended especially when water is about. she will regret this all her life but hopefully she and others will learn that children are attracted to water and need constant monitoring and ponds can be made child proof with a little thought this was totally avoidable

Reading this and a load of the other comments here, I might as well be living in Liverpool not Southampton. Nothing insensitive has been said - nobody has said "I have no sympathy", just pointing out the lesson to be learned along side the trajedy.

Mawkish sentimentality, feeding off the misery of others, is as corrosive and unpleasant as Denzil and the other trolls' comments ever are.

I think it's about time the Echo started moderating these boards....and filtering awful comments that only serve to compound people's distress. I hope you're proud of yourselves :(
