HIGHWAYS chiefs have vowed to carry out a safety review on a busy New Forest road after a schoolgirl and her stepdad died in a horror crash.

Channon Kevern, 11, and 29-year-old Terry Stubbs died after the motorbike they were travelling on collided with a car on the A326 near Hardley roundabout.

Now county roads bosses have pledged to undertake a thorough investigation of the route where the tragedy happened.

News of the crash sent shockwaves through the Fawley community where Channon and Terry lived. In tribute to the pair, the family have released a picture of them together.

In the days after the incident, scores of grief-stricken friends and relatives left cards and flowers at the spot where they lost their lives.

Brian Dash, councillor for Hythe and Dibden, said: "I think we have got to look very closely at this road.

"Something like double white lines may help. But you cannot make any sensible suggestions until we have seen a report of the accident."

Fawley councillor Alexis McEvoy said: "A lot of people are calling for a dual carriageway but my feelings are that it would encourage more people to go faster.

"The road needs to be looked at - engineers need to assess the problem and report back so that the public know what they are thinking."

A spokesman from Hampshire County Council said: "As with any fatal accident or accident resulting in serious injury, we do investigate, but we cannot carry out our investigations until the police have concluded theirs.

"Our road safety officers will be looking into it and assessing what safety measures would be appropriate."

A 73-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until October 24.

Absolute Claptrap. Double white lines acheive squat. Yes you can make a sensible suggeston now. A Dual Carriageway!

As for Councillor McEvoy's suggestion that a dual carriageway would only make people go faster! That's correct: faster than the current 20mph this joke of a road allows currently. These local politicians are just full of hot air. Get off the fence and spend OUR money to fix the issue

These Councillors really ought to get out more & experience life in the real world.
"double white lines may help" God save us!
".....a dual carriageway.....woul
d encourage more people to go faster" Has she ever driven on this road? At least on a dual carriageway the traffice would be seperated and 'u-turns' a bit tricker to achieve.
I suppose we only have ourselves to blame as we have voted these numptys in.

So exactly what would a dual carriage way achieve...yep faster traffic and more incidents..this is a busy road and that fact means the traffic should be traveling at a reasonable speed. A dual carriage way would mean the racing and barging for places that we see on the Totton west By-passevery day. What this road needs is a 50mph limit and all the pull-ins need to be shut off or resurfaced with tarmac. So double white (no overtaking) lines wouldn't work eh...is that the fault of the road or the people that drive on it???

I agree with the last comment. There should be a reduced speed limit along this road of 50mph and a few speed cameras. A dual carriage way will only make people drive faster.

I fail to see how double white lines and a 50mph speed limit will prevent drivers doing u-turns (the alleged cause of this accident). The Totton bypass is a dual carriageway and has a 50mph limit as does the Millbrook Road into Southampton and a lot of others too, it would seem sensible to apply the same to whole length of this road.

It's not the road that needs to be altered, it's the few idiot drivers that are using all roads that need changing. We have all seen them, speeding, tail gating, u-turning etc.. Until we address this problem every road has the potential to become an acciddent blackspot no matter what the speed limit or road width is. Education in schools, teaching the drivers of tomorrow how dangerous and fatal speed can be.

A big plus one to what you've said. Roads are only as dangerous as the drivers that use it.

The lay-bys along this stretch of road seem to be the cause of most of the fatalities that occur why not close them all there are plenty of car parks on the forest for these who wish to use them why put parking next to a busy road that services thousands of cars a day.
