Temporary rink wins planning permission

THE final hurdle has been cleared for the return of a temporary Christmas ice rink to Southampton.

Council planners yesterday gave the go ahead to transform the forecourt of the Civic Centre into a winter wonderland.

Cousins Entertainment (CE), set up by 1980 Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins, won permission to build the temporary ice rink, announced earlier this year.

CE operations director Alan Abretti, a former British champion, said 50,000 people were expected to take to the ice.

The 20m by 30m rink, which will be run commercially by CE, will have enough room for 200 skaters at any one time.

It will be open from November 21 until January 11, excluding Christmas Day.

Advance tickets, up to £8.50 for adults, £6.50 for children, students, and concessions, and £28 for families for an hour session, go on sale from Monday.

The Civic Centre car park will close and alternative parking options will be made for visitors.

A previous temporary Christmas rink in 2006 at the Guildhall, pictured above, attracted more than 16,000 skaters but made a £60,000 loss for the council because of poor planning and sponsorship.

Oh, that's guaranteed bro! And if the Council get any inkling that CE will lose money, they'll scrap any further attempt to generate commercial interest in building a permanent rink due to perceived lack of interest. Our spineless Tory Council in action.

Don't fear though. The Brick and I are going to rack up 50000 hours of skating time to make sure that never happens.

if the figures are right for the last one 16,000 skaters that would more than enough to do it.only problem is if its built in the center of southampton alot of people will avoid it.people like my self,i dont even do my shopping in the center southampton let alone my entertainment and only go into the center only when there is no choice else where

Of course they will! And the figures will still be virtually meaningless, because they have no bearing on how many of those people would use an ice rink at any other time of the year. I suggest you, or BRICK, or someone, gets down there and runs an exit poll on how many people would like to make use of a permanent rink, rather than just sit back and quote the figure as God-given evidence that everyone that skated at Christmas is a complete ice nut who wouldn't be able to stay away

Woo-hoo! Daily Echo Forum Readers meet-up on the ice rink!

Look! There's Denzil scratching his bum! And Kebab Man giving out frozen extra mayo ice cream on stick, eh? Southy and Paramjit are wearing flowing red cloaks as symbols of the forthcoming Socialist revolution, and The Brick is laughing at George saying "I told you so!!" and "Give us what we want and we'll go away!! Southy, don't take this an an insult but you are a very strange yet interesting man.

You bang on about every topic as though it is part of your soul, obviously researching things extensively and getting a lot of needless info and facts. But when action is required, such as the ice rink, you seem to be terrified of going anywhere other than your house or library.

An Armchair Socialist. An Armchair Pontificator. We should set up a campaign to get him one of those snazzy recliners with a massage built-in and electric switch to move the footrest up and down, so he can concentrate, without distraction or unecessary effort, on the critical stuff, like BORING everybody fart-less.

Ah! Basingstoke!

The Entertainment Capital of the South.

A Fun-Filled Friday night in Bowdy, Rowdy Basingstoke.

Yes, Basingstoke! . . . best experienced on an icy winters day with a trusty, rusty pair of ice skates and a warm cup of cocoa and curled-up, tired-looking ham and cheese sandwich afterwards. Mmmm . . . wunerful times in Basingstoke.

Beautiful Basingstoke . Bashful, Bountiful, Bollockingly Luverly Basingstoke, twinned with Bangcock and Bratislava and Bangalore. Who could ask for more?

Yeah.

He's a sort of bumbling, buffoon-like human version of Old Moore’s Almanack, except his facts often are wrong or made up on the spot to fit the ebb and flow of his argument.

If you regularly view his postings there is a discernible pattern: the grammar and spelling of an illiterate Welsh sheep farmer with large tufts of hairs growing out his ears who skipped formal education, is replaced by highly articulate, pithy and attractive prose.

Maybe he inadvertently slips between the two extremes?

Maybe he is a University Professor trying hard to disguise this?

Maybe he has several poster IDs and gets their "personas" mixed at times?

This possibility is strengthened by his apparent paranoia that the poster “northy” frequently adopts parallel poster IDs, just to annoy and belittle him?

Have you noticed that too?

I have no clue if there is one or several “northy’s” and see no evidence either way. But he certainly has a bee in his bonnet about “northy” or the “northys”

My gripe with him is his smug self satisfaction and self proclaimed ( and unjustified ) online role of: Lord Of All Knowledge Of All Things About Southampton That Ever Happened In History And Will Ever Happen In The Future.

This superiority is offensive and condescending to all other contributors.

He also has a need , much of the time, to be right, and always has to have the last word. What is all that about? Freud would have the answers.

I don't think its all that offensive. I find it amusing sometimes when he tries his twists and turns to avoid appearing wrong, but it's hard to be offended by something that blatantly exposes faulty reasoning. But mostly, it's hard to find Southy offensive because he's one of the few contributors who pretty much always avoids the rampant ad hominem that pervades these boards. I've had a few enormous disagreements with him that, had he been another poster, would have resulted in a massive amount of name-calling, me being followed around the boards and repeatedly jumped upon with "I'm George I think I know everything" quotes. Happens with a really boring regularity, because a lot of people simply cannot disagree with someone else without taking it personally.

Southy's a curiosity alright, but an on-topic one, and a calm one

Dear Southy I am well aware that there is more to judging than the bit we see on TV, but the question was how did they manage this at Richmond ice rink? As the ice rink was closed in 1987 Can you also clarify why you are still referring to the ice rink at Tower Park Poole which is also closed? If you are going to give reference to other facilities it is rather important to make sure you are correct or people will think you are silly!

Come off is, Southy, it doesn't work like that and you know it. He's looked it up, as have I. The ice rink at Tower Park closed down years ago and you know it. Claiming it's there and refusing to accept that anyone else might ever be right about anything is a bit pointless, and saying "go find it", well, now you're just pretending you're flat-out denying. Or have you moved on from custom-fitted definitions of the word "conjecture" to re-defining the word "exists"?

Come on, Southy, there's no ice rink at Tower Park and you know it. Just admit it!

Ah, the old "the Internet is wrong" get-out.

Well, I just phoned Tower Park and asked about their ice rink, and was told that they had one years ago but it's no longer there. Nor is there one in the vicinity. So presumably this is all just some massive conspiracy to keep details of this ice rink secret from everyone, is it?

The defence rests.

PS. The quote "rubbish in, rubbish out" is actually "garbage in, garbage out" and it isn't an IBM slogan, it was a term used by someone who at one point was an IBM engineer, but he really got it from Charles Babbage. If you're gonna hide the truth behind a soundbite, make sure you've got the right soundbite

Sorry Southy, I'm not going on some fools errand because you're in denial. Unless there's some gateway to an alternative reality at that end of Poole, I'm doubtful it'll yield any new results. There is no ice rink there, it's been confirmed by a real, actual human being who is there, and in a position to know. Not some website you can dismiss as being "wrong" because it's on the Internet. An actual employee of the leisure facility in question. You're making stuff up, pure and simple, and even when caught out on this, you still persist. If there was a way to shake ones head in baffled pity over the
