Unclaimed bikes up for grabs at Portswood police station
11:00am Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in News
UNCLAIMED bikes recovered by Hampshire police are being given away to young people.
Bikes thought to have been stolen but never claimed by their rightful owners are being offered to youngsters aged between 13 to 18 as part of an event being staged by officers in Portswood, Southampton.
Police community support officers Jo Averis and Chloe Dawson are giving away the bikes that can then be reconditioned and made roadworthy by the young people at the “Pimp My Bike” event later this month.
The officers have teamed up with local bike companies and organisations including Portswood Cycles, Halfords and Sustrans, who will be on hand throughout the day to work with the new owners and improve their bikes.
Around 20 bikes will be up for grabs that have been kept by police but never claimed.
Safety advice and tips on protecting bikes will also be on hand throughout the day.
The Pimp My Bike day is taking place from 10am to 3pm on October 29 at Portswood police station.
