A SECOND-HAND car dealer jailed for
“clocking” cars to reduce readings by more
than 404,000 miles has been ordered to pay
up nearly £60,000.
Conman Nicholas Jukes was put behind
bars for 12 months after a jury found him
guilty of a series of frauds relating to clocking
odometers, the device which measures
vehicle mileage.
Now he has been ordered by a judge to
hand over £58,786.97 over the next six
months under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Some of the money, the total of his available
assets, will be used to compensate the
customers he duped at his firm Fareham
Fleet and Finance Ltd in Fleet End Road,
Warsash.
Jukes, 44, of Bentham Way, Swanwick,
denied 13 charges brought against him by
Trading Standards.
It was alleged that odometer readings on
some of the cars he sold between June 2008
and June 2009 had been wound back.
Jurors found him guilty of six counts of
fraud and one count of engaging in a commercial
practice which was misleading
under the Consumer Protection From
Unfair Trading Regulations.
No verdict was given on six alternative
charges of engaging in an unfair or misleading
commercial practice.
