Ambulance fire closes main road
A mum and baby were involved in a dramatic rescue when their ambulance taking them on a 999 call burst into flames on one of Hampshire's busiest road.
The drama happened as they were being rushed to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.
The ambulance was on the southbound carriageway of the A34 when is caught fire at about 6.45am.
The vehicle managed to pull into the hard shoulder of the southbound A34 near the A272 at about 6.45am after the crew detected smoke.
A spokesman for South Central Ambulance said the crew called for another ambulance which rushed to the scene to take the mum and her child to hospital.
There were no injuries in the incident and it has not been revealed why the baby, who was being transferred from Andover, was being taken to hospital.
Meanwhile massive tailbacks have built up after the inside lane was closed until 7.40am.
