MP demands Government answers over Ford closure
Southampton MP John Denham has called on a the Government to set up a taskforce to help staff in the city axed by Ford.
He said city workers had been “let down” by the company and demanded answered from Government ministers on what efforts were made to keep Transit manufacturing in Southampton.
Mr Denham, the MP for Southampton Itchen, said: “For years the Southampton built transit has been the workhorse of British business. White van man drives a transit. Now white van man will only be able to buy a transit from Turkey.
“The local workforce have been let down by Ford. While other companies like BMW, Nissan, Toyota and JLR have been building up vehicle assembly in Britain, Fords have taken a series of strategic decisions to move their assembly out of Britain and even out of Europe.”
Mr Denham said he would be asking Ministers how many meetings they had had with Fords to discuss this decision and what efforts they had made to persuade the company to change their minds.
He also called on the Government and the City and County Councils to set a Taskforce to help those who would lose their jobs at Fords and the many other businesses who will be affected.

Politically dodgy John Denham paying lip service to the plight of Ford workers may be music to mine and many other ears, but why is he quite about Southampton Council workers whose jobs are also under threat from his NuLabourite colleagues led by his mate The Dear Leader Cllr. Williams?

Let's face it, if Cameron&Co can still be blaming anything and everything on the previous government after more than two years, surely Williams cannot be expected to clear up the mess left by Smith in just a couple of months.

Funny how none of the local government or our elected MPs even batted an eyelid when British Gas made 500+ staff redundant not 2 months ago; yet as Fords closure goes public they're all up in arms and calling for taskforces and enquiries!
